My Favorite Date

Chapter Thirteen

We had pulled up to the country club and we all got out of our respective cars. Liam and I were following behind everyone, when he asked me the question I knew was coming.

“What did your mother tell you?” he asked, “You’ve been more interested in the wedding since she’s spoken to you.”

“It’s nothing Liam,” I lied shaking my head, “Come on let’s get inside before they noticed we weren’t following.”

Liam sighed knowing I wasn’t going to tell him here and followed me into the club and we tacked on the end of the group. Of course my parents had separated us like always. Lilly, Greg, Niall, Harry, Louis, Thomas, Jillian, Liam, I all had a table for us in the younger room while my parents, grandparents, and Greg’s and Niall’s parents all were eating in the other dining room. We went to our respective rooms and I could see Liam’s mouth drop. I smiled lightly at him and he just looked down at me.

“Pretty fancy right?” I asked as we walked towards the table.

“And you refuse to live this lifestyle?” he asked looking at me and I shrugged my shoulders.

“I’m not into showing how successful I am,” I said, “I know I’m successful and that’s all that matters.”

Liam just smiled down at me and shook his head.

“You always seem to say something that amazes me,” he said and I just laughed as we sat down with everyone, of course Liam pulled out my chair like the gentleman he is.

“Damn it Liam,” Greg teased, “You’re making us all look bad.”

Everyone laughed because Lilly teased Greg because Liam pulled out my chair and so did Thomas but he didn’t do anything.

“What do you mean we?” Thomas teased, “I pulled out my wife’s chair too.”

We were all laughing and having a fun time. After dinner we were all just talking and catching up when Louis started asking questions.

“So Mel you never told us how you’re doing in London,” Louis started and I looked up at Louis.

“I’m doing pretty well for myself,” I said smiling down at my glass and then looked back up, “I’ve moved up a little bit. My floor hired a couple newly graduated nurses so I’ve been helping train them. I was going to wait until after the wedding but since you asked, I’ve been offered by the hospital to go back to school to get my Clinical Nurse Specialist degree in pediatric oncology on them.”

“Wait,” Liam said as everyone was spilling congratulations at me, “When were you going to tell me?”

“Well remember when work called the night before we left?” I asked and he nodded his head.

“Well it was my charge nurse and she told me the news,” I said, “I told her I would get back to them when we got back to.”

“That’s great!” he grinned and kissed me, “I’m so proud of you.”

I just laughed and blushed as everyone oooed and awed. However everyone didn’t know how true Liam was. I could tell just by how he looked at me that he was proud of me, it wasn’t just an act. It was the truth.

“Well we’ll tell Mom and Dad after the wedding then,” Lilly smiled lightly at me, “That way nothing gets overlooked okay?”

“Deal,” I said.

“Alright kiddos,” Thomas said, “Time for us men to steal Liam away from you ladies and for us to man bond.”

“I still find it weird that you are so desperate to find a second bromance since you and Greg have one already,” Lilly said and both Jillian and I laughed.

“You’re so lucky it’s your wedding Lil,” he said.

The boys then left to go head to the bar and I was left with my sister and sister-in-law. Both girls looked over at me and nervously got up with them and we headed out towards the gardens where we grabbed a table and Lilly ordered us drinks.

“So you want to tell us the real story about you and Liam?” Lilly asked me and I looked over at Jillian who gave me a small smile.

“Sweetheart Lilly and I both could tell that you hired him,” Jillian said and I sighed and put my head on the table.

“I’m pathetic aren’t I?” I asked.

“Not at all Mel,” Lilly said, “I consider it a smart move.”

“What?” I asked looking up at her like she was crazy.

“It is,” Jillian said, “Because let’s be honest Mel, we all know you’re not getting back with Louis no matter how hard he tries to win you back. That boy broke you beyond belief and we both know you. Once someone screws you over you’re done, no second chances.”

“You want the full story?” I asked knowing I wouldn’t be able to lie to them.

“From start to now,” Lilly said.

That then started the hour and a half story of how I had met Liam a month prior, hired him and how we got to know each other in detail. I told them everything, even the sleep talking I had overheard Liam talking. When I was done with my story, I was looking at my now empty wine glass and looked up at the girls with a feeling of hopelessness.

“Get that look off your face,” Lilly said, “I know that look and you are not hopeless. This is not a hopeless case. By the time this wedding is over we are going to get Liam to admit that he is really head over heels for you and it’s not just an act.”

“Lilly you’re talking crazy,” I said and Jillian shook her head.

“We aren’t,” Jillian said, “We’re in eyesight of the boys and I swear Mel that boy has been keeping an eye on you all night. We even caught him smiling at you when the boys were all deep in conversation. He feels something for you and I know you’re already head over heels for him because you willingly went to meet his family.”

I just sighed and shook my head. Both my sisters were crazy but I wasn’t going to voice my opinion. There was no use in arguing. Before I could say anything else, I heard my name being called and I turned around to see, Chad, a guy that I had dated in between the small breakup Louis and I had when we had just started dating.

“Hey Chad,” I said smiling politely at him, “Long time no see. How’s everything.”

“It’s going great,” he said, “You looking amazing. How’s London. My parents were telling me you’re a nurse now.”

“Yeah I am,” I said smiling at him, “I’m loving my job and I love London too. How’s the marketing business going? You started your own marketing firm in LA didn’t you?”

“I did,” he said smiling, “How did you know that?”

“Chad you’ve always wanted to start your own marketing firm and I’m pretty sure I recognized the ad in a magazine I had seen in the airport in Atlanta,” I smiled, “It had your sketches written all over it.”

Chad just laughed and I smiled.

“You always remembered everything,” Chad said smiling at me.

Chad’s smile then turned into confusion when I felt someone’s hand wrap around my waist. I looked up to see Liam smiling lightly at me but I could tell he was confused but there was something else behind his eyes as well but I couldn’t figure it out.

“Chad I want you meet my boyfriend Liam Payne,” I said, “Liam meet a really good friend of mine Chad Fulton. He owns E-Marketing Inc.”

“Nice to meet you,” Chad said shaking Liam’s hand, “What happened to you and Louis?”

“We broke up a few years ago,” I said, “We’re still friends but we’re not together anymore.”

“Well that’s a shame,” Chad said shaking his head, “He was an idiot. You’ve got yourself a great girl Liam. Don’t let her go.”

I then blushed and Liam chuckled and agreed with Chad.

“I know mate,” he said, “I’m glad I get to date her now. I’m sorry to be rude but I was sent to get the ladies. I think your father wants to leave.”

“Oh okay,” I said and then turned to smile at Chad, “it was good seeing you again Chad.”

“We’ll have to catch up,” he said as we hugged, “You’re in town for a few weeks right?”

“I have two weeks here,” I smiled, “Lilly gets married this weekend and then I was going to show Liam around where I grew up here.”

“Alright,” he said and smiled at me, “I’ll call your grandparent’s house then soon.”

“Nice meeting you mate,” Liam said shaking Chad’s hand.

“Nice to meet you too,” Chad said and we then turned to see that both Lilly and Jillian were smirking at me.

Once we moved out of ear shot, Liam asked the question.

“And who was that?” he asked.

“Well Lou and I broke up for a short six weeks when we first started dating and I dated Chad for four of those six weeks,” I said.

“Way to tell me,” Liam teased and I just rolled my eyes.

“You sound jealous Payne,” I teased.

“Oh I am,” he said and I looked up to see that he was dead serious.

“You are not serious,” I said shocked and Liam nodded his head.

“One hundred percent serious,” Liam said, “He still likes you. He was glaring at me the entire time you weren’t looking. You’re a great catch Mel. Any guy would be lucky to have you on their arm.”

“Thanks Liam,” I blushed and he just smiled and kissed my temple.

“Come on,” he said, “Let’s get going.”

We then headed towards where my sister and Greg were waiting for us.

“Everyone left already,” Greg said, “We’re looking for Louis because he disappeared.”

“I know where he is,” I said, “I’ll go get him and meet you back at the house.”

“Mel,” Liam said and I could see the worry in his eyes and I smiled lightly.

“I’ll be fine Liam,” I said, “We were friends long before all the bad things happened. Friends help friends out. We’ll meet you at home.”

“Okay,” Liam sighed and he kissed me good bye, “Be careful.”

“I will,” I said and then kissed him once last time.

I then turned around and headed to the one spot that Louis could be in this country club when he wanted to be alone, the abandoned barn in the woods next to the club.
