The next day in school, our English class walked to the library to do research for an upcoming report we would have to present for the class. Jeffery was in that class, so we got to hang out together a little bit.

Unfortunately, a lot of his teammates were also in the class.

“Remember class,” Our teacher said to all of us once we were in the library, “You have to pick a topic that you feel people generally wouldn’t know a lot about. Once you have a topic, come tell me. Two people can’t do the same topic; first come first serve.”

Jeffery and I sat down at one of the tables, ready to do some googling to find a topic rather than comb through the aisles and aisles of books.

“Are you nervous about tonight?” I asked Jeffery. Tonight was the night he was coming over for dinner to meet my father.

“Not really.” Jeffery said. “Besides, I think you’re nervous enough for the both of us.”

“I know I am!” I responded.

“But, my mom’s birthday is coming up, think you could get your dad to sign an old 5SOS vinyl record? I think it would be a good birthday gift for her.”

“I’ll see what I can do.” I said, half sarcastically because I knew it wouldn’t be a problem.

“Hey Jeffery!” One of his teammates said to him. This teammate wasn’t Ethan, but it was someone who was frequently around Ethan.

This teammate proceeded to slide a manila folder onto the table we were sitting at. Jeffery opened it to see a piece of paper, with what looked like a picture of a butt on it.

“Does that Xerox of my ass turn you on?” The teammate asked snidely.

I didn’t know whether to laugh or be triggered. “Did you seriously take a photocopy of your butt?” I asked. “What a loser!”

The teammate completely ignored me and continued to converse with Jeffery. “Just my way of saying I don’t have a problem with you being gay.”

“He’s not gay!” I protested.

The teammate just snorted and walked away, and he started laughing with Ethan once he approached Ethan.

Frustrated, I came to a realization, got up and walked to the teacher.

“I know what I’d like to do my report on.” I said to the teacher.

“Great! What is it?” She responded.

I glanced over at Ethan and the teammate, who were still busting a gut. “Transgender issues and rights.” I responded.
