Kiss Me

The X-Factor

“Are you sure you want to do this?” my mum asked as she tucked my hair behind my ear. “More than anything in this world. Unless I can’t sing...can I sing? Why did you ask? Don’t make me go in there if I can’t sing!” I panicked. “Honey, calm down. You sound like an angel when you sing. If they don’t like you, just know that I love you to death and will always love your voice.” She comforted me. “Alright, Nevaeh Beaumont, you’re up next.” The X-Factor producer told me. I hugged my mum and turned around to walk through the doors. My mind was plagued with negative thoughts and I hesitated to move forward, until I looked over and saw a young boy pacing around as nervous as can be. Somehow it inspired me enough to force me through the doors to face the panel of judges.

“Hi there, what’s your name?” Cheryl asked. “Nevaeh Beaumont” I replied, trying to keep my cool. “…and how old are you?” she added. “I’m 14, I’ll be 15 in a few months.” I smiled at her, hoping she wouldn’t think I was too young. “Alright, and what will you sing for us today?” she asked her final question. “Beautiful by Christina Aguilera.” I replied with confidence, and Simon flashed a cheeky smile, convinced that I was going to pale in comparison. “Off you go, then.” Louis said.
I closed my eyes and began to sing, feeling every word and emotion of the song that I sang out. “Everyday is so wonderful and suddenly, it’s hard to breathe. Now and then I get insecure from all the pain. I’m so ashamed.” I opened my eyes to see Louis’ mouth gaped open. “I am beautiful no matter what they say, words can’t bring me down. I am beautiful in every single way. Yes, words can’t bring me down, oh no. So don’t you bring me down today.” I finished. Louis and Cheryl both clapped, as Simon had a different cheeky smile on that said I proved him wrong. I smiled as they applauded me, hoping their applause was a good thing. “That was beautiful.” Cheryl’s voice broke a little from tears that were forming in her eyes and nodded yes to the judges. “You may be young, but your voice isn’t and you are definitely ready for this competition.” Louis said. “I liked it, you made it your own and I think you sounded nice. Good job.” Simon nodded at me. “You have 3 yeses, congratulations Nevaeh.” Cheryl said with a big smile on her face. My eyes were full of tears but I held back my excitement and happiness. “Thank you so much!” I told them and walked out.

I took one look at my mum and she knew. She screamed, jumped up and down and I ended up doing the same. We hugged and I could see the same nervous boy behind my mum, only he was sitting down this time. He was as pale as a ghost from fear, so I decided to walk over and introduce myself. “I’ll be right back.” I let go of my mum and walked over to the boy. “Hello, I’m Nevaeh.” I held out my hand. He looked up at me, stood up and took my hand to be polite. “Nice to meet you, I’m Liam.” He said almost out of breath. I knew what was wrong with him so instead of asking questions I jumped right to solutions. “I see that you’re going to sing for them in another 10 minutes or so. There’s nothing to worry about. They’re all very nice, even Simon.” I tried comforting him. “Says you, Miss Angel Voice.” He said smirking. “They’re kind regardless of your voice, I promise that you’ll be fine. If you’d like I’ll wait out here for you with your family.” I said with a reassuring tone. “You’re so convincing. Thank you for that, I really needed it. If you’d like to stay out here that’d be fine with me.” He replied. He didn’t go in for another 5 minutes or so, so we got in as much talking as we could. It was my way of keeping his mind from going wild with bad thoughts.
“Liam Payne, you can go in now.” The producer gestured towards the doors. “Good luck!” I called out to him. “Thank you. Here goes nothing.” He chuckled and walked through the doors. I went up to the door with his family to get a good listen. From what I heard, he sang very well. We stepped back when we heard footsteps approaching the door. Liam came out wearing the biggest smile across his face and we all knew that he made it. His family went nuts, and I stood off to the side with my mum. “Honey, I’ll go get the car and meet you there in a bit.” My mum whispered in my ear. Liam looked at me, and I mouthed the words “Told you so.” He walked over to me, picked me up off the ground and spun me around. “I would’ve let my nerves get the best of me if it weren’t for you. Thank you so much.” He said, gratefully. “It’s no problem. I’ll see you again in a few weeks.” I started to walk away until I felt him grab my arm. “Wait, I’m no good at this, but you’re really sweet and…well…could I have your number?” he laughed a little at his shyness. “Of course you can.” I wrote my number down on a slip of paper and handed it to him. “I’ll call you tonight…or text you…or something. Yeah. Thank you again! You’re a wonderful person.” Liam hugged me again. “Talk soon, then.” I let go and waved goodbye.

That night I had a text from Liam; we stayed up until 3 A.M. talking about our lives, and how excited we were to be on X-Factor. It was crazy how quickly we became best friends. I had completely forgotten about Madeline, just like she had forgotten about me. Or she was too busy…one or the other. It didn’t hurt me as much because I was pretty busy, myself.

Liam and I had each others backs through it all; we made it through auditions as well as boot camp; all we had to do now was make it past the judge’s houses. Simon was a tough one, and I knew that he would be hard on Liam. What made it harder was that he had to travel to Barbados, and wouldn't be able to contact me if he needed me.
I made it to Cheryl’s house and practiced with the 5 other girls who were just as nervous as I was. It was best to keep to myself because with nerves and stress overwhelming you, I didn’t want anyone to start drama with me. Two girls were going at it, while the rest of us sat and watched. As the contestants started to thin, I knew that it was almost time for me to sing. I took a deep breath, and went outside where Cheryl and her guest judge Kimberely Walsh were. “Hi Nevaeh, how you feeling?” she asked. “A little nervous but I’m great thanks.” I said. “Great, what are you going to be singing for us today?” she went through her usual questions. “Realize by Colbie Caillat.” I replied, and she gave me the okay to start. "Take time to realize that your warmth is crashing down on in."
As the song came to an end, Kimberely applauded and said to Cheryl "You told me she was good, but I wasn't expecting this. Nevaeh, you blew me away. Your voice is beautiful, I loved it and I hope that you continue on with your dream if the X-Factor doesn't work out for you." I was relieved as well as nervous because her comment was good and bad at the same time.

The next day we all gathered at Cheryl's again to find out the results. While we waited in the living room, one by one each girl went to see what the verdict was and I was the last one. I walked towards the room as if I was walking the plank. This was it. This was my last shot. "Nevaeh, hi. How are you?" Cheryl asked. "I'm a little bit scared, but I'll be fine." I replied with a half smile. "It's alright, don't be scared." she said with a big smile on her face and continued "...because I have great news. I've picked you as one of my top 3." My eyes started to water and I couldn't contain my happiness. I screamed, ran up to her and hugged her "Thank you thank you thank you!" I cried out.

When Liam arrived back home, I went out to get some coffee with him and exchange stories. We met up at a cafe and I was too excited to hold back any longer so the second I saw him, I jumped on him and told him I had made it to the next round. He was happy for me, but I could tell that he was really upset. "Unfortunately I didn't make it in but I'm so proud of you, and will be rooting for you from the stands." he said, holding me tighter. I pulled away from him "I'm so sorry. You're not giving up, though. You better audition for the next X-Factor, I won't allow you to give up so easily." I told him. "You're so wonderful, Nevaeh. Thank you for supporting me through everything. I can't wait for my best friend to be the next big thing here." he said.
--------

I made it all the way to the final 2; it was me and JLS. There were no words to describe how bad I wanted to win this. My heart was beating out of my chest and I convinced myself that I was going to pass out. I held hands with Cheryl and waited for the results from Dermot. "The winner of the 2008 X-Factor is..." everyone fell completely silent and I looked down as tears started to form in my eyes. "NEVAEH BEAUMONT!" I looked up in shock, fell down to my knees and sobbed. All I could do was cry and say thank you to Cheryl and everybody else for their love and support. I was helped up, and tried to regain myself to sing for the last time on the stage as an X-Factor contestant. Cheryl hugged me, and walked back to her seat while the song 'A Moment Like This' began to play. I put the microphone up to my mouth and sang as if that was the last time I would ever sing. Everyone cheered and my family ran up to the stage when I was done with the song. Liam was in the crowd that was swarming me so when I finally reached him he picked me up and spun me around like he had at auditions. "Congratulations, Miss Angel Voice." he put me down and had cheeky smile on his face. "I promise you that we'll see each other as much as possible after my schedule starts to clear. Thank you for being here for me through everything because you're the only one that's kept me sane this whole show." I said to him. "Anything for my best friend. After you sign posters or whatever you famous people do, you should stop by. My family will be having a celebration for your win." he said. I smiled "I'll definitely stop by."

Everything settled down, and that night I celebrated with my family and then Liam's. Part of me didn't want the night to end because I knew that I would be busy for the next few months. I was excited to start the next chapter of my life but there was one problem.
Was I able to handle it?
