Good Intentions
Ch 8
“Jim, names Jim” I say as I shake hands with the elderly man. The elderly man and his wife were never given sons so he had no one to take over the farm. I had always wanted to have a farm out in the middle of no where, and this had presented itself at just the right time. I had been saving up money since the first day of my first job.
I saw the for sale sign up in the hardware store. How the owner came across it, I don’t know, but my dreams had presented themselves that morning.
He and his wife had driven across the country to meet me and I knew that they would not leave disappointed.
We met at the bank that held my money and were immediately approved for a loan.
After signing the papers we shook hands and went out separate ways. I would arrive with our things in two weeks.
I arrived home and told her the good news, she was just as excited. This small town held nothing for us here. The rumors continued and hung like a dark cloud over her whenever she would get wind of one.
The second week came and everything had been loaded up. She kissed her parents goodbye amid lots of tears but assured them she would be back to visit soon.
After a day and a half or traveling we stopped in a small town to grab a bite to eat. We sat facing the park watching the children play. I could see the look in her eyes, the longing for a child. I began to watch. I listened to what she pictured our child looking like.
After sharing a dessert we got back in the truck and headed out to the next small town to maybe stay the night.
We found a cheap motel and stayed there and even slept in that morning, all the riding had exhausted us.
I decided I would go into town and pick us up a bite to eat, the path led me past a playground. I sat down on a bench and watched the children play.
I watched as a little girl begged for the attention of her mother to just watch her go down the slide. The mother ignoring her, focused all her attention on the other sibling. I watch as the mother left her children and went to her car to retrieve something. The act infuriated me.
I looked at my watch and decided I needed to get back. I picked up something to eat and went to the motel, still fuming inside.
As we drove I brought up the subject of adopting a child, she was overjoyed at the idea. To give a loving home to an unwanted child. That was exactly what I had witnessed, an unwanted child.
The longer we drove the better the plan played out in my mind. I was no evil mean person, I was helping someone.
We stopped a few hours out to get a bite to eat. Positioned my wife in front of the window and she pointed at children in the city park playing. I looked and watched until I found the unwanted child.
It was really too easy.
I presented her to my wife, she cried tears of joy as we fastened her in the seat belt and headed to our new life on a farm
