Diana

Chapter 2

Diana had been walking for last one hour and all she could see was trees, trees and more trees. There were a few houses here and there; none of them too close with each other. They was quite amount of land, mostly covered with wild grass and trees. Diana did meet some people on her way and most of them stared at her like she was an alien, maybe because she as new.

Just when Diana decided to head back home, she saw a cliff but that was not what stopped her dead on her tracks. There was a boy standing at the cliff and to Diana it seemed that he was planning to jump off the cliff. Without wasting any time, Diana ran towards the boy.

“Hey!!! You... HEY!!!” Diana yelled but the boy didn’t even notice, he was too busy looking down the cliff. Diana ran faster when she saw the boy taking one more step which brought him to the edge of the cliff.

As soon as Diana reached to the boy, she pulled him back from the edge of the cliff. The boy turned around to look who pulled him and was greeted by the green eyes exactly like his. He was confused as he had never seen Diana before but before he could even spill out a single word, he felt a sharp pain on his cheek.

Diana had slapped him.

She was beyond angry. She hated... absolutely loathed the fact that people try to kill themselves. Everyone has to face problems and sometimes the easiest way to get rid of them seems to end your life but Diana wasn’t like that. Throughout her life she has been treated with a cold shoulder but she never tried to end her life. Sometimes the idea of killing herself seemed tempting but she fought it. She wanted to prove to life that no matter what it throws at her, she would fight it... Stay strong and never, ever give up.

“What the hell?” The boy shrieked as his hand flew to his cheek which was now throbbing with pain.

“I should be the one asking that question.” Diana replied angrily and tried to control her urge to slap him again.

“What? You were the one who came out of nowhere, robbed me out of my peace and slapped me... so hard...”

“That is what you get if you try to kill yourself!! There are people out there who care for you... Love you. So the least you can do is to think what it will do to them if you kill yourself an-“

“Hold on!!! Kill myself?? What are you talking about?”

“Weren’t you trying to kill yourself?” Diana asked in confusion and the boy shook his head indicating a no.

“What the hell were you doing over here.... uh...umm... Whatever your name is.” Diana asked.

“I was having a quiet, peaceful time until you came and ruined it and I am Harry.” The boy replied with a small smirk on his face as he saw Diana’s cheek getting red due to embarrassment.

“I am sorry.” Diana mumbled, totally ashamed of her behaviour.

“It’s alright.” Harry spoke and Diana gave a quick nod and turned around to leave. She had already embarrassed herself more than necessary.

“Wait.” Harry spoke making Diana stop and turn around with a totally confused face. Harry wanted to know her name. She was beautiful; her hair was raven-black, it flowed in waves to adorn her glowing, ivory skin. Her eyes, framed by long lashes, were emerald-green. A straight nose, full lips - she seemed the picture of perfection. Had she smiled, the world would sigh with contentment. Had she laughed, the world would laugh with her. And had she wept, the whole world would want to comfort her and somehow he had an urge to comfort her. Looking at her eyes he could feel a very familiar pain; the pain that he has been feeling since he had lost Alison.

“It was nice meeting you.” Harry said with a small smile as he brought up his hand for Diana to shake.

Diana brought her hand up but suddenly dropped it. She just realised that he was a stranger, someone who doesn’t know her name and she has absolutely nothing to do with him. But for once, Diana felt different. She talked to Harry... something she never does with someone whom she doesn’t know. For once, Diana felt that her walls went down but she can’t let that happen. She doesn’t need anyone. She is just fine the way she is even if she is alone. So she gave Harry a small fake smile as she watched him awkwardly move his hand and put it in his jacket. They were surrounded by silence, only the whooshing of wind and the sound of waves clashing the rocks was to be heard and for the first time in her life, Diana found the silence uncomfortable. She looked up and saw Harry’s eyes pinned on her face.

Harry was trying to figure out where he had seen her. He was sure of the fact that he had seen her somewhere but finding out where was the hard part. He had never met her yet her face looked very familiar.

“I should be heading home.” Diana said feeling very uncomfortable standing there, under Harry’s gaze.

“You are not from here.” Harry asked but to Diana it seemed more like a statement.

“I have recently shifted here.” Diana mumbled, not wanting to disclose too much about her family.

“Where are you fr-“ Harry began to ask but Diana spoke before he could complete his sentence.

“I really should be heading home. It’s getting late.” Diana spoke, trying to quickly get away from Harry because now he had started asking questions and soon it will become impossible for her to dodge his questions.

“Yeah, you are right. So, umm... Where are you headed to?” Harry asked.

“There.” Diana said pointing towards the direction of her house.

“I will accompany you. You might get lost.”

“Its fine, Harry and I have to go to the bakery first. So, I can go on my own.”

“Even I have to go to the bakery, so, it’s not a problem.” Harry insisted.

Diana sighed, not know how to make Harry understand that she didn’t want his company, that she liked to remain alone but it was also getting dark and she might get lost. Diana was so lost in weight her options that she didn’t even realise that Harry had walked past her towards the direction she pointed at.

“You coming?” Diana was shocked to hear Harry’s voice from the opposite direction but she neglected it and started walking towards him. They walked in silence towards the bakery. Harry played with stone, kicking it again and again whereas Diana kept looking at the ground.

“Are you always this quiet?” Harry finally asked, breaking the silence that surrounded them.

Diana glanced at him not knowing what to say. This might be the first time when she noticed how good-looking he was. His mop of brown curls sat on his head, dishevelled, some hanging across his face, hiding his vibrant green eyes. His perfect square nose sitting on his face with cheek bones high and sharp and square jaw. His lips pink and plum with a smile that could light up a planet and dimples deeper then the deepest seas. His fair skin that made his lips seem pinker somehow. His beauty was unreal to the point where it should have been illegal.

“Yes.... I m-mean no... I...” She stuttered and she started feeling awkward and stupid as soon as she heard Harry laugh.

“So, ummm.. . what brings you here?” Harry asked her after sometime.

Suddenly she became more uncomfortable in his presence, not at all wanting to share any of her personal history with him.

“Some family reasons.” She said not wanting to disclose anything.

“Oh!” He shrugged.

“The bakery is here.” Harry said as he pointed towards the bakery. They both entered and were greeted by warm air and Diana gladly took out her hands which were cold and rubbed them.

“Harry!! It's so nice to see you and who is this beautiful girl with you?” The women sitting at the reception asked.

“This is um.... “ Harry trailed off. He had no clue about the girl with whom he has been walking for the past half an hour.

“Diana.” Diana spoke and Harry just blushed in embarrassment.

“Oh!! Jenna’s niece, right?” The lady asked and Diana nodded wondering how she knew her but then again this was a small town. So, everyone might have a clue about who she is.

“So what bring you here?” The lady asked with a small smile.

“I need two packets of bun.” Diana spoke to the lady.

“And you Harry?” The lady asked.

“Nothing, I just came here to accompany Diana.” Harry replied with a small smile to the lady and then turned his head to look at Diana who was glaring at him.

“What?” Harry asked and Diana just shook her head.

“There you go kid.” The lady handed a packet to Diana and she handed the bill to the lady. Diana took the packet and quickly walked out of the bakery.

“Diana, wait!!!” Harry called out as he opened came out of the bakery but Diana just kept walking without giving him a single glance. Harry cursed under his breath and jogged towards Diana. As soon as he reached her, he grabbed her hand and turned her around to face him.

“I am sorry.” Harry apologised.

“You lied.” Diana accused.

“You wouldn’t have let me come with you."

"Why did you want to accompany me?"

"Because I... I... I didn't want you to get lost. Please Diana, I am sorry.” Harry spoke and Diana sighed.

“Fine.” Diana said.

“Umm... Harry, you can let go of my arm now.” Diana spoke and Harry quickly released her hand. Diana started walking towards her house.

“Where are you going?” Harry asked as her walked beside her.

“To my house.”

“You know, I live just opposite to you.”

“Great?” Diana spoke but it seemed more like a question.

“Yeah.” Harry sighed. Talking to Diana has been the most difficult part. She just gives him the answers of whatever he asks and nothing else. He wasn’t able to figure out what type of girl Diana was.

Soon they reached their block and Diana let out a huge breathe of relief. She was finally home where she can just sit at a corner and be alone. It wasn’t that she didn’t enjoy Harry’s company but she preferred to be alone.

“So, I will see you tomorrow?” Harry asked.

“I guess so.”

“Diana it seems that you have made some friends.” Jenna said as she walked out of the house. “How are you Harry?”

“I am fine Jenna. How are you?”

“Healthy as a horse.” Jenna replied with a grin.

“Great!! So... umm....Goodnight, Diana. Goodnight Jenna.” Harry said with a smile.

“Goodnight Harry.” Diana and Jenna replied together. Harry gave them a nod and then turned around to walk towards his house.

“We should go in, kiddo. It’s getting cold out here.” Jenna said as she patted Diana on the back and walked inside. She followed Jenna but stopped before entering her house. Diana turned around to see if Harry had gone inside but she was greeted by Harry standing at his door, staring at her. He waved when he saw that she was looking at him and Diana gave back a small wave before quickly entering the house.

“Mum!!! I am home.” Harry yelled as he entered his house.

“Shhhhh.” He heard Gemma’s voice who was sitting on the sofa carefully watching something on T.V. Harry just shook his head and walked towards the kitchen where his mother was preparing the dinner.

“How was your day Harry?” Harry’s mother, Anne asked.

“It was interesting.” Harry replied as he sat on one of the chairs of the dining table.

“So, Jenna has a niece living with her... huh?” He asked curious to know more about Diana.

“Yeah, she just shifted today. I guess her name is Daphene.” Anne said.

“Her name is Diana.” Harry replied. “I met her today while coming back. She seemed different.. I mean she was pretty quite; something I thought would be impossible for anyone belonging to Jenna’s family.”

“Harry.” Anne scolded.

“What? Have you seen Jenna? She just keeps on talking and talking and talking but Diana, she just remains quite. I mean how can they both live under the same roof?” Harry asked.

“Jenna said that Diana shifted here because her parents were busy all the time or something and she didn’t want Diana to stay alone or something like that.”

“Stupid excuse. How can parents not find time for their own children?” Harry said picking up the newspaper. He stopped as soon as he saw the front page. There was a photograph of Diana and her parents. The article was about Diana leaving her family in London and moving to a small town with her aunt. Now Harry realised that this was where he had seen Diana before. She belonged to the Holt family; one of the richest people in the world.

Maybe Jenna wasn't lying...

Maybe Diana's quietness has to do something with her family..
