Nothing Without Love

I can't believe you did that!

Louis POV

The weeks have gone by quickly, and I'm more nervous then ever for the weekend. I think things are good with Josie and I. We sent to the movies on Monday, I don't really care for Tom Cruise as an actor but it was more the company I kept then the movie we were watching. I brought her flowers on Wednesday. I didn't know what her favorite kind was so I brought daffodils because the looked nice. By the time I had brought them over, they had started to wilt, but she said she loved them anyway. The weekend passed quickly, she was busy, as was I then this past week went by way too fast, we didn't spend as much time together as we should have.

We leave tomorrow and I just keep hoping that I can pull this off. That we can pull this off. We'll be leaving mid morning as Stan and Sam are are already in the Sates, opting to say the night in New York City so their day won't be so long with an almost one year old. I still think it's crazy that Stan is married and has a child. He's always been the more mature one but he always had his moments too. I think I'll always laugh at the moments we shared when he came out on tour with us and all those times we read fan fiction for Harry so he could figure out who Jeanne was. Stan was so into that process, so organized for it all.

Those were fun memories, memories before things went south for everyone. Well, everyone except for Niall. The lucky bastard.

We've been texting constantly. It's nice to have someone to chat with what seems like all the time. I know this week she's been bored, gone to the gym a few more times then she does usually. She says sometimes she just goes there and sits in the office, helping her father with paperwork and organizing. Something to just fill her day and her attention.

Tonight, she's coming over to my place, she's never been here and for some reason I'm extremely nervous. I made sure things we're extra clean, the toilets especially as mum has always said women look at the toilets the most, judging you on how it looks. I've been pacing around the floor, I'm surprised I haven't worn the seal off the hardwood floors yet. I've given her the gate code so all she has to do is show up, she's ten minutes late. I'm not going to go crazy and call or to make sure she's coming but I had thought she would be more punctual.

When the sensor goes off, I know she's here. My stomach erupts in butterflies, I swear each time I see her the feeling gets worse for me. I hear the car door slam and I know she's getting closer to the door. I try to not make it obvious, I at least wait until she rings the doorbell before I open it, I would look like a complete psycho if I open the door before she even knocks.

“Hey!” She smiles at me, walking past me to come in. I haven't invited her in but that's pretty much the idea of inviting her over. I close the door behind her, turning on my feet as she slips off her shoes. “Wow, nice place.” She looks around and turns back to me. “Show me around?” She requests and I happily oblige, showing her the rest of the place.

Once the tour gets over I guide her to the kitchen, offering her something to drink. I would have cooked for her but I don't want to scare her away as I'm not much of a chef. I make a mean spaghetti, but I don't look that elegant eating it, I'm a bit of a slurper.

“So is Stan and Sam staying her when they come back?” She asks, leaning against the counter.

“Yes, in one of the guests rooms.” I tell her. I feel like an idiot having a conversation with her because I get distracted so easily that my responses to her questions or my conversation starters themselves lack any sort of intelligence. “What are you thinking about for dinner?” I try to change the subject.

“I've been craving Chinese for weeks. Is that okay?” She's been so nice lately, I'm waiting for her to just start throwing her sassy side around soon. I know it's coming as I've been on the nice side too. I mean, she's the one that's doing me a favor here, I have to be on my best behavior. She can back out at any time and this whole idea can go south in a second.

“Yeah, that's fine.” I smile and pull at the drawer closes to me, it's filled with take out menus as I search through them to find the ones that are for Chinese places, passing them along to her. I text our order and we retire to the living room to wait for the delivery man to show up.

Right as we begin chatting my phone starts ringing, it's my mum, on Facetime. I cringe at the thought realizing that Josie is here. And knowing my mum, if I don't answer she'll keep calling until I do. It's late there, I don't even know what she's doing up at this hour. I flash the screen to Josie, hoping she gets the memo to be quiet, I'll probably be able to pull this off if she doesn't know about Josie.

“Hey mum!” I smile as her face comes into view. “What are you doing up so late?”

“Ernie had a nightmare and now I can't sleep. I haven't talked to you in days, thought maybe you had died.” She exclaims. She looks tired, I know she is, at least the youngest twins are old enough to entertain themselves now. But to be honest, mum's got a lot of kids, lots of responsibility. “How are you then?” She asks.

“I'm doing well, waiting for some Chinese food to arrive.” I look over at Josie, she's taken the liberty to scoot all the way to the arm rest on the couch and is messing around on her phone, pretending she's not listening.

“I ran into Samantha a few days ago. You know, Stan's wife.” Her voice lingers in the air, waiting for me to respond with something.

“Ah yes, they're coming tomorrow, I'm meeting them in San Diego.” I look over at Josie again, I can see her smiling slightly, trying to avert her eyes.

“Who do you keep looking at?” It's not as if I'm trying to hide it, I'm fairly obvious as I keep looking to her for a reaction. “Is that Josie? This woman you've been dating for apparently six months and haven't said anything to me about?

And there it is, the mum embarrassing moment. You can always count on mums to call you out.

“Um, yes mum. This is Josie.” I motion for her to come closer and sit with me. I guess our secret of pretending has now spilled over to my mum and soon enough all my siblings. Mum doesn't quite know when to keep her mouth shut.

“Hi.” Josie smiles and makes an awkward wave to the screen.

“Hello Josie. I've heard about you, not from Mr. Louis as you would think but I must say you're very pretty.” I can't help smiling at my mum's comment. She can be angry with me but she'll always but on a charm for others and do her best to leave a good first impression.

“Yes, so sorry about that, I've told Louis plenty of times to tell you about us, but as you probably know, he's stubborn.” She looks at me and winks, I know she's playing this game up even more. This is getting messy and I know it's all really my fault.

“Well that's my Louis, as stubborn as always. You should have seen him as a child, stubborn and so sassy. A pain in my rear if you ask me.” She laughs. Everyone says my laugh sounds like hers, sometimes I can hear it in her voice.

“Very true!” Josie smiles, I feel like I'm not even part of this conversation anymore. All I'm doing is holding the phone for Josie and mum to chat shit about me. “But you'll be happy to know that he's been nothing more then a gentleman to me. A kind man.” Josie looks up at me and smiles, my stomach starts to pull, that nervous feeling again as she runs her fingers through my hair and gives me a light kiss on my cheek. I have to control my emotions quickly, mum obviously raised me so she knows more about me then Stan does, any slight movement that seems out of place she'll pick up on.

“Well I'm just glad to see him happy again.” I don't think I've said anything in ages, mum's not even missing me on the phone. “All right, I'll let you two get back to what you were doing, I've got to get back to bed. Louis.” I turn the phone back to me. “I'll be chatting with you later. Love you.” She smiles and ends the phone call as Josie starts laughing.

“I can't believe you did that!” My smile is so wide it's starting to hurt.

“Did what? If we didn't play it up she would have known something was up and everything would have come crashing down Lu.” She squeezes my thigh and I feel like my skin is on fire.

“She's going to kill me.” I mutter as I stand rather quickly, walking to my wallet as I know the delivery will be here soon.

“It will be fine Louis, we can just walk away from this as if nothing happened.” She shrugs and I notice her for what seems like the first time. Her hair in a top knot, an oversized black jumper and patterned leggins. It's simple but it's fitting for her, she's wearing minimal makeup and you can see she has perfect skin without it.

Louis! I yell at myself. This is all a game, it's fake. I can't let my emotions get the best of me.
