The Start of Something Beautiful

Too Soon

It was almost 3AM, the house was completely quiet. Taylor laid awake in bed, unable to sleep with the thought of what would be happening in only seven hours. She looked at the suitcases that were packed and ready to be shipped off, feeling the sting of unshed tears. Harry slept beside her, arms securing the tiny baby girl on his chest. Harry had begged Taylor that night to let Darcy sleep with them on his last night at home and she couldn’t deny him that. Since the moment the two laid down to sleep, neither of them budged, both peacefully content. Her chubby cheek was smushed against the skin of his chest, her pink lips parted slightly as she breathed deeply. At only six weeks old Darcy was oblivious to what that morning was and how much it would affect her mother.
Taylor had yet to fall asleep, constantly thinking about later that morning, wishing it would never come. Her heart ached at the thought of him leaving not just her, but their daughter now too. She hadn’t expected this day to come so soon or at all, she thought they’d always be together, living like a normal family doing normal family things like barbecues, dinner parties, family outings, and just days where it was just the three of them doing absolutely nothing but still enjoying it because they were together. As much as she wanted all of those things to come true, she knew they couldn’t. Harry’s career tore him away from home and Taylor could only take so much going back and forth on her own, but now that they had Darcy, she didn’t want Darcy to grow up only seeing her father a few times every few months while he was on the road.
Her green eyes flickered back over to the loves of her life, smiling sadly at how Harry clung to Darcy like she was going to disappear. She scooted closer to her sleeping husband, his mouth slightly agape, soft snores leaving from between the same pink lips Darcy had inherited. She took in his features, making sure to appreciate every freckle, every crevice, every pore, and everything about him as he slept. She always found herself doing this the night before he left, making sure she remembered every little detail about him, mentally taking a picture.
The pads of her fingertips ghosted over Darcy’s soft cheek, a few snuffles being released from the infant at her mother’s soft touch. It would just be the two of them for a while, just she and her baby girl. She knew she could take care of Darcy on her own, but she didn’t want to. Taylor didn’t want Harry to miss a second of Darcy’s life, she wanted him to be there for everything, she wanted to bask in the sweet moments with Darcy with Harry. She didn’t want him to go anywhere.
She started feeling realizing what she was asking for and what she was wanting but quickly shook it off knowing that she shouldn’t feel any remorse for what she wanted. Harry was her husband and the father of her child, she had the right to want him to stay home. She had the right to be upset about it all. She had the right to cry when he kissed her goodbye in the airport. She had the right to never want to let him go.
*
The car ride to the airport was silent, Harry holding Taylor’s hand over the console in between them as he drove. Gentle kisses were peppered to her knuckles every few minutes or so, his way of silently reassuring her that he would be back in no time.
That morning had been tough for Taylor, waking up Harry as sobs took over her entirety. She watched him get ready with tear-filled eyes wishing silently that he would change his mind and stay, but knowing he couldn’t.
Darcy slept serenely in her carrier, Harry checking in the mirror constantly to make sure she was okay. Taylor couldn’t help the tears that were stinging her eyes once again, knowing that this would be the last car ride with the three of them for a while. Harry’s eyes flickered over to his wife. His heart ached to see her so upset, he wanted to stay home with his girls more than anything but he knew as the provider of the family, he couldn’t.
*
The young family sat in the terminal, waiting on Harry’s flight to be called. Darcy was now fast asleep against his chest, her tiny hand fisting his shirt, clinging to her father. Harry clung to her, not wanting to let her go. He had just met her six weeks ago and now he was leaving her, it broke his heart.
His free hand was resting on his wife’s knee as her arms were wrapped around his. Her tears had finally subsided, trying to put on a brave front for her husband as much as it pained her to do so.
“Flight 743 to Venice, now boarding.”
Taylor’s heart sank, it was really happening, he was leaving. Unshed tears stung her eyes as they stood, Harry pressing a kiss to Darcy’s head, his own tears falling down his face as he looked at her one last time. The sight making the floodgates open for Taylor. She had never been so emotional when saying goodbye to Harry, sure, there were a few tears here and there, but there was never the sobs that were shaking her body now. She didn’t even care about the ever-curious paparazzi that were scattered throughout the airport, she was upset.
“Baby, please don’t cry.” Harry begged, pain written in his voice. His free arm pulled her close, his face nuzzling into her hair, his own tears falling onto the skin of her neck. “Please don’t make this harder than it already is.”
She sniffled, wrapping her arms tightly around him, resting her forehead on his chest as she continued to sob. “It’s too soon.”
He held her tighter, pressing kisses to her hair, his heart breaking further at every sob she released.
“Last call for flight 743 to Venice.”
“Hey, look at me.” Harry spoke in a soft but demanding voice as he placed a finger under Taylor’s chin, tilting her face up to look at him, his heart clenching at her sad face. “I will be back before you know it and we will be a family again. I love you so, so, so much Taylor.”
Her chin quivered as she pulled him in for a passionate kiss, their lips molding together perfectly, like puzzle pieces, reveling in the feeling of his lips, wanting to stay like that forever. They broke and Harry pressed one last kiss to her salty lips and one to Darcy’s hair, holding her a little tighter to his chest before handing her over to Taylor carefully.
“I love you two so much, I’ll call you when I land.”
And with that, he walked through the gates, looking back at the two girls that held his heart, fighting the urge to run back to them and take them in his arms. Instead, he mouthed one last, “I love you.”

Notes

This is by far the saddest thing I have ever written. I could practically see this all happening one day if this all came true, I had to pause a few times to keep myself from crying. I’m very emotional tonight!
Thank you for all the kind words thus far, they are truly appreciated.
Also, I would love to know what you guys think about the series so far, what you like, love, dislike, hate, etc. Leave it all in a comment!
