Diana

Chapter 3

Diana found herself awake in the middle of the night and when she tried to sleep again, she failed miserably due to the constant whooshing of the rain and wind across the roof. She even pulled her quilt over her head, and added the pillow to drown away the voices but nothing worked. So, instead she stared at the ceiling throughout the night, with thousand of things running through her mind at once. By the time, the rain settled into a quieter drizzle, it was almost dawn.

She walked to her window and she could see was thick fog everywhere, making it impossible to see anything else. Even the sky wasn’t visible and it felt as if she was trapped in a cage. Diana went to her bathroom, got fresh, and changed her clothes just to hear Jenna call her down for the breakfast. She walked down the stairs in a grumpy mood as her school was starting from today and she always hated to be a new student.

Silvercoast High School, had a total of only two hundred and twenty students including Diana which was quite terrifying as there were more than four hundred people in her junior class alone back in London. Most of these kids here had grown up together while Diana was the new girl from a big city. Even though she had quite an experience of being the new awkward girl in the school, she never got used to everyone staring at her like she was some kind of freak.

She sat at one of the chair of the newly furnished round oak table as she saw Jenna running around, not knowing what to do and failed to notice Diana when she entered the room.

“Good morning, Jenna.” Diana said after a while.

“Oh, God!! Diana you scared me. When did you come?” Jenna asked; still busy making breakfast at the kitchen counter.

“You called me for breakfast.” Diana replied with a small smile as she saw how panicked Jenna was.

“I am so sorry, Diana. I woke up late and now I haven’t finished preparing the breakfast. I am going to make you late on the first day of your school.” Jenna apologized.

“Jenna.” Diana said, trying to get her attention.

“Yes?”

“Jenna look at the clock, please.”

“What?” Jenna asked as she turned her head to look at the clock and stopped short. The clock read six thirty in the morning while Diana’s school was to start at seven thirty. Jenna dropped the knife in her hand on the counter and slumped to the ground.

“I thought I was running late.” Jenna mumbled to herself.

“It’s alright. Please don’t get so worked up about it.” Diana said as she sat on the floor besides Jenna.

“How will I handle when I will have my own kids?”

“You will be a great mother Jenna.” Diana said trying to comfort Jenna.

“I know that you be way better than my mother.” Diana mumbled and she suddenly felt Jenna’s hand on her shoulder. She looked at Jenna who was giving her a sympathetic look; a look that Diana usually manages to get and loathes.

“Anyways, I came down to tell you that I am gonna head early; have to collect my papers from the office and find my way to my classes.” Diana said as she got up and helped Jenna to get up.

“What about your breakfast?” Jenna asked.

“I am not feeling hungry right now. I will eat in the cafeteria.” Diana replied as she picked up her bag that she left on the stairs while coming down and headed towards the door.

“Bye Jenna.” Diana yelled as she opened the front door.

“Diana wait!!” Jenna called a she ran from the kitchen. “Take the money and I won’t be home when you get back, so here is the key.” She said as she handed the money and the house key to Diana who gave a quick nod and headed out into the rain.

It was just drizzling still, not enough to soak Diana through immediately. She gripped her jacket tightly as the cold wind blew past her. She was in a hurry to get out of the misty wet that swirled around her head and clung to her hair under her beanie. She quickly jumped inside her car which was shipped here before. Inside the car, it was nice and dry. She started the engine, turned up the volume of radio and drove away from her house.

Finding the school wasn't difficult in Silvercoast. The school was just off the highway, with only a sign, which declared it to be the Silvercoast High School. The building wasn’t huge and looked like a collection of matching houses, built with maroon-colored bricks and had many trees and shrubs surrounding it. As Diana parked her car, she noticed that one of the buildings had a small sign over the door reading ‘Office’. The parking lot was almost empty. She unwillingly stepped out of her car and headed towards the office. Diana took a deep breath before opening the door. Inside, it was brightly lit, and warmer than she had hoped. The office was small; a little waiting area with padded folding chairs, notices and awards cluttering the walls, a big clock. There were two desks, on one of which was occupied by a small, brunette woman wearing glasses and a simple grey tee which suddenly made Diana feel overdressed.

"How may I help you?" She looked up and asked.

"I'm Diana Holt" Diana replied in a small voice and the lady sitting at the counter immediately nodded her head. Diana was expected, a girl from a big city, a topic of gossip no doubt. The lady dug through a stacked pile of documents on her desk till she found the ones she was looking for.

"This is your schedule and a map of the school." She said as she brought up several sheets to the counter to show Diana who quickly gathered them in her arms and headed out of the door. Students had started to arrive and now the empty parking lot had started filling. Diana started walking towards the main building, trying to memorize the map so that she wouldn’t have to walk around with it stuck in front of her nose all day.

As Diana reached the classroom she noticed that it was quite small. She took the slip; she was given in the office up to the teacher - a large, blonde woman whose desk had a nameplate identifying her as Mrs. Morrison who looked at the slip and then at Diana, smiling and asked her to sit anywhere she liked. Diana went and sat at an empty desk at the back hoping that her new classmates would find it hard to stare at her in the back. She kept her eyes down on the reading list that the teacher had given her. It was English – a subject that always caused boredom for Diana. So she sat at her seat, waiting for the horrible hour to get over, so that she could go to her next class which was French.

As soon as the bell rung, Diana was out of her chair and headed towards the door, eagerly trying to get out of the English class and rush to the next which was one of her favourite. Also, she didn’t want to be late for her next class cause that surely would have earned a lot of stares.

Everything was going perfectly fine which seemed a bit odd to Diana. Whenever she changed her school, which she did a lot, something or the other would happen with her on the first day and would end up making her day miserable but today nothing bad had happened which made Diana very suspicious. It was almost lunch time and till now a few people came to her and introduce themselves and asked her questions to which she just lied and fake smiled. The bell rang again indicating that lunch had started.

She made her way to her locker, quickly placed her books inside it and headed toward the cafeteria. It was pretty crowded; almost every bench was taken by different group of people. She quickly went to the line to grab something for lunch. From the looks of the food being served, she figured out that it would be best for her stomach if she would go with an apple. So she quickly took an apple, paid the money and walked out of the cafeteria, to the grounds of the school where some people were already sitting , enjoying the cool weather. Diana went to sit below a tree, in the corner, allowing peace to engulf her mind. It was very quiet there and she couldn’t help but enjoy the cool breeze that was blowing.

Diana opened her bag, took out her schedule and the map. Her next class was Mathematics, which she really enjoyed. She unfolded the map and searched for the route to her next class. As soon as she found the shortest route possible, Diana quickly stuffed everything in her bag, got up and headed towards her Mathematics class.

The bell has already rung and as Diana entered the class; it was almost full and much to her dismay, all the back seats were occupied. So Diana took a seat, somewhere in the middle of the classroom; a seat that would have gathered a lot of stares.

She took out her book and opened a random page, and pretended to focus on studying it. The teacher hadn’t arrived yet and the entire classroom was filled with noise of students shouting at one another, throwing papers and fighting.

Diana tried to ignore all the noise, which was causing a throbbing sensation in her head and focus on the book in front of her. Suddenly, she heard a loud shriek followed by a glass of water thrown at her.

“What the hell?” Diana shouted, as her anger managed to overcome her rational thinking. She got up from her seat, her eyes scanning the room, looking for the culprit.

“Well, well, well. The newbie has a temper and here I thought that she just knew how to be a quiet, shy, little girl.” A sharp girly voice came from Diana’s side. Diana whipped her head in the direction of the voice, to be greeted by a brunette with a pair of penetrating blue eyes, slender, thin body, wearing clothes like she was living in Phoenix rather than Silvercoast.

By this time, the class had gone incredibly quiet; everybody’s eyes on the two girls.

“What is your problem?” Diana asked, trying to calm herself. She didn’t want to make a huge issue out of it.

“You.” The girl replied.

“Me?” Diana asked confused.

“Don’t play so dumb. You pretty much know what I am talking about.”

“Look I have no idea what you are talking about. I don’t even know your name.”

“Amanda Parker.”

“Still clueless.” Diana said, trying to figure out what is her problem. Diana have never seen Amanda or even heard her name and there Amanda was accusing her for God knows what.

“What were you doing yesterday in the evening?” Amanda asked.

“I had gone out for a little trip to the bakery.”

“And mind telling whom you were with?” Amanda asked, making Diana pause for a second. The only person that had been with her was Harry.

“Umm.. A guy..” Diana replied.

“His name?”

“Harry.” Diana said earning a lot of gasps from the people surrounding them.

“Exactly!! Now I guess you get it.” Amanda said and Diana just shook her head, still not figuring out what Amanda’s problem was if she walked a few minutes with a guy.

“I guess you really are stupid.” Amanda said as she stated waking towards Diana.

“You see, Harry is my boyfriend and no one… No one dares to come closer to him. Do you get it?” Amanda said as she came face to face with Diana. Diana just stood there staring at Amanda dumbfounded.

“I said do you understand?” Amanda repeated finally making Diana snap back to reality.

“Look I have no interest in Harry and yesterday he was the one who insisted to come with me, not the other way around. So, yeah, if you want to scream and shout at someone, then that should be Harry.” Diana spoke. Amanda stood there staring at Diana before finally bursting into laughter.

“Yo-you t-think that my boyfriend wanted t-to hang out with you? You have got t-to kidding me.” Amanda said in between of her laugh and Diana found herself incapable to reply.

“I know that you are rich and all but sweetheart money doesn’t buy you good looks like mine and that is why Harry will never ever come after you. So, why don’t you just stay away from him and mind you own business?” Amanda spoke and before Diana could reply, the teacher entered the classroom.

“Good morn- What is going on here?” The teacher asked as he saw the crown surrounding the two girls.

“Nothing Mr. Mason. I mistakenly spilled water on Diana and I was just apologizing to her.” Amanda replied sweetly and Diana couldn’t help but stare at her dumbfounded. One second ago, Amanda was yelling at her and the next she became all sweet and innocent. The thing that surprised Diana the most was that no one objected; everyone just went to their seats.

“You are the new student, right?” Mr. Mason asked and Diana just nodded her head.

“I think you should clean up.” Mr. Mason spoke. “Someone please take her to the girl’s washroom.” A blonde stood up from her seat, gently placed her hand on Diana’s shoulder and took her out of the room.

“I am sorry.” The girl mumbled as soon as they got out of the class. “Amanda is a bitch when it comes to Harry.”

“It’s not your fault. So please don’t apologise.” Diana spoke.

“I feel guilty for not supporting you.” The girl replied. “I am Jane.”

“Nice to meet you, Jane.” Diana said.

“Here is the washroom.” Jane said indicating towards the door of the girl’s washroom.

“Yeah, thanks.” Diana mumbled.

“I will wait for you here.” Jane spoke but Diana shook her head.

“It’s alright. You should go.” Diana spoke.

“Are you sure?” Jane asked and Diana nodded.

“Okay. I will see you soon.” Jane said.

“Okay. Bye.” Diana said as she opened the door.

“Bye.” Jane spoke.

Diana let out a huge sigh as she stood in front of the mirror, her hands resting on the sink, trying to digest everything that has happened just a few minutes ago. She never wanted to be in any kind of fights because that usually gathers a lot of attention but here on the first day of school, she was accused of trying to steal someone’s boyfriend; a guy she barely knows. She had a strong gut feeling that something would happen but something like that was totally out of her imagination. She felt tears in the corner of her eyes, making her vision blurry, threatening to spill. She turned on the tap, quickly splashed water on the face and wiped it. She looked at the mirror and her reflection showed a girl with sorrow filled eyes and red nose. Her hair had started to dry. She shook her head, trying to calm herself and took a deep breath as she walked out of the door. She didn’t want to have a fight with Amanda again and there was only one way to make that possible; by not talking to Harry.

So she decided that she will never even look at Harry’s face, forget about talking to him.

The rest of the day passed in a blur. Diana mostly kept her head down and wore her beanie and glasses trying to avoid all the stares. What had happened in Mathematics had gone out and by the end of the day, almost everyone knew about it. The news spread like a forest fire.

The last bell had rung and Diana was standing in front of her locker, trying to find her History book from the mess that her locker had already become. She always managed to make a mess no matter how hard she would try to keep things clean.

“Hey.” A voice came from behind Diana making her quickly turn around. She was greeted by Harry with a grin on his face. Diana was very much tempted to slap that grin off his face but instead she turned around, slammed her locker and started walking towards her car, totally ignoring Harry.

“Diana, wait!!” Harry shouted as he followed her but Diana just increased her pace. She had almost reached her car but before she could open the door, she was turned around, pinned against her car by Harry who was holding her shoulders in a tight grip.

“Let me go.” Diana hissed and looked around to see if anyone was watching them and luckily no one was, since her car was parked at the very end.

“Not until you tell me what is wrong. Why are you ignoring me?” Harry demanded angrily.

“There is nothing wrong. Just let me go.” Diana spoke, trying to pry Harry’s hands from her shoulder but failing miserably since he was too strong.

“Don’t lie to me Diana. I know something is wrong. So, just tell me.” Harry said.

“Diana?” A voice called from behind Harry. He turned his head and watched Jane walking towards them.

“Not now, Jane.” Harry hissed, totally irritated by the interruption whereas Diana was begging Jane to help her.

“No. What are you doing here Harry?” Jane inquired.

“None of your business. I am talking to Diana right now.” Harry replied.

“Then why does it seems to me that you are forcing her to talk to you even when she is not interested?”

“Just go away, Jane.” Harry spoke.

“Not until you let Diana go.”Jane replied causing Harry to loosen his grip on Diana’s shoulder and take a step back.

“Diana, please tell me what is wrong. What did I do?” Harry begged and looked so vulnerable that for a moment Diana was tempted to hug him but instead she opened her car’s door and climbed in. She rolled down the window, mouthed a ‘thank you’ to Jane and drove away, without giving Harry a single glance. Harry was pretty much tempted to follow Diana but her figured out that Jane knew what was troubling Diana.

“Jane please tell me what is wrong with her?” Harry pleaded.

“Why are you so interested in what is troubling her.” Jane questioned.

“Jane please just answer me.” Harry said and Jane let out a huge sigh.

“Why don’t you ask you girlfriend, Amanda?” Jane scoffed and turned around.

“She is not my girlfriend.” Harry spoke.

“But she is claiming you to be her boyfriend, Harry. So, either she is lying or you are.” Jane said.

“But what she did to Diana?” Harry asked.

“She accused Diana trying to steal her boyfriend and according to Amanda, her boyfriend is you.” Jane said as she walked away leaving Harry dumbfounded and confused.
