Summer Nights Romance.

Chapter V.

LUKE’S P.O.V.

Ashton was obviously a midst a hangover and Luke advised himself to avoid him for the rest of the morning… and afternoon… probably the whole day. Last night when Luke bade a goodnight to Collins though, he lied. He had thought she was a cool girl and wanted to spend more time with her. He could easily let his gaurd down with her if he wasn’t careful, but something about him was nervous around her and he wanted nothing other than for her to like him too.

He had kept his eyes peeled for her all morning when he saw her. She looked amazing. If it were possible, Luke could’ve sworn she looked even better than she did last night. His hands grew clammy and he was about to approach her when she tightly embraced some caterer. He had longer brown curls for hair and even from across the lawn, he could tell he had bright green eyes.

Something in Luke’s chest fell.

Luke saw Ashton still on the grass, showing no evidence of movement.

“What do you want Luke?” Ashton sighed, only addressing Luke when he stood in front of him, directly blocking his sun.

“I want to get out of here,” Luke said.

“Why? The brunch is so… exhilarating,” Ashton said, sounding anything but enthused.

“Listen, I just want to get out of here,” Luke sighed, sounding exasperated.

“What’s wrong Loo?” Ashton mocked.

“Nothing,” Luke growled, annoyed with the questions. Ashton usually wasn’t one to fight about leaving one of these kind of events. Sometimes he and Louis would purposely get kicked out.

“But Luke never wants to leave such a studious scene,” Ashton continued, showing no signs of movement still.

“Fuck’s sake, I’ll leave on my own,” and with that Luke began to walk off, leaving before the first course was even finished.

DEVIN’S P.O.V.

The brunch had been going exceedingly well. Except for the fact that her first love had popped out of nowhere. Immediately after discovering him she began to hang to Liam like a leech. She hadn’t told Liam about Harry. She had spoken of him, but only as an ‘ex’ when in reality that had been so much more than just boyfriend-girlfriend. They thought they would marry the other, they thought they had beaten everyone to the game of finding ‘the one’.

“Collins? Collins!” Devin shrieked suddenly. She saw her galloping off to god knows where, with none other than Harry trailing her shadow. Harry looked up nervously as Collins turned around with a wide smile.

“Hey Devin, look who I found,” Collins’ smile continued like she had just found the secret treasure in Neverland.

“Uh, yeah… I saw him earlier,” Devin felt her cheeks begin to burn unwillingly. She cursed herself for it and Harry smiled at the ground, almost proudly.

“So, yeah… I’ll see you later Dev?” Collins tried walking away.

“Fat chance,” Devin spat, laughing at her sister’s naive traits. “You need to stay here. I … I need you,” Devin forced, lying through her teeth.

“No you don’t, unless you want me to pull these out again,” Collins dug into her bra and pulled out a cigarette. Devin inhaled deeply and Harry’s eyes gave a little widen, taking a second look as Collins twirled it in her fingers.

“Collins, you can’t leave. We were all gonna surprise you with a welcome cake afterwards and then we were going to go to a bar… it’s to give a proper, welcome!” Devin concocted.

“Oh… really?” Collins eyed her sister suspiciously.

“Really,” Devin forced. “Harry can even stay if he wants!” Devin immediately regretted her last comment and wished she could take it back, but Harry’s eyes were light and Collins smirked.

“Okay, cool. C’mon Harry, let’s go meet some new friends,” Collins grinned, but eyed Devin. Devin could feel her cheeks grow in heat. What had she just invited in…

HARRY’S P.O.V.

Had Devin really just invited him to go to this ‘party’? She had always been a good liar when they were dating but he could tell a fib when it fell from her lips and the whole ‘welcome’ party was, daresay, proper bullshit to make Collins stay in her view. Another trait Harry remembered of Devin’s: controlling. Harry followed Collins inside the house and through the first floor. Devin had scurried off, probably for her boyfriend, leaving Collins and Harry to the empty house.

“Welcome party my ass,” Collins laughed, sitting at the kitchen counter.

“No shit,” Harry joined. The house was pristine. So clean and so perfect, like a catalogue. Harry could guess that Devin was in charge of it all, he would bet on that. Suddenly a few guys came straggling inside, looking for refuge from the dumbass brunch outside.

“Hey Collins!” one smiled widely. He had blonde spiked hair and bright blue eyes.

“Who’s this?” another one ordered, he looked less welcoming. His blue eyes were icy and his brown hair, uncombed.

“I’m Harry,” he offered a hand, even though he usually wouldn’t. Handshakes weren’t really his style, but then again neither was dining in a sorority house. A cold, unwelcoming silence fell between them all and Harry felt a lot of eyes on him, including a pair outside. To his dismay, it was Devin. Her brown eyes intent and nervous, yet so familiar. Harry couldn’t help but grin seeing her blush like a schoolgirl.

CALUM’S P.O.V.

“Devin, who’s your sister’s arm candy?” Evelyn oozed, catching her eye on some brunette with piercing eyes. He was tall and Evelyn had just finished describing him to Calum as ‘utterly delicious’.

“Oh, I wouldn’t know. Harry or something,” Devin took a rather large gulp of her orange juice that no longer looked so orange.

“Who?” Calum demanded, peering through the crowds. He hadn’t left Evelyn’s side all morning. “Oh… I know him… that’s Harry Styles. He’s a dick…”

“Yeah, but he’s hot,” Evelyn continued. “I suddenly feel like I’m about to faint. Excuse me while I go inside,” Evelyn dreamily walked off. Calum left fiddling with his drink.

“Don’t worry, she’ll probably want him for like one night,” Mikey offered.

“I just don’t know what else to do to have her know I like her… I mean I give hints.”

“Girls don’t pick up on that shit. I say, get totally fucking hammered tonight and just straight up tell her,” Mikey shrugged, like it was no big deal.

“Seriously?” Calum scoffed.

“Yeah, seriously.”

“I’m just gonna make sure she’s okay in there,” Calum said, following the same steps Evelyn had taken minutes prior.

“She’ll be fine. You’ll need a better excuse then that when you get inside,” Mikey called after him. Calum ignored him and continued his walk. Calum found himself inside the kitchen where Evelyn was giggling by Harry’s side, dangerously close, Collins leaning against the window, watching happily and Louis staring at Collins along with Niall laughing at the conversation.

“Oh, hey Calum,” Evelyn stood up, and flashed her beautiful smile.

“Hey,” Calum swallowed, feeling uncomfortable. “What are you guys up to?”

“Well, I was told that we were supposed to have a welcoming party for you,” Niall grinned, staring at Collins.

“And when did you decide that?” Collins wondered aloud.

“Actually I was only just informed about fifteen minutes ago… but then again, I’m always left outside of the loop,” Niall shrugged pathetically.

“I wonder why,” Louis sighed. Everyone laughed lightly at Niall .

“What party is Devin whispering madly about…” a new voice joined them. The door suddenly swung open and in came a rather lazy Ashton, looking disoriented and confused in his rather large black sunglasses.

“It’s my party Ashton,” Collins offered. “It’s your welcoming me here,”

“Well I guess any reason is a reason enough to party,” Ashton shrugged, “Welcome,” he replied sarcastically as he threw back a bottle of vodka he had found under the kitchen sink.

LUKE’S P.O.V.

He felt stupid for storming out earlier without even a proper reason too. The fact he let this girl bother him after knowing her for less than a day, sickened him even more. He was acting most unlike himself. He would usually have tried to score with whatever girl he had hung out with the night before, but the fact he claimed he was ‘cool’ with just being friends, confused him. How could those words come out of Luke Hemming’s mouth? No. He immediately vowed to stop this whole nice guy act around Collins. It simply wasn’t him.

He found himself back at the sorority house but it was a four o’clock sky that greeted him by this time. The brunch was most likely over by now, but he still walked to the back to see the tents being knocked down. No one was in sight even when he entered the house.

“Hello?” he called, but only Evelyn peeked out her door to greet him.

“What are you doing wearing that? Go put on a shirt that doesn’t have sweat stains throughout,” she looked disgusted as she looked down from the balcony.

“It’s hot outside,” he defended.

“I don’t care, go get ready,” she shooed.

“Ready for what?”

“We’re welcoming Collins to Austin or some shit… just, get ready. The Luke I know doesn’t need a reason to go lady hunting,” she shimmied jokingly.

“Okay, okay... fine, I’ll be getting ready.”
