My Favorite Date

Chapter Eight

I got off my night shift and headed straight to my apartment because I was completely exhausted. After Liam had visited, I had two of my patients stop breathing on me and I spent most of my night running from one end of the hallway to the other to check on them almost every ten minutes. I was walking up the stairs to my apartment and I smiled slightly when I saw Liam’s head leaning on the doorframe of my apartment door and his snores were lightly coming out. I shook him lightly and his eyes immediately opened and he looked around panicked before he saw me and smiled at me tiredly.

“How long have you been sleeping here?” I asked.

“Five-thirty,” he yawned as I helped him up off the ground, “I didn’t want to be late.”

“Li we’re going for breakfast slash lunch at eleven,” I giggled as I unlocked the door and I heard Ace rushing to the door.

“I know but I wanted to make sure you got home safe,” he yawned as he smiled at Ace as he picked him up and Ace licked his face.

“He likes you,” I giggled as Liam smiled goofily at Ace.

“I like him too,” he said, “Loki and you would get along great.”

“Come on,” I said after taking off my jacket and shoes, “Let’s get some sleep. After you left I had two patients stop breathing on me so I was ran ragged the last six hours of my shift.”

“I can agree with the tired part,” Liam said as he grabbed my hand.

We walked back to my room and I let Liam and Ace get comfortable while I went to the bathroom to change into my sweats. When I came back to the room, Liam and Ace were both asleep with Ace on top of Liam’s chest and Liam under the sheets snoring lightly. I giggled at the sight and quickly snapped a picture of it and sent it to Nicola and Ruth since I had gotten their numbers when I visited and then crawled into bed with Liam and let myself relax.

The next thing I woke up to was hearing pans being clanged around and Ace barking. I looked over at the clock to see it was noon and I quickly got out of bed. Liam and I were going to go get food at eleven. Why he didn’t wake me up was mystery. I quickly rushed out of my room and down to the kitchen to find Liam trying shush Ace.

“Shh Ace,” he said, “You’re going to wake up your mum and she’s going to be mad at us.”

“It’s too late,” I smiled lightly as I looked to find Liam covered in flour and my small kitchen table set up with pancakes, bacon, eggs, and a small amount of the daisies that Liam had bought for me last night.

“I didn’t want to wake you up because you looked so peaceful so I thought I would bring breakfast to you since I knew you would want to order breakfast,” he said smiling lightly, “I hope you don’t mind that I used your kitchen.”

“Not at all Liam,” I said smiling at him, “I’ve never had a boyfriend real or fake make me breakfast.”

“Glad I could be your first,” Liam smirked and I just rolled my eyes and walked over to the table and took a seat.

As I put some pancakes on my plate, Liam sat down across from me. I was feeling a bit self-conscious and I knew Liam could tell because he was smirking.

“Am I making you nervous Melanie?” he asked.

“I don’t know Liam,” I replied smirking, “I have seen you almost naked as a child.”

Liam’s face then drained and I just giggled at his reaction.

“They showed you that picture,” he groaned.

“Yes with your black ski mask and box of cereal,” I giggled and he just put his forehead on the table.

“I think you were a cute kid growing up,” I said shrugging my shoulders taking a bite of Liam’s pancakes and moaned, “And a great pancake maker. These are better than my cousin Harry’s pancakes and he makes the best.”

Liam just laughed at me as he grabbed some food himself and we continued eating. We were just eating and talking about what was going to happen when we got to New York when Liam brought up a really touchy subject.

“You know you haven’t really talked about Louis,” he said, “What really went down between the two of you?”

I then stopped eating and looked up at Liam to see him waiting to see what my response would be.

“I don’t really want to talk about it,” I mumbled looking down at my plate.

“Mel I can’t do much if I don’t know what he did to you,” Liam said after a few moments of silence.

“Liam I just don’t really want to talk about it,” I said, “I’ve spent so hard trying to forget that part of my life.”

Liam sighed and ran a hand through his hair. He looked over at me and stood up offering me his hand.

“Come on,” he said as I looked at him confused, “If I want to know about Louis you might as well know about how I got started in this business. We’ll get dressed and we’ll go get some coffee and take a walk okay?”

“Okay,” I sighed standing up with Liam’s help and we walked to my room with Ace following us.

We both got ready and I looked over at Ace and smiled.

“Come on boy,” I said, “We’ll take you out for a walk.”

Liam smiled at the idea and then asked if we could stop to go get Loki as well. I agreed and we made our way to Liam’s car and then to his apartment. Liam quickly rushed up to his apartment and grabbed Loki and we started our walk to a coffee cart and then to the park close to Liam’s
apartment building. Liam ordered our drinks for us and then we soon started walking.

“I’m going to start okay,” Liam said, “This way you can think of what you want to tell me?”

“Okay,” I said quietly and he gave me a small smile.

He took a deep breath and started his story.

“I never wanted to be in this position,” he said, “Being an escort of sorts. I had plans of graduating college, finding the perfect girl, settling down and getting married, having babies and making a happy family. I thought I found that too. I dated a girl named Danielle since I started at the university. We had been together four years and she was my everything. She my world. I did everything for her. Took her to the movies she wanted to go, went to every dance recital she was in, supported her when she decided to drop out of university, I truly loved her. My family even loved her. They thought she was the perfect girl for me, so after four years of dating and a year of living together, I decided to propose to her. After weeks and weeks of planning and picking out the right ring, I decided to propose to her on the night of our four year anniversary. The night I decided I was going to propose, I missed my class for the day and went to the flat Danielle and I shared because I was going to cook a romantic dinner and decorate everything for her. When I got home, however, I walked in on her cheating on me with another lad on the living room couch.”

As Liam told his story of heartbreak I could feel his pain and my stiches on my heart starting to rip apart and my pain starting to course everywhere in my body.

“I kicked both of them out and spent almost a month just going to school and coming home,” he said, “Then one day while I was sitting at a bar getting drunk, a man named Jay, approached me and offered me a way to deal with my heartbreak. He offered me a job as an escort. He told me that I would be the one breaking hearts not the other way around and after spending months with all the pain and heartache I accepted. Here I am two years later, one of the most asked for escorts in London and a man with a hardened heart.”

Liam then took this time to look at me and all I could focus on was how much hurt he had when he told his story.

“And the truth is,” he said a bit quieter, “Every date I take I hope is the last one because I’m still looking for that perfect girl.”

I then looked up at him to find him looking down at me and for some reason, Liam’s expression was one that I had never seen before. It was one of hope and vulnerability and for some reason I thought it was because maybe I was his last date.

“I’m so sorry for your heartbreak,” I replied quietly, “I know exactly what it’s like to be cheated on.”

“You do?” he asked and I nodded my head.

“Louis’s family and my family have known each other for years,” I started out, “We practically grew up together because my grandmother and Louis’s grandmother were the best of friends so my mom and his mom grew up together and they wanted us to do the same which is what happened. Louis and I were always attached at the hip growing up. We did practically everything together and as we grew up, I started feeling differently towards Louis than I did when we were kids. I wanted to be Louis’s girlfriend when we were around fourteen. Apparently he wanted to be more than friends too. Louis was a year older than I was so when I started Grade 9 at the boarding school we went to Louis asked me to be his girlfriend. Of course I agreed and we dated throughout my entire high school career. Hell we even dated throughout my college career as well. We didn’t go to the same university however. Louis went to Harvard in the US while I stayed here in London and went to nursing school here. Louis and I never really got to see each other during college just during our breaks and the occasional times when I would fly to see him. We skyped and called each other every chance we got but it was mostly me just leaving him messages and him never returning them. However the last time I saw Louis, was three weeks before I graduated college. I decided to surprise him since I was ahead in my school work and I had talked to my professors about it. They gave me the week off and I was going to go spend the week with Louis. I got on a plane and told my parents to keep it a secret from him so it would be a grand surprise. I drove to the apartment he had ten minutes from campus and was super excited to see him since the last time I had seen him was for spring break. I had left my bags in my car so it would be easier after I surprised him. I made my way up the stairs and used the key he had given me three years prior. I opened the door and there I found him and some other girl ripping each other’s clothes off in his hallway. The girl hadn’t heard the door open but Louis did and I can remember the look he gave me when he saw me. It wasn’t shock or guilt. It was an annoyed look. He pushed the girl off of him and quickly came to where I was frozen to. He grabbed my arm pulled me in the apartment and shut the door. He then dragged me from the hallway and into his room where he shut the door and then proceeded to yell at me for coming unannounced. I was still in shock from what I had seen so all I could ask was why and for how long. Louis’s response was for all five years he was at Harvard and because I was never here to satisfy his needs. All I remember then doing was telling him that I wished him the best and walked out of that apartment and never looked back.”

I took a shaky breath and felt Liam’s arm pull me closer to his side.

“I then proceeded to call my mom and cry to her about how could Louis do this to me after giving him eight years of loyalty and love,” I said, “And you want to know what my mom said? She told me that it was my fault because as a girlfriend it is my job to make sure my boyfriend is happy and I didn’t do that. I haven’t been home in a year because of the break up. I always say that I can’t get any of the holidays off because I’m one of the new employees on the floor and I don’t have that many days off.”

I couldn’t really continue after that so I just took a deep breath and looked up to see Liam just looking at me with pain in his eyes as well and I sighed looking down at ground.

“I sound pathetic huh?” I asked and I looked up to see Liam giving me a weird look.

“I think you sound like a very classy woman Mel,” Liam said, “I know if I was in your position I would have slapped him and did a lot of other things, and when we get to New York I am definitely going to make Louis’s life hell for you.”

“Thanks Liam,” I said smiling lightly, “For telling me something very personal and being a good friend. I really appreciate it.”

“I’d do anything for you Mel,” he replied kissing the top of my head as we continued walking our dogs, “You are important to me.”

And for the moment, I knew Liam had another meaning for what he had just told me but I wasn’t going to ruin it by asking what he meant.
