Just a Fool

Chapter 11: Fresh Start

As soon as the final bell rang Harry was the first one out of his seat. He wanted to gather what he needed for tutoring and get to his car as fast as possible. Opening his locker he heard his friends call his name as they came towards him. “Hey mate, what are you doing after school?” Liam asked.

“Uh, going over to Abigail's house,” Harry said quickly grabbing his Literature book.

“Oh shit, already going over to her house?” Niall laughed, wiggling his eyebrows.

“No dickhead, its not like that,” Harry snapped. “She's tutoring me in Lit.”

“So you're not going to try and get in her pants?” Louis sounded shocked.

Out of the corner of his eye he noticed the girl their conversation had been about. “No, there she is, I'll see you guys later.” Leaving his friends he jogged towards her. “Angel!”

Abigail was smiling as he approached her, a sight that made him grin. “So I follow you to your house?”

“That works,” She nodded leading him out of the school.

In the parking lot Harry walked her to her car before hurrying over to his own. The whole ride to her house he felt anxious. He knew not to try anything with Abigail, but that didn't mean he didn't want to. She was beautiful and he genuinely enjoyed being around her. It was just the fear of her not feeling the same and getting stuck in the friend zone, something Harry never thought he would have to worry about with a girl. Driving through the picturesque subdivision he took a deep breath, it was a far cry from his small house out in the boonies. When he saw Abigail pull into the driveway of a huge brick house he sighed. “I wonder how her parents will feel about me in their picture perfect home,” He muttered out loud parking his car on the curb.

He followed Abigail through the front door in silence. The house was even bigger on the inside he noticed. Peaking into a room he saw a formal living room that looked like no one had set foot in. “Uh, that's kind of my mom's area.” He heard Abigail explain.

On the other side of the entryway he saw a more normal living room, with spacious couches and a big screen TV hanging on the wall above a fire place. He followed Abigail through the house to the kitchen. “We can work in here or in the living room, its your choice.” She told him as she opened the fridge to get two bottles of water.

“It doesn't matter to me,” He mumbled. Not wanting to have an awkward silence he spoke up. “So where are your parents?”

Pulling her books out of her bag she sighed. “Dad works a lot and my mom's been staying at the hospital with my grandpa almost every night.”

“How's he doing?”

Frowning, Abigail shook her head. “Not very good.” She answered taking her bottle and heading back down the hall to the living room.

'Shit,' Harry thought, this 'date' definitely wasn't going where he wanted it to. Sighing to himself he followed her. When he walked into the room he found her taking her books out of her bag. “Look, Angel, I'm sorry,” He said making her look up. “This can't be easy for you.”

“Harry, its fine,” She muttered scooting over to let him sit on the couch. “I mean, its not easy but its mostly about my parents. Its been harder on them.”

“What's going on?” He asked. “If you want to talk about it, that is.”

Turning to face him she took a deep breath. “Remember how I told you they're not here that much? Well my dad is hardly ever home, he runs a construction business and it keeps him out of town half the time. My mom is a real estate agent and usually she is here physically, but I can tell she's always somewhere else. She usually takes a glass of wine into her living room and stays there.”

“So you're alone a lot?”

“Yeah, but now that she's at the hospital dad has been trying to be here but I can tell he feels...out of place. He's used to being away so much being home is like a foreign thing to him. Now though its like he's given up, he's starting to revert back to his old routine.”

“I'm sorry.” He whispered scooting closer to her.

“Its not your fault.” She sighed, placing her hand on his arm.

Placing his larger hand on top of hers his green eyes met her blue ones. “Well if you ever need someone to keep you company I'm just a call away.”

“Thanks Harry, I appreciate it,” She giggled. “Ok so what do you need help on?”

An hour later Harry had learned more from Abigail about Shakespeare than he had in class. The way she explained the plays made it easier for him to understand and for once he was actually starting to enjoy his homework. “So Lady Macbeth was actually just a crazy bitch who wanted power?” He questioned.

“Pretty much, but then the guilt starts to eat away at her. After the murders she needs a light at all times because the crimes were committed in the dark, it haunts her.”

“And she keeps washing her hands to get rid of the blood?”

“Yeah, but it'll never go away, the guilt consumes her until she eventually commits suicide.”

“Damn, Shakespeare sure liked killing people in this play, huh?” Harry chuckled.

“Well it just goes to show you'll do anything to achieve power,” Abigail explained. “But I think that's it for today.”

“Great, so now what?”

“Uh, we could go get something to eat? Its almost five thirty.”

“Sure, I'll drive.”

While Abigail excused herself to the restroom Harry sat in the living room with a smile on his face. He knew the perfect place to take her. Sure, he wasn't the 'dating' type but that didn't mean he didn't know how. His plan was to lay on the charm and finally take the next step with her. He could tell she was ready, with the way she talked to him and how their conversations went. It might not have been easy but he could tell whatever they will have will be worth the wait.

Standing up to grab his keys he felt his phone vibrate in his pocket. He almost cursed out loud, all he could think was one of his friends was trying to cock block him. Pulling it out he was surprised to see Craig's name on the screen. “What is it?” He asked, his voice on edge.

“Man, you got a big one tonight. A guy from Ridgeland is coming in and its going to be a lot of money.”

“Craig, I can't.” Harry muttered, he kept his eyes on the stairs just in case Abigail came back.

“What? Styles you gotta be kidding me, this one can pay for half of your college tuition.”

“I can't, get someone else to do it.” Harry snapped, hanging his phone up.

Sighing he pushed his phone back in his pocket. If it had been a month earlier Harry would have jumped at the chance but now he felt different. Sure, the money was tempting but now he knew there was more to life than money. For once he felt happy and he wanted to keep it that way. “You ready?” He heard Abigail say as she came down the stairs.

“Yeah, lets go.” He said opening the door for her. 'Ok Styles, time to be the perfect gentleman.' He thought, walking her to the car.

Once he opened the passenger door for her he heard her giggle. “Harry I had no idea you were so chivalrous.”

“There's a lot you don't know about me,” He told her, closing the door. Hurrying over to the driver's side he smiled. “And tonight I'm going to show you a good time.”

“You're not taking me to another fight are you?”

Laughing he started the car. “No, not that kind of good time. Even though I thought you had fun that night.”

“Well...maybe a little, but seeing you get hit wasn't very fun.”

“Are you trying to say you care about me Angel?”

Biting her bottom lip she hoped she wasn't blushing too much. “Maybe a little.”

Placing a hand over his heart he grinned. “Aw Angel, I'm touched, I thought I was just your partner in Home Ec.”

She opened her mouth to say something but closed it again when she didn't know how to say what she was thinking. In reality Harry hadn't just been her Home Ec partner in a long time. Ever since that night in the back of the truck he had become more, she was just afraid. Now, she still had a few fears but being with Harry made her forget about her past relationship. It was like he was giving her a fresh start, something she was grateful for. “So where are you taking me?” She asked.

“You'll see,” He smirked.

They fell in a comfortable silence until Harry's phone started ringing. “Shit.” He muttered pulling it out of his pocket.

Abigail watched him take one look at his phone before he hit ignore. Throwing the phone in the cup-holder he kept his eyes on the road, his jaw and fist clenched. “Everything ok?” She asked.

“Yeah,” He sighed, his eyes still straight forward.

His sudden change in mood worried her. She could almost see the gears in head turning and from what she had learned about Harry she knew he wouldn't just open up and talk about his problems. Biting her bottom lip Abigail hesitantly took his right hand off the wheel and held it in both of hers. With just a simple touch his mood seemed to lighten and he gripped her hand tighter.

To say Harry was shocked was an understatement. For one she initiated holding his hand and how once again she calmed his anger. When Craig called him again he knew what he was going to say, they had an agreement ever since he started fighting for him. If Harry didn't fight he wouldn't be fighting again, no more fights meant no more money to help pay the bills. He was angry, it had been the first fight he turned down, but he had given his word. Harry was also worried, if he wasn't fighting what was he going to do? He needed to figure it all out but at the moment all he cared about was the girl holding his hand.
