Pretty Girls Hide Pain So Deep Inside

Chapter 9

''5 Seconds of Summer's concert got cancelled after their opening act's lead singer and the band's personal friend, and more, Hope Lucas Irwin collapsed on stage while screaming in pain.''

Hope was greeted by eight pairs of eyes staring right at her. She was lying in a hospital bed, Calum and Ashton by her sides and the remaing six boys scattered across the room.

- Hey, baby, how are you feeling? - Calum asked Hope, his voice soft and sweet.

He was gripping her hand tightly.

Morning light was coming in trough the room's window, bothering Hope's eyes. Adjusting her positon, Hope turned her back to the widnow, her eyes now falling to Calum's worried ones. Hope wasn't speaking, at least not until she noticed the tear stains on Calum's puffy cheeks. They weren't fresh, but they weren't completely dried either. Her best guess was that they were an hour, or two, old.

- What happened? - Her low husky voice asked.

- Do you remember anything? - He asked her softly.

His grip on her hand was getting even stronger... But it wasn't violent, no, it was rather protective. It was warm and shielding.

Hope nodded after looking at everyone in the room. The looks on their faces were making her nervious, and as much as she hates to admit it, they were making her worried. She pinned her bottom lip with her teeth, trying to keep the tears from filling her eyes. Her lip seemed like it was going to start bleeding any second, but suddenly she released it.

- What happened to me? - Hope asked, her gaze was back on Calum.

Before he had a chance to respond, an older looking man in a white coat entered the room. Dr. Benson, Hope read from his name tag.

- Miss Irwin, I'm glad you're awake. - The doctor said.

Everyone looked at him.

- What happened to her? - Ashton asked.

- Is she gonna be alright? - Tears were threatening to escape Calum's eyes once again.

Everyone was showering the doctor with question, everyone but Hope, she remained quiet. She didn't want to know the answers to any of those questions, she was afraid. Fear had glued her mouth shut. The wierd thing is, she wasn't afraid of finding out something's wrong with her or that she's sick, she was never afraid of that, in fact she always thought that was going to be her faith and that it would happen eventually, just like it did to her mother and she was ready for that... She wasn't afraid of fighting for survival, or even death, no, she was afraid of putting everyone in that room in the same position she was in when her mom was sick. She was afraid of, or rather, for them. She didn't want them to go trough everything she went trough, but not because she thought they couldn't handle it, they could, and that was a lot scarier. The thought of them not being able to let go was what frightened her. She was a fighter, she always has been, so if it came to that, if she really was sick, she would fight with every atom in her body, but if that just wasn't her fate, if it was meant for her to join her mother a little eariler, she was afraid of what that would do to them, all of them.

- Everyone, please, calm down. - Dr. Benson politely shut everyone up.

Dr. Benson looked at Hope. Unfortunately for everyone his expresion was unreadable, but the tension and suspense that filled the room didn't point to anything good. The doctor waited a few seconds before answering. Everyone was on the edge of their seats, holding their breath, everyone except Hope. Hope was tightly holding Calum's hand, comforting him, like he was the one that was in a hospital bed and not her.

- Miss Irwin...

Insead of focusing on what the doctor had to say, Hope was more focused on the way he called her, Miss Irwin, and how wierd it sounded. Her life changed so much after her mom passed away, and as awful as it is to say it, it was for the better. If that hadn't happened, if her mom hadn't passed away, she would've never told Ashton she was his sister, and she would've never meet Calum, or her bandmates. As much as it pains her to admit it, after that horrible event, her life got better. These past months, being with Calum, bonding with Ashton, going on tour with her band and so many other things, she was the happiest version of herself... Little did she know that that was all going to get changed by one simple sentence. That's it, just one sentence will be all it takes to bring, not just hers, but all of their lives down.

- Miss Irwin, are you listening to me? - Dr. Benson snapped Hope out of her thoughts.

- Yes. - She quietly said.

- Miss Irwin, I'm pleased to tell you that you are alright... - Calum hopefully squeezed Hope's hand. - But I'm afraid you've lost the baby.

Calum's hand fell into his lap.

- What? No, I wa... - Hope looked at the doctor in shock.

- Hope, you've suffered a miscarriage, I'm sorry.

- But... I...I wasn't pregnant. - Hope didn't believe him, it had to be a mistake.

- Miss Irwin, you were five weeks pregnant. - The doctor told her.

Ashton's hand went over his mouth. Calum's eyes were filled with tears, and he wasn't the only one.

- That's... No! It's not possible. - Hope screamed.

She pressed her knees to her chest, hugging them tightly. She was shaking.

Dr. Benson excused himself from the room after being called to the front desk.

- Hope... Honey, I'm so sorry. - Ashton said with tears in his eyes and left a soft kiss on his sister's temple.

- Hope? - King held her hand.

She didn't say anything. Hope turned her head to look at Calum. He was already looking at her. His eyes were red from crying and his cheeks soaking wet. He was trying to keep himself from sobbing. The second their eyes met Calum got up and stormed out of the room, slamming the door behind him.

- Calum! - Ashton yelled.

- I'll go. - Romeo quietly said before kissing Hope on the forehead. - It's gonna be okay.

Is it? Is it really gonna be okay?

It's good that, at least, someone thought so because Hope certainly didn't.

Ashton sat down next to Hope.

- I'm so sorry, baby... - Ashton said, his voice filled with sadness. - But you're gonna be alright, I promise.

He tucked away a few stray curls behind her ear before hugging her tightly.

- I promise. - He whispered.
