When you Smile
Harry: I would be lying.
“And where are you headed mister?” I looked up mid text to see a frumpy looking Louis coming out of the hallways. “Morning… or I should say afternoon. I’m meeting Caroline for coffee.” I didn’t bother watching his face fall into disapproval so I finished up my text message and sent it.
I slipped into my vans and grabbed my keys. “Bye mate.” All I heard were mumbled words. I stepped out into the hallway of the apartment complex I lived at and began to venture down towards the hallways.
Midway my phone went off and I tended to my response. Bad idea. “Shit” an unfamiliar and foreign voice had chimed in. Looking at the ground food was scattered all over the carpet.
“Shit is right I mumbled,” as I looked up I came face to face with the person I had collided with. Her voice began to move but I couldn’t hear anything come out, her lips moved but I wasn’t home.
I watched her eyes furrow a bit, “pardon. I’m sorry.” Bringing myself back to the real world, my phone went off again, as this beautiful stranger was taken back by my response…
‘Babe, are you on your way?’ “I apologize for running into you, but I have to go. Uhmm, good luck with the egg.” I don’t know what washed over me…
I know it wasn’t the fact I had plans with Abbie… “Damn.” I muttered to myself. ‘Change of plans, going to be a little late.’ I slipped my phone in my pocket and turned around towards the girl who was now bending down salvaging what groceries she could.
She was just about to reach for an apple but I grabbed for it first. Looking up her eyes met mine and I gave an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry about that, it was rude of me.” I handed her the apple and she took it slipping it back into the only salvaged paper sack.
“Uhmm, thanks.” She gave a half smile. We were there in silence for a good ten minutes picking up all the spilt groceries and cleaning the egg out of the floor. When we finished we stood there awkwardly.
“Listen, I really am sorry for taking off like that. I hope you can find it in your heart to forgive a wanker like myself…” I let out; she just chuckled and stuck out a hand. “Charlie.”
Taking her hand in my own, “Harry”, I gave her hand a shake before we were interrupted. “So this is why you’re ‘going to be late’”. Shit.
I looked in the direction of that voice. “Abbie, hey. Yeah, on my way to the coffee shop I ran into Charlie here and knocked her groceries out of her hand while texting you back.” Abbie raised an eyebrow, “Right… well it was nice meeting you Charlie but we have plans.” With that I felt her grab on to my hand and pull me towards the elevator.
I looked back to Charlie with an apologetic look but she had already disappeared.
“You didn’t have to be rude.” I didn’t have to see it; I knew she rolled her eyes. “Baby she’s no one. For all you know she could have been someone’s maid, besides she’s probably long gone now.” I took a deep breath.
My continued as planned with Abbie, but I would be lying if I said Charlie wasn’t running through my mind.
