Diana

Chapter 1

Diana stared out of the window, watching the rain hit the road hard and fast, droplets sliding across the smooth surface of the glass window. She sighed and gently rested her forehead against the cool surface of the window, silently watching huge farms passing by as their car sped across the countryside. To anyone else it would seem that she was enjoying the scenery but Diana was just physically present there as she let her mind wander far away.

Diana belonged from an elite family and her family had a high reputation in the society of being perfect, so, since her childhood Diana was expected to be flawless and perfect. She had everything a girl could wish for yet she felt incomplete, maybe because she was never loved like a daughter. Her parents were always busy at work and Diana had eventually grown habitual to have her dinner alone in her room. She never understood what it felt like to be loved. For Diana, the feeling of love was an alien language but she would feel a slight pain in her chest every time she would witness a father carrying his daughter on his shoulder, laughing at some joke or a mother taking her daughter on ashopping trip. Diana always tries so hard to be perfect for her parents’ sake. She always topped her class, never did drugs, hadn’t even touched any bottle of wine and yet she never got even a single word of appreciation.

Gradually, Diana had grown frustrated and tired by trying so hard to get a single word of appreciation but always having a cold shoulder to greet her that she finally decided to move out of her parents’ house. She had a slight hope that they would stop her, apologise for being so cold but instead her parents agreed with her decision and let her move out. She used to receive a check of huge amount, every month at her doorstep. She had managed to spend around six months on her own and had mentally prepared herself to spend her entire life alone but her aunt, Jenna, stepped in and asked Diana’s mother to let Diana live with her. Jenna had always been like a mother to Diana but when Jenna proposed to take Diana with her, Diana was a bit reluctant. She didn’t want to leave herlife in London even though it wasn’t much of a life. But still, Diana loved London. She loved the vigorous, sprawling city where no one cared about what others were doing but Jenna said that she had gotten sick of seeing Diana living her life like a corpse. So, Jenna had dragged Diana along with her, giving Diana absolutely no choice but to agree to go.

Jenna never loved the city life, so she used to live in a small town situated in the northwest of London, about a hundred kilometers away, named Silvercoast. This existed under a constant cover of clouds. It rained on this town more than any other place in the Britain. It was this town where Diana was headed along with her aunt. Jenna had been fairly excited about the whole thing. She seemed genuinely pleased that Diana was coming to live with her. Jenna had already gotten Diana registered for high school.

Diana, on the other hand, was glad that she got to live with Jenna but Diana never loved the life of a small town because they had a very small population where probably everyone had their nose poked in others business. Diana was never the one to mix with other people. She wasn’t shy but she liked to keep everything to herself and she had no idea how she was going to survive in Silvercoast.

“Diana, wake up, we are here.” Jenna spoke as she gently shook Diana, who had fallen asleep during the ride.

Diana quickly sat, rubbed her eyes and stepped out of the car. She looked around and was welcomed by greenery. Everything was green; from the trees to their trunks which were covered with moss, branches hanging with a canopy of it and even the road was covered with ferns. The sky, covered with grey clouds threatening to bring a heavy downpour but Diana managed to notice one thing that even though SIlvercoast had a dull and gloomy weather, it somehow managed to looked beautiful.

She took a deep breath and walked around the car to help Jenna to unload the luggage. She took half of her luggage and walked carefully, trying not to slip on the wet road. As she reached the porch, she looked at the house. It was small, painted in white with a little garden in the front.

“Your room is upstairs, the first one on the left.” Jenna said as she picked up the remaining luggage. Diana gave her a nod and turned around to open the door.

She was greeted by a long corridor that probably lead to the kitchen or the living room and staircase in the side. She quickly walked upstairs and opened the door of the room that Jenna said was hers. It was the west bedroom that faced out over the front yard. It had wooden floor, white coloured walls, peaked ceiling and violet lace curtains around the window. There was a desk in the corner along with a chair, a queen sized bed in the middle of the room, a small wardrobe with a mirror and an attached bathroom for which Diana was really grateful as she wouldn’t have to share it with Jenna. The room was small, sophisticated and absolutely perfect for Diana. She turned around to see Jenna standing at her doorway, carefully watching Diana.

“The room is beautiful. Thank you, Jenna” Diana spoke as she turned around to look at the room once more.

“It’s not a problem. Decorating this room was a piece of cake” Jenna replied back with a gentle smile.

“I mean for everything. Thank you for bringing me here. It feels a lot like a home rather than a house.” Diana frankly spoke as she quickly walked towards Jenna to give her a hug.

“I knew you were suffering over there, Diana. You wouldn’t show it but you were. It was clearly written on your face and it was painful for me to watch you live like that. So, I thought maybe a bit of change in the scenery and people would be nice.” Jenna said as she gently patted Diana’s back. Diana gave a quick nod and broke away from the hug.

“Diana, I am making a coffee. Would you like one?” Jenna asked as started walking out of the room.

“Yes. I will be down in a minute.” Diana replied as Jenna left the room.

One of the best things about Jenna was the she didn't hover. She had left Diana alone to unpack and get settled. For Diana, it was nice to be alone, not to have to smile and pretend to be happy. She felt relieved to stare dejectedly out the window at the rain and be herself . Diana walked around the room and stood in front of the mirror, staring back at her reflection. There stood in front of her a girl with tan skin, green eyes, black hair and a thin, slender body. Diana had always wanted to have an athletic body but instead she was stuck with her soft-slender frame. She brought her hand to her tangled, damped hair and tried to brush them with her fingers but failed.

Diana sighed as she gave up and turned around, picked up her bags, kept them on the bed and started searching for her bathroom necessities and a pair of clothes. She went to the bathroom to clean herself up after the day of travel. Diana quickly washed her face, brushed her teeth, changed into comfortable clothed and headed back to her room. She decided to go down and then later sort out all her clothes. So, she switched of the light of her room and went downstairs to the kitchen.

The kitchen was pretty much like the entire house. It had wooden floor and cabinets, light blue paint on the walls, a small window which showed the greenery outside, a fridge kept in one corner, a small dining table in the middle and a small fireplace in the corner. It was simple and this simplicity of Jenna’s always drew Diana towards her. If Jenna wanted, she could have lived in a huge city and have a huge mansion instead she chose to live in a small town. Jenna was nothing like Diana’s mother. She was young, about twenty seven years old, had golden brown hair and brown eyes while Diana’s mother had green eyes and black hair which were inherited by Diana.

Diana silently sat on one of the chair at the dining table and stared out of the window at the greenery. She wasn’t much of a speaker and only spoke when she was asked something. She preferred to keep quiet and alone as it gives her more time to think.

“There you go.” Jenna said as she handed Diana a cup of coffee. Diana took a sip and moaned in pleasure. Jenna had always been the best cook in the entire family.

“It is absolutely amazing.” Diana complimented Jenna who gave back a smile. Jenna sat in one of the chair as she kept her mug of coffee on the table.

“Your school is going to start from tomorrow. So, do you want anything, Diana?” Jenna asked which made Diana shake her head indicating a no and let the silence surround them.

“Why don’t you go out? Have a walk and enjoy the scenery. You might even make a few friends.” Jenna said excitedly.

“Sure.” Diana replied. Even though she didn’t want to but she couldn’t say no to Jenna who had been absolutely nice to her. Jenna had tried her best to make Diana feel comfortable and Diana appreciated it.

“Ok. Go and get ready while I prepare for the dinner.” Jenna said as she got up from her chair.

“Ummm… Do you need help?” Diana asked, hoping that she would get to dodge the exploring of town.

“Nah, I will prepare it in no time. You go on and explore.” Jenna said as she walked out of the kitchen to her room.

Diana sighed loudly as she saw no way of escaping from going out. She slowly got up, kept her mug in the sink and headed towards her room. She quickly changed her clothesand walked toward Jenna’s room.

“Jenna, I am leaving. Do you need anything?” She asked as she knocked the door. Jenna quickly opened the door.

“Can you buy some buns on your way back? There is a small bakery about two blocks away.” Jenna spoke and Diana nodded her head. Jenna quickly handed Diana some money.

“Bye.” Diana spoke as she headed out.

“Bye and take your time to explore the town.” Jenna yelled from the kitchen.

Diana walked out of the door and was instantly greeted by a cool breeze blowing on her face making her shiver and hold her jacket more tightly around her. She looked at the sky and again her eyes met the same grey clouds like before. She felt trapped in a cage. Luckily, it had stopped raining but the road had become quite slippery since it had rained throughout the morning. Diana walked slowly, carefully taking each step as she was afraid that she would fall and her clumsiness would definitely make it easier.
