If I Lay Here

Chapter 26

Harry's POV

"Harry...Haz..." someone whispered over me. Why is it so hard to get a decent night sleep around here? I groaned, pulling my duvet further over my head and burying myself deeper into the sheets. It couldn't be morning. Ally and I only got home a couple hours ago. "Harry, seriously, get up." The voice sounded sterner than before. Just as I was about to protest, the duvet was violently yanked from my grip. Glaring down from above me was a very knackered looking Liam.

"Bloody hell. What are you doing!?" I questioned, peering over to my phone where the time was shining brightly on the screen. 3:27.

"Louis and Zayn built a bonfire downstairs." Liam explained, running his fingers through the front of his hair.

"Why now? It’s early!" I was honestly whining, but I didn't care at this point. I valued my sleep.

"Don't ask. He's waking up Ally now, so just come down for at least an hour and then you can come back to bed," With a groan, I heaved myself out of bed, tossing on the white basketball shorts that hung over the bed post. Liam stalked out of the room first with me sauntering close behind. I pulled the door shut after me, pausing to see Louis guiding a shattered looking Ally from her room.

His hands were placed on the small of her back, lightly advancing her further down the hall. Her straight hair flowed in delicate waves in her ponytail after sleeping on it for the short amount of time we had to close our eyes. Based on the way she was muttering something at Louis I could tell she didn't want to be awake either.

"Louis, in America we like to be asleep at 3:30 in the morning," she grumbled, sleepily rubbing at her eyes.

"Oh come on love! There will be plenty of time to sleep after you enjoy my company for a bit," he responded with a wink. Just as they turned the corner Ally caught sight of me. She flashed me a pleading look as if to tell me to talk Louis down, but even I knew that was hopeless.

"Boo, please let us go back to bed." I begged, jutting out my bottom lip ever so slightly and making sure to quiver just a bit. Louis rolled his eyes, dodging my plea, and collected me, with Ally, to go downstairs. The sliding glass doors to the backyard were wide open revealing a roaring fire a few feet away. I noticed three figures, from where we were, to be the other boys sitting in lawn chairs. The warmth did feel incredible.

Once we stepped outside, Louis abandoned us to sit in the vacant Adirondack next to Zayn. He flashed me crooked grin before lifting a beer bottle to his lips. He must have bought it himself, because I hadn't bought any. I wasn't planning on drinking the entire time Ally was here. Without another thought, I pulled Ally onto the love-seat. She curled up on the left half, stopping her toes just before my half began. I sat beside her, draping my arm gently across her back.

"Does someone want to explain whose idea it was to make a fire at 3 o'clock in the morning?" I grumbled. Ally tapped my thigh with her toes as if to tell me not to be rude.

"Gee. What crawled in your trousers today, Haz?" Liam muttered running his hands over his face. Niall chuckled at my expense only leading the other lads to mimic his nature. I glanced over at Ally who was fighting back a smile from behind the palm of her small hand.

“Well, what are we going to do?” Zayn asked aloud before taking a quick swig from his beer bottle.

“We could tell scary stories,” Niall suggested with a shrug. I scrunched my nose up at the idea. It just seemed so cliché. Still, when are we ever not cliché? The other boys seemed to feel the same as they quickly dismissed the option in the nicest way they possibly could.

“We remember what happened the last time we listened to something scary.” Liam said. All eyes turned to Ally. Her cheeks had flushed a brilliant pink in remembrance of attacking poor ‘mini Louis’ after watching The Orphan. Louis protectively cupped his member in remembrance as well.

“I’d prefer to have children sometime in my old age, thank you!” He whined with a light laugh at the end.

“Hey, at least we know who not to mess with!” Zayn pointed out, tipping the top of his beer bottle towards Ally in congratulations.

“How about we do that then?” Liam tried. “That was a pretty embarrassing moment for Louis. Now Niall, give us yours!” At first I was sure this was just as cliché as scary stories, but after a while we were all just trying to get a breather in from laughing so hard. Niall mentioned this one time when he was forced to break out into song and dance like in High School Musical. Liam talked about his first date with Danielle and how he had to explain why he was eating his soup with a fork. The list went on and on with the embarrassing stories we could tell. Somehow, I avoided telling my stories, but Louis was too quick to notice that.

“Lads, lads! I think we’ve heard enough from us. However, young Harold has yet to enlighten us!” He cheered, rushing from his Adirondack to sit cross legged in front of me. He peered up at me like a child waiting to be read the nursery tale at the library. I cleared my throat and ran my fingers through my curls. I tend to embarrass myself probably the most out of the lot of us.

“Louis, remember the first day we met Ally at the beach?” I asked, placing my hands in my knees and leaning forward to talk directly to him.

“Of course I do! You kept looking back out the window and slamming your hands on the dash because you didn’t get her number! I was afraid you were going to pop a hole right through the rental! ” A laugh escaped Ally’s lips, coming out much louder than intended. She quickly clamped a hand around her mouth as she continued to giggle probably at the image of me looking like a lovesick puppy and acting like the Hulk. “What about it?”

“I snuck out that night,” I said as if I was telling them a secret that could be fatal to the whole world. Louis and the lads let out a surprised gasp even though I knew they weren’t shocked at all.

“You didn’t!” Louis gaped.

“Oh but I did!” I assured him. “I snuck out and went for the beach to get everything she dropped, but then I realized I didn’t have a way to get back to her house.”

“It’s down the street mate.” Louis told me as if it would help the Harry in the story to get to the house faster.

“I know, but it was dark and I wandered pretty far down the beach. I ended up deciding to take a bus back to where I dropped my car off a few miles down the road.” The boys nodded, all following along. I could tell by the puzzled expression in Ally’s eyes she was trying to see where I was going with this thing. Her lips were pursed in a thin line and her brows were furrowed ever so slightly the way mine do when I concentrate. “Just as I was walking to the bus stop it started pouring. I mean buckets of rain unlike anything we’ve seen back home. On the bus this group of guys assured me I would win their wet t-shirt contest, a little girl asked me why I didn’t just use an umbrella, and then the younger boy next to her leaned over the seat and poured his chocolate milk all over the front of my pants to make it look like I wee’d myself! In one bus ride I was violated and humiliated right before I was about to see the one girl I fancied like my life depended on it!”

I glanced around the fire to see recognition spread across all of the lads faces as my story sunk in. Niall and Liam turned to each other with small smiles spread upon their lips. I thought no one was going to say anything, but I was wrong.

“That is the most embarrassing story you have Haz?! I bet I could rattle off about a hundred more right now!” Louis exclaimed. “Like remember that time I shoved straws up your nose when you were asleep and you didn’t notice them when you started talking to Paul?”

“Or how about the time you made me my birthday cake, but tripped over Brit and dropped the cake on the top of your head!” Liam added.

“Don’t forget that one time all of those fans outside your house made posters of your baby pictures!” Niall reminded us. Before I knew it everyone was sharing embarrassing Harry stories. Ally was clinging to their every word, giggling at my expense every so often. After a while the fire began to die out around us. Zayn threw the last log on the existing flames before going back to his seat. I ran my fingers through my curls, glancing to Ally on my left who was curled up and sleeping soundly to our voices talking amongst her. It was incredible how peaceful she looked. Her body rose and fell calmly with her breathing. My eyes trailed to her lips. They were one of my favorite things about her. I loved the way they curved upwards, nearly into a smile. They did this all the time! Even when she had the most neutral expression on her face the corners of her lips curved up. I thought at first it wasn’t that unique, but most of the girls I’ve encountered, whether it was a friend or a fan, had the corners of their lips curve downward. I’m not sure if Ally ever noticed it herself, but I found it one of her amazing features that make her so beautiful.

“HARRY!” Niall yelled suddenly, yanking me from my thought and tearing me from the sleeping girl sitting next to me.

“Sorry…what?” I wondered. The lads all chuckled around me.

“I said, wouldn’t it be a great idea if we cut off all of your curls and taped them to your forehead instead, but you were too busy staring at Ally to notice.” Louis explained. My hands instantly went to my hair to make sure they didn’t go through with the plan and I was too spaced out to notice.

“You look like a lovesick puppy Haz!” Liam exclaimed. I glanced down at Ally who stirred lightly in her sleep. I gently lifted her from the opposite end and rested her head on my lap. My fingers absentmindedly tangled themselves in her hair causing the corners of her lips turn upwards even more, though it didn’t seem like she was going to wake.

“You all think I love her?” I asked quietly.

“It’s rather obvious babe,” Louis insisted, “I've never seen you look at another person the way you look at her.” I knew I was in love with her. I think I've known it for quite a while now, but it took me a while to grow a pair and take a chance. I need to find the perfect time, the perfect moment to tell her. Some moment where I don't have to worry about one of the boys strolling in with there arse only covered by boxers or a fan chasing us down for a picture.

"HARRY!" Niall shouted again. I shook my head from my thoughts like before to find the same eight pairs of eyes on me.

"See! You keep zoning out when you look at her!" Louis pointed out excitedly, bouncing up and down in his seat with his index finger pointed directly at me.

"You've got it bad mate." Zayn added. I ran my fingers lightly through my hair. I've never been so sure.

"I'm in love with her."
