Summer Nights Romance.

Chapter IV.

ASHTON P.O.V.

Ashton yawned as he rolled over to see Zayn already getting ready for the day. But instead of wearing his usual skinny jeans and rock band shirt, he was dressed in a button up.

“What are you doing? Preparing to meet the fucking queen?” Ashton laughed, suddenly discovering a throbbing pain in his head.

“Fuck you…” Zayn muttered as he tried tying his tie.

“So what are you doing?” Ashton yawned, flinging his legs over his welcoming bed and wiped his eyes. He began to massage his temple, this hangover was already a killer.

“The brunch… dumbass…” Zayn finally finished and began to fidget with his hair.

“Shit, that’s today?” Ashton sighed.

“Yes, and I advise you go or you’ll be kicked out of this frat for sure… besides, it’s free food, so hurry up,” Zayn then left the room. But Ashton advised himself to listen to Zayn. He had been on probation… so he forced himself out of bed and into clothes, no matter how much his head begged him to stop making such sudden movements.

The morning sun was bright and Ashton had sworn he actually had forgotten what morning suns was like. And goddamn it he was okay with that. He squinted unwillingly, even through his sunglass, as he crossed the street with Mikey, another frat boy who loved to experiment with different hair colors but overall a cool dude.

“Having a hard time this morning?” Mikey laughed.

“No shit,” Ashton grunted.

“Well, at least it’s catered.”

Ashton gave up being social though, his hangover was hardcore, and by the looks of it, he was the only one. He sat against a small brick wall towards the far right, in the shade when Luke wandered over to him.

“Hey dude,” Luke greeted, sitting down next to him.

“Hey,” Ashton felt like doing anything but socializing.

“I wanted to apologize for last night. I mean, I shouldn’t care how you address girls, ya know?” Luke offered.

“What?” Ashton had truly forgotten but then the memory resurfaced. He had tried getting with Luke’s friend, Cali? Collins? Whatever… he didn’t care now. “Oh, yeah… fuck that… did you end up scoring with her last night?”

“No, apparently she’s not into that… or dating, I don’t know. She seems weird about all that…” Luke said.

“To be quite frank Loo, I don’t give a fuck about your problems. Or hers. If she wants to play the damaged card, let her. Just make sure she knows, there’s already a line.”

Luke just pushed himself off the wall and left Ashton to some piece and quiet. But suddenly two voices carried over from the other side of the wall. Ashton realized he wasn’t in sight, but their voices were hushed so he tuned in.

He recognized Devin and Liam’s voice…

“She pulled out a box of cigarettes Liam! I don’t know what to do with her,” Devin seemed truly distraught.

“We’ll figure something out,” Liam assured.

“She won’t listen to us, not me at least. I know what she’s doing, she’s using our dad’s death to rebel and fuck up her own life,” Devin was close to tears.

“It’s only cigarettes,” Liam tried, but Devin sighed loudly at that.

“No it’s not… I don’t want to admit to this… but,” he voice grew quieter. “When Collins was showering, I snuck into the basement… and I found condoms. Like… boxes of condoms.”

“Shit…” Liam said.

“I just don’t know Liam,” Devin exhaled and Ashton could tell they were hugging this out. But Ashton couldn’t help but smirk as he heard this new information. Suddenly his hangover wasn’t an issue, nothing seemed to be.

HARRY’S P.O.V.

“Do you hear me Styles? No funny business. This is your last chance,” Angie warned, pointing sternly. Harry rolled his eyes.

“Yeah, yeah…” he sighed. He was working a catering event and he hadn’t been dreading anything more. It was at some sorority house Harry recognized to be his ex-best friend’s new address to be. He wished to do anything but to turn around and walk away from the house, but this was his third job this semester and they hadn’t been smart enough to fire him yet like the others.

He kept his head down as he began to set up.

“Harry! Look up, look alive!” Angie snapped.

“Really dude, you cool?” Harry’s coworker wondered, looking concerned.

“Yeah, yeah… I’m cool.”

“Harry, you’re in charge of drinks,” Angie ordered. Harry nodded and walked over to the drinks tent.

The lawn was decorated elegantly and frat boys and sorority girls sprinkled about, a few approaching him in snobbish outfits, using fancy words just to order a soda.

“Harry? Harry Styles?” a familiar voice summoned his attention to his right. He just about spilled his drink when he looked up to see Devin standing in front of him. She looked wonderful in her tight sundress and long blonde hair.

“Devin, hey,” he was nervous for the first time.

“What are you… You’re catering?”

“Uh, it appears so,” Harry gave a goofy pose much unlike the new him. Devin allowed a giggle, but returned to her poised stance all too soon. “Do you want a drink? Lemonade? We have pink.” He remembered it had been her favorite.

“Uh actually I stick with a water,” Devin nodded curtly. Harry gave a weak smile.

“Well, I should get back to my friends… well you know,” and with that Devin departed from the drinks stand. Harry hung his head, realizing how tight his stomach got. He thought he had been done with those brown eyes, the ones that seemed to haunt him for years. Yet another familiar voice pulled him to reality once again, but this voice surprised him even more.

“Collins?”

“Harry! Woah! I was hoping to see you sometime,” she scurried behind the table and embraced Harry tightly. Harry hugged her waist tightly.

“What are you doing here?”

“That’s the question,” Collins eyebrows cocked, annoyed. “What are you doing as a caterer?” she snickered.

“It’s a way to make some money,” Harry shrugged. He eyed Collins for the first time, seeing that she was in a black dress and a flannel tied across her waist along with black boots. Her hair was as untamed as it ever had been, but the outfit gave a rebellious feel, which surprised him even more. Harry remembered Collins as Devin’s little sister who ran around with flower crowns and tutus.

They continued their conversation as everyone began to sit down with their food. Harry’s stomach lurched though as he saw some guy holding Devin.

“Ah… so, even after all this time, huh?” Collins said.

“What do you mean?” Harry spat.

“Don’t play dumb Styles,” Collins stared into Harry’s familiar emerald eyes. “You still have heart that beats for my sister.”

“Harry Styles no longer has a beating heart for any girl,” Harry forced, but Collins just nodded slowly, pretending to believe him.

“You guys went through a lot…” Collins admitted suddenly.

Harry and Devin had made a history, and a long one at that. But Harry could put money on the fact that Devin had left it as just that and none of these new people knew anything about that past. Harry had changed a lot since then though, and so had Devin. Devin poised herself up, but Harry grew dirty. He hung with a tough crowd now.

“Well I should get going,” Collins said, placing her cup down.

“Leaving so soon?” Harry joked.

“I’m getting out of here… you wanna join?”

“More than ever, fuck this apron… I quit Angie!” Harry cried at Angie just sighed and began to ramble in Italian under her breath.

“Let’s head out,” Collins said, her eyes twinkling.
