Speak Up - Where We Share What We Think

Okay,
I've ready stories on here, which contain the main Girl being Bullied, Tortured, Kidnapped, Sexually Abused and much more.
I may be the ugly duckling on this subject, but I just don't understand how I'm supposed to feel reading a story that contains this. Don't misunderstand my point, some of the Authors that have wrote stories containing either of the above are astonishingly good! I literally am hooked on how their words just flow beautifully together into a magnificent sentence.
I go from loving the main Guy (usually Harry) to suddenly hating him for being such an awful person and hurting the one Girl he turns out to love?
I am pleased when the Girl doesn't like the the Guy (again it's often Harry, which is fine!) as naturally you would hate the bastard that's doing shit to you. But there are some characters who are bit more forgiving than me and seem to fall for this Guy's sudden change in charm.

I may be missing the point of these stories. So, what is it about these stories that keep you captivated and hooked? How do you feel about the characters ? Is it the feeling of the Girl character being vulnerable to the Main Guy?
