My Favorite Date

Chapter Seventeen

The next morning I woke up expecting to be wrapped up in Liam’s arm and woke up to have Liam’s side of the bed empty. I frowned at my discovery and started looking for a note because I knew Liam would do that. When I didn’t find a note, I quickly grabbed some clothes and then noticed that Liam’s things were gone. I closed my eyes and could feel my heart breaking. I was swallowing the lump in my throat when there was a knock at the door. I looked at the time to see that it was only seven in the morning. I quickly rushed over to the door hoping it was Liam. I opened it and frowned to see it was only Louis standing there with something behind his back.

“Hi Louis,” I said.

“Hey beautiful,” Louis said smiling at me, “Want to have some breakfast together? I brought your favorite.”

“Sure,” I said kind of monotone, “Come on in.”

“Where’s Liam?” Louis asked confused.

“He left,” I said quietly.

“What?” Louis asked and his chipper mood quickly changed to one of concern.

“I don’t know Louis,” I sighed sitting on the couch, “We slept together and he left. I. . .”

I couldn’t really form any other words and I just shook my head and put my head in my hands.

“Am I that bad?” was all I could ask Louis feeling tears starting to form, “Am I really that bad of a girlfriend?”

Louis put the bag of food on the coffee table and pulled me in for a giant hug as I felt the flood gates released.

“No,” Louis said, “You’re one of the best girlfriends in the world Mel. Liam is the stupidest guy to walk out like that. Please don’t think you are the worst girlfriend on the planet because love, you are far from it.”

“Really?” I asked sniffling and looking up at Louis.

“Really,” he said, “And I was an idiot to ever break up and cheat on you.”

“Thanks Lou,” I said as I put my head on his chest and he pulled me into another comforting hug.

“For what?” he asked.

“Being a really good friend right now,” I said.

“Anytime beautiful,” he replied quietly.

After a few minutes of me sniffling, we ate the breakfast that Louis brought over which consisted of me making coffee for us and eating chocolate croissants from the kitchen at the main house. Louis and I both continued to catch up and I was shocked that he was close to making partner in the firm he was working for.

“That’s great Lou!” I said grinning, “You’re almost partner that’s incredible!”

“Thanks,” Louis replied blushing slightly, “I haven’t told many people about it yet because I’m not quite sure but I’m pretty sure I’m going to make partner within the next month or so.”

“I’m so proud of you!” I exclaimed hugging him tightly, “That’s great!”

“Thank you Mel,” he said and I put our plates in the dishes and washed our dishes.

I was putting the dishes away when Louis asked me a question that threw me off guard.

“Mel when we were together did you ever love me?” he asked and I looked at him to see that he was serious.

“Lou,” I started, “I loved you ever since we started dating. I took it really hard when I found out you were cheating and when you broke up with me. I thought something was wrong with me. I figured I was broken in some way. Obviously there is something wrong with me because Liam just left and I didn’t see it coming but Louis I loved you with everything I had.”

“Loved?” Louis asked and I gave him a small sad smile.

“As in the past tense,” I said, “Louis I don’t think I could go back and date you again. I just would be so nervous and paranoid that you would leave me again that I would ruin the relationship over again. I still do and will always love you like a best friend and brother though. No matter how much of a douche bag you are sometimes.”

“Really,” Louis said shocked, “I would think that you would nothing to do with me after what I pulled on you. I mean I’m the reason why you’ve been away for so long.”

“You were but that was because I thought I wouldn’t be able to face you,” I said, “And I was completely wrong. I can and I have.”

“Mel,” Louis said, “I’m really sorry about Liam leaving. You don’t deserve that at all you’re one of the best girlfriends ever around.”

“Thanks Lou,” I said, “Let me get ready and we’ll go drop the bomb to both my sister and mother about Liam leaving.

“Okay,” he said, “I’ll be watching telly.”

“Alright,” I said and made my way back to the bedroom and noticed a bright yellow sticky note I missed early on the bathroom door.

I walked over to the door and pulled it off to read the words I’m sorry and remember your promise to me. –Liam. I sighed as I crumpled up the paper and threw it in the trash. No wonder he was making me promise not hate me, he probably had the plan of leaving early all along. I sadly shook my head started getting ready since tonight was the rehearsal and tomorrow was the wedding. I quickly got ready and came out to find Louis reading something on the table.

“What are you reading Lou?” I asked confused and my eyes widened when I realized it was the contract that Liam and I came up with.

“You hired Liam,” Louis said looking at me shocked.

I then sighed and figured it was going to be a long walk back to the main house and I felt like I owed it to Louis since he was the one to comfort me.

“Yeah,” I said, “I hired Liam to be my date for the wedding. I haven’t dated anyone since we broke up Louis and I didn’t want you to think I was some heartbroken puppy waiting for you to come back.”

“What?” Louis asked confused.

“I wanted to make you jealous because everyone thought I was still hung up on you. I wanted to prove to you and everyone else that I wasn’t,” I said as we walked out of the house, “I guess I was the fool to do that.”

"So how did he know everything?" Louis asked.

"We had an entire month to get to know each other and we coached each other on information we needed to know," I said.

“So what you and Liam had. . .” Louis started.

“I don’t know if it wasn’t completely real for him but it was fairly real for me,” I sighed, “I fell for my hired date and forgot that I was just a job for him and got burned by it. Pathetic huh?”

“Not at all Mel,” Louis said throwing an arm around my shoulders, “I find it quite nice that you wanted to prove to all of us you weren’t hung up on me. I figured you weren’t hung up on me but were afraid you were going to get burned badly by another guy like I did to do. I’m sorry that kind of happened to you again because you deserve someone so much better than the both of us now.”

“Thanks Louis,” I said, “I’m so glad you’re one of my best friends.”

“Me too Mel,” he said as we made our way up the house, “I’m glad you’re one of my best friends too. I would go crazy if I didn’t have you in my life and I have been the last couple of years.”

“Well let’s not do that again,” I said, “We stay in touch okay?”

“Okay,” he said as we walked into the kitchen to find everyone pacing and Louis whispered in my ear, “I’ll ask the question. What’s wrong?”

“Liam didn’t tell you Mel?” my father asked, “He said he had a family emergency and had to fly back home last night. Now we’re short a. . .”

“This is all your fault!” my mother exclaimed, “Because you had to bring that boyfriend of yours and now he leaves us high and dry. Humph! What kind of man. . .”

My phone dinged and I looked to see Liam’s name pop up and I quickly opened the text message.

My dad had a heart attack. I’m sorry to leave like that. Please tell your family I’m greatly sorry. xLiam

I didn’t know how real that was but I cut my mother off.

“His father had a heart attack,” I said looking up and glaring at her, “And that boyfriend you were so excited to have and loved is mine. Don’t you dare bash him because he needed to go see his father unlike when you didn’t go see yours!”

Everyone gasped and my mother stopped and looked at me like I had slapped her in the face.

“All you’ve ever done since I gotten here is rip into every little thing that I’ve done wrong and it ends here,” I said finally getting everything off my chest, “Since he was my partner I will find another one, like I always do when something is wrong. Instead of pointing fingers and blaming everyone else like you do I will find another person don’t worry.”

With that I just stormed out of the kitchen and I into a private room and just let all the tears I had holding in out. I don’t know how I was going to deal with everything but I was going to figure it all out.
