Just a Fool

Chapter 12: Mine

At first Harry wanted to take Abigail to a fancy restaurant but during the ride he started to change his mind. He didn't want to be around a lot of people, plus the last thing he wanted to see were the judging stares he was used to getting almost every day of his life. This girl was too good for him, he knew that. He didn't need it proven to him with a few scowls from some strangers. Pulling up to an old 50's style diner he turned to her, “Are you ok with getting something to go?” He asked.

“Um sure,” She muttered. “Do I look that hideous?”

“No! No, its just...” Harry stammered, he wanted to slap himself.

“I know, its ok,” Abigail smiled. “Its weird for us to be seen together, I get it.”

“No, well I mean,” He sighed. “People always look at me...like I'm some kind of villain. I don't want you to get treated like that.”

Squeezing his hand that she still held in hers she told him, “Harry, stop, I don't care what anyone thinks of us. I want to spend time with you, nothing else matters.”

Those words were like music to his ears. All his worries and concerns seemed to melt away, something that always seemed to happy whenever he was with her. Nodding his head he opened his car door and when she stepped out he took her hand in his to lead into the diner. “I hope you like burgers.” He chuckled opening the door for her.

“Are you kidding? Cheeseburgers and fries are my meals of choice.” She laughed.

“So I take it you're not one of those girls who orders a salad to try and impress a guy?”

Shaking her head she sighed. “Nope, I figure if a guy judges me by what I order then he isn't my type of guy anyway.”

“Well this guy likes the way you think.” He chuckled, putting a hand on his chest. “Want a milkshake?”

“Yes please.” She smiled as they walked up to the counter.

After ordering two cheeseburgers, a large fry to split, and two milkshakes Harry pulled out his wallet hoping he had enough money to pay for the meal. So far he was doing a good job in impressing her, the last thing he needed was to make her have to pay for her food. Sighing in relief he paid the waitress behind the register. “Want to sit outside?” He asked.

When Abigail nodded her head he took the tray of food while she grabbed their shakes. Outside they sat on top of the diner's red tables. “So I've never even been here before, how did you know about it?” She questioned taking a sip of her milkshake.

“My sister used to bring me here during the summer. She would usually dare me to chug an entire root beer float which resulted in many brain freezes and me getting sick over there in-between those trees.” He explained.

“Oh my gosh,” She laughed. “I didn't know you had a sister.”

“Yeah, Gemma. She lives a few hours away with her son.” He sighed. “And now that you know something new about me, its your turn.”

“What do you want to know?”

“Anything you want to tell me.”

“Um,” She muttered, playing with her straw. “I was scared of you at first. Not because of how you look or what people said about you...because of my ex.”

“Angel, you don't have to talk about that.” He whispered, since he already knew about her past he didn't want to hear it again. He didn't want to see her the hurt in her eyes as she relived it all over again.

“No, no I need to.” She cringed but if she wanted an honest relationship with him she needed to let him in, all the way. Even if it was difficult to get the words out. “I was scared of you because you're treating me just like he did at first. In the beginning he was great, he would take me out on special dates. Treat me like I was some kind of royalty. Then...it changed. He
became someone else.”

Scooting closer to her Harry reached out to take her hand. “I thought I was in love, I thought he loved me.” She murmured. “Its like when he changed I changed. I became this vulnerable, fragile person that was terrified of her own shadow. I was scared of becoming that person again with you. The last thing I want is to feel that way again.”

Hesitantly Harry reached up to cup her face in his big hand. With his eyes staring straight into hers he spoke up. “I promise it won't be like that. I swear, I'm not him. I'm not perfect but I will damn sure try to be for you.”

Covering his hand with hers she smiled. “Harry, you don't have to be perfect. Just you being you has made me like you more than I've liked anyone.”

That made him grin. Leaning over he gently kissed her forehead before taking a bite out of his burger. They ate in silence, glancing over at one another in-between bites. When they were finished they walked over to the car hand in hand. Once inside Abigail turned to him.

“You know its your turn.”

“My turn for what?” He asked.

“Your turn to tell me something.”

“Right,” He mumbled, scratching the back of his neck. The fact that she was so honest with him made his heart flutter but he was afraid of sharing that same honesty. Sighing he gripped the steering wheel. “My dad left my mom a few years ago,” He started. “They were having this huge argument, I was in my room against the door listening the whole time. I heard something break, my mom crying, and then a door slam. Next thing I know my sister is coming in my room telling me his clothes were gone.”

Abigail frowned, she had never seen Harry look so upset. He was gripping the wheel so tight his knuckles were turning white. She wanted to reach out and touch him but she knew he needed to get his feelings out. “I was more pissed than I was sad. I mean, what kind of man leaves his wife and kids?” He snapped. “Well last year he was supposed to come help me fix my car. He had talked about it for weeks, telling me how excited he was and how he was looking forward to it. The day comes around and here I am waiting and waiting until finally I get a fucking voicemail telling me 'something came up.'” Running a hand through his hair he sighed. “That night I got in my first fight. I was pissed and I had been taking shots of whiskey and needed to get some aggression out.”

“I'm sorry, Harry.” She muttered.

Looking at her the sides of his mouth perked up. “Its not your fault, Angel,” He smiled. “If it wasn't for you I would still be that angry punk fighting idiots to make a quick buck.”

“You mean you aren't fighting anymore?”

“Nope, I was supposed to fight a guy tonight but I had better things to do.” He smirked making her blush.

“Well I'm glad, I would be a nervous wreck if that was still your hobby.”

Leaning closer to her he was surprised to see her doing the same. Over the console he waited for her to close the gap. When their lips finally connected he swore he saw fireworks and every other cliché first kiss stories he had ever heard. His lip ring was cool and slightly tickled her lip as her hands rested on his arms. Breaking the kiss he leaned his forehead on hers, still wanting to feel close to her. “You don't know how long I've wanted to do that.” He whispered making her smile.

“I'd be lying if I said I hadn't wanted it too.”

Giving her another quick kiss Harry leaned back in his seat. “As much as I want to sit in this parking lot for the rest of the night, I better get you home.”

Frowning she nodded, buckling her seatbelt. As Harry pulled out onto the main road he reached over to take her hand. He was over the moon and out of the corner of his eye he couldn't help but notice the small smile on Abigail's face. He wished the ride to her house was longer as they entered the familiar subdivision. When he stopped his car in her driveway they noticed another car already parked. “I guess my dad is home,” She noted.

Hopping out of the driver's seat he walked her to the front door. “Thank you for tonight, I had a great time.” She whispered, stepping closer to him.

“I'm glad...so does this make you mine?” He asked, resting his hands on her waist.

Biting her bottom lip she giggled. “Your what?”

Chuckled he bent down to kiss her cheek. “My girlfriend.”

Actually hearing the words made Abigail feel happier than she ever felt. “If you want me to be,” She muttered.

“I do.”

“Then I guess I am,” She smiled leaning up to give him a kiss. Now that she was able to kiss him she wanted to do it as much as she could.

Hearing a lock click they broke apart. They were both blushing as Abigail's dad opened the front door. “Abby? I thought I heard a car pull up. You're supposed to tell us if you're going to be out.”

“I know, I'm sorry, it was kind of a spur of the moment thing.” She explained.

With a stern look on his face Abigail's dad looked Harry up and down. “And who's this?”

“Uh dad, this is Harry, my...boyfriend.” She smiled stepping closer to Harry.

When he heard the word 'boyfriend' leave her mouth Harry couldn't help but grin. He beamed with pride at the title. “Nice to meet you, sir.” He said, holding out his hand to her father.

To Abigail's surprise her dad took his hand and smiled. “Likewise Harry, well since you two are...dating this calls for a family dinner.”

“Dad.” Abigail groaned.

“No, no, its ok.” Harry whispered. “That sounds good to me.”

“Great, its all settled. Now come on, honey, you have school tomorrow.”

“Ok, good night Harry.” Abigail muttered giving his hand a small squeeze before following her dad into the house.

As he walked to his car Harry couldn't help but feel a type of happiness he never thought he would be able to have. He had never really believed in love but now with Abigail he thought it was definitely possible. He felt like a new man. In his car the sweet smell of her perfume lingered as he drove home and he couldn't wait until he was with her again.
