If I Lay Here

Chapter 25

The next morning, Harry and I woke to the lights on and the sun attempting to shine through the few clouds dotting the sky. He guided me through the sheet fort and down the stairs to join the boys around the island in the kitchen. Zayn was busy working at the stove. The smell of scrambled eggs, bacon, and fresh fruit moved around the crowded room.

“Yay! You’re awake!” Louis shouted, flailing his arms in the air. I chuckled and sat down in the seat next to him, instantly wrapping my arms tightly around his waist. Louis was quick to reciprocate the hug before pressing a light kiss to the top of my head and pulling away smiling.

“Thank you for the fort last night, all of you,” I said as Zayn started passing out the food amongst us all.

“It was our pleasure.” Liam assured me with a wink. Harry scooted onto the stool next to me, brushing his thigh gently against mine.

“I was going to meet Perrie for the day. She and the girls are in town for a couple of days.” Zayn informed us before popping a forkful of scrambled eggs into his mouth. I smiled at him, knowing that my match making was actually working out.

“Yeah, Danielle and I are grabbing lunch and a movie tonight too, so I won’t be around either.” Liam chimed in.

“Well, now we’re down to four to go out tonight,” Louis said, thinking aloud, “That’s okay though!”

“Lou, I…erm…I have something planned for tonight,” Harry mumbled. I turned to face him to noticed him playing with his eggs and a blush creeping up his cheeks.

“I’m meeting Deo this afternoon, mate, but tonight I’ll be ready to take over!” Niall cheered, reaching over to high-five Louis in excitement.

“Well if you three will be home this afternoon,” Liam began, gesturing to Louis, Harry and I, “would you mind running to the store? I think some of the food went bad during the power outage.”

“No problem,” Harry answered. One of his hands fell from the countertop. I felt his fingers brush up against my thigh much like his own thigh did before. The tips of his fingers dragged along my skin, finding their way to my arm, and lacing our fingers together.

Liam quickly jotted down a list of things to buy as we finished up breakfast. Zayn quickly disappeared to his room to get ready after some light teasing from the other boys. It was kind of cute how nervous he was. I think they could all tell he really liked Perrie, so the teasing turned to words of encouragement before Zayn left. Liam left shortly after with Niall in tow. Then there were three.

I slowly stepped into the warm water encompassing the shower. It felt as if the water was washing away any worry I ever had stored up in my head. However, with Harry, it didn’t seem as if the worry was all that important. Everything was so easy. My music was flowing from the small radio in the corner of the room. Softly, I sang along, not giving a single care in the world. Then, I was working conditioner through my hair when I heard the door creak open.

“Hello?” I called from behind the curtain. From the other side I heard the low, raspy laugh couldn’t mistake from anywhere. I pulled the curtain back only to expose my head, confirming my thoughts in the process. Harry was sitting on the counter of the sink, his hair dripping wet and hanging in front of his face and a towel wrapped securely around his waist. His lips were turned into the most menacing smile. “What are you doing in here!?”

“I heard your singing and wanted to hear a better version of the show.” He confessed with a slight laugh. I rolled my eyes, disappearing back behind the curtain to finish washing the product out of my long hair. When I finished I turned the water off and held a hand outside the curtain for Harry to pass me my towel. I could hear him laugh extremely loud on the other side making me blush a deep pink.

“Go get dressed Styles! We have a busy day with Louis ahead of us!”

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When I came back downstairs, Harry was already there and Louis was pacing back and forth in front of him. As soon as he caught a glimpse of me he gestured for me to take a seat next to Harry.

"Listen here soldiers!" Louis began. I shot Harry a questioning glance. He just shrugged lightly and went back to focusing on something on the floor. "Today we have a very important mission. I call it Operation FOOD! Now, in order to pull this operation off soldiers, we're gonna need disguises!"

Harry and I looked to each other with puzzled expressions. Suddenly, Louis pulled me up from the couch and fluffed my hair.

"Since you two will be recognized for your curls, take one of those circley brushes and blow dry it out! I've seen Lou do it thousands of times!" Louis cheered.

"Louis, you know I hate that." Harry mumbled, crossing his arms and furrowing his eyebrows up at Louis.

"I promise your curls will bounce back as soon as we come home," Lou assured him. Harry huffed, but I knew he was going to agree. "As for me. I'm going to go take a quick shower and blow dry some hair gel in my hair to make it curlier. We'll change things up. Now let's go, let's go, let's go!"

Louis pushed Harry and I upstairs into the bathroom nearest my room and thrust an extra blow dryer in Harry's arms. With that, he left us to create his curly master piece.

"Can you help me?" Harry pouted, taking a seat back on the countertop, much like earlier. I nodded, ruffling his damp curls before reaching around to grab a round brush. Carefully, I began taking sections of Harry's hair over the brush and applying heat as I slid the brush down.

Surprisingly, it didn't take long. Harry had his eyes shut with a smile playing on his lips. Once I finished, Harry did his little shake and swipe making him look a teeny tiny bit like George Shelley. It was weird to see him with straighter hair.

Without turning off the blow dryer, I started working through my hair. Harry watched intently, fiddling his fingers on the hem of my camisole.

"Do I look weird?" He asked, running his fingers through the front of his hair and lightly tugging on the roots. I shook my head no and continued to move the round brush under the heat. Just as I was shutting off the blow dryer, Louis strolled in.

His hair was extremely wavy with little bits that formed loose curls which I pressumed were made by him twirling strands with his fingers. He and Harry both did a double take on each other before going into full fits of laughter.

"Now that we look ridiculous," Louis began as he took a glance at himself in the mirror, "on to the disguises! Harry, you have to wear long sleeves to cover up those tattoos, steal one of Liam's snapbacks to mix it up, and use those fake glasses you have!"

Harry nodded before leaving to change. I waited for Louis to give me my instructions, fiddling with the ends of my hair.

"Ally, I would either pull your hair up or wear a hat. The fans may recognize it down. And I'd wear your glasses." He said while turning on his heel to leave. My eyes opened wide with shock at his last statement.

"Wait!" I called after him, "How did you find out?" Louis smirked under his wavy fringe.

"I saw the contacts box in the bin. Does Harry know you wear glasses, because I didn't!" I felt my cheeks get pink. It's not a big deal, but I've always been a bit self conscious about them. I nodded in response. Louis smiled and headed down to his room leaving me to change.

HARRYS POV

I stood at the bottom of the stairs, picking at a loose thread on the black v-neck I threw on. Louis was just heading down when I heard her door click open. I saw her blond hair swinging back and forth in the ponytail she styled it into. It wasn't until she turned to come down the stairs that I felt the corners of my mouth curve into a smile. Resting on the bridge of her nose were the square frames I recognized from countless Skype conversations.

"You ready?" She asked Louis and I. I could tell by the way she shifted on her toes that she was uncertain. Louis smiled brightly at her in reassurance.

"Let's go soldiers!" He cheered. We all piled into my car, Louis opting to sit smack dab in the middle of the backseat. When we pulled in to the same store Ally and I went to a few days ago, we noticed a few groups of teens wandering in. Ally's eyes grew wide with a mixture of nervousness and excitement. She began twirling her ponytail with her fingers, absent mindedly. I wanted nothing more than to pull her into a reassuring kiss, soothing her of the memory she inflicted when with Eleanor. I would keep her safe.

I was deep in my thoughts when Louis cleared his throat. I snapped out of it, looking around to see Ally and Louis both giving me looks of concern. "This is what we've practiced for," Louis stated, "Showtime."

ALLY'S POV

As soon as we entered through the doors Louis split with half of the list. Harry and I made our way to the entrée section to pick up food for dinner. Some of the teenage girls looked at Harry adoringly as we passed by, not recognizing him, but fawning over his looks. I suppose we looked like a different pairing; Harry being a cute hipster boy while I was his little nerdy girlfriend.

"Which pizza should we get?" Harry asked, pulling me away from the staring girls.
"I'm not sure...you pick." I mumbled, looking at the ground. Harry spun me in his arms, lifting my chin with his thumb.

"Don't pay attention to them Ally," he said, noting the girls giggling as they walked by, "let's get the pizza's and go play some tricks on Louis."

I nodded and Harry and I carried on with our shopping. He held my hand tightly in his while we walked, placing kisses on my forehead every once in a while. The girls gave me dirty looks, but Harry's touch made my worries disappear. It just felt good to be walking around with Harry and not get bulldozed by fans or paparazzi.

When we reached the aisle Louis was in Harry pulled me behind a display of sodas. He had a mischievous glint in his eyes that I usually only saw in Louis'. Harry motioned for me to keep quiet before peeking over the top carton.

"OH MY GOD! OH MY GOD! IS THAT REALLY HIM!?" Harry called in a high pitched voice. I nearly had a heart attack trying to hold in my laughter. I couldn't believe a noise like that came out of a boy with a voice as low and raspy as his. Louis instantly whipped around frantically, looking around before spotting the top of Harry's hat.

"Oi! You little shits! I really thought someone recognized me." He responded with a laugh, "Are you ready to go? I'm getting weird looks." Harry and I nodded, laughing our heads off as soon as Louis turned his back to us. We got in the nearest checkout line and I started helping Louis unpack the carriage. Suddenly, Harry bounced next to me.

"Wanna just stay in these outfits for our date? I'm feeling adventurous!" Harry cheered with a wink. Louis rolled his eyes next to us.

"Whatever you'd like. Although I'm kind of missing the curls," I replied with a sigh. Harry chuckled while he handed the cashier his card. The lady looked at the name and I saw her eyes nearly pop out of her head. Harry flashed a smile as she handed it back, uttering a 'thank you' before we waltzed out the door.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After dropping off the groceries and Louis, Harry and I began our drive to this mystery date.

"Can you give me a hint?" I begged. Harry glanced over at me with a sly smile. Something about today was turning him into Louis.

"Nope," he replied, popping the 'p'.

"Pleeeeeease!" I whined. Harry smiled brightly, a smile I really only saw when he was being his complete self.

"Absolutely not." He teased with a smirk. After driving for about twenty minutes it was beginning to get darker out. Harry pulled into a little bakery. Through the glass windows I could see couples and families sitting over a cup of tea or muffins. Even with the windows up, the smell of freshly baked cookies found their way into the car.

"Please tell me we are stopping here!" I cheered. Harry nodded and I just about bolted from the car. Harry chuckled and jogged to catch up to me. He led me to the register where a middle aged woman in an apron was replenishing the raspberry twists in the display window.

"I have an order for Styles," he said in a rather hushed tone. The woman smiled before rushing into the back. I placed my hands on the display counter, looking over the desserts and baked goods lining the glass. Harry placed his hand on the small of my back and rested his chin on my head.

"Do you want anything?" He wondered.

"Can I get the blueberry muffin?" I asked him, pointing to a medium sized muffin sprinkled with large grains of sugar and dotted with purplish blueberries. Just then, the woman returned with a massive take out bag.

“Will that be all?” She asked politely, ringing up what we already ordered. Harry added the muffin to the order, and before I knew it we were back to driving. By the time we parked again, London was illuminated with lights seeing as the sun had already set. I leaned forward to look out the mirror only to see the London Eye lit up and staring right back at me.

“Harry! Are we gonna ride it?” I questioned excitedly.

“Even better. We are having a picnic while we ride it!” He exclaimed, pulling me from the car and to the man running the ticket booth. “Hi, I called earlier. My name is Harry…Harry Styles.” The man nodded, skimming his finger over an open book to confirm the time.

“Okay Mr. Styles, you have until 9:30. Is an hour and a half enough time?” Harry nodded, responding with a ’thank you’ before he followed the man out to the main entrance. We stepped inside the awaiting cart to be met with a typical picnic blanket and soft music playing from somewhere. The man shut the door behind us and we began our ascent into the air.

“Harry, this is gorgeous!” I gushed. Harry smiled, pulling out two boxes from inside his takeout bag. I opened mine, finding a croissant roll stuffed with oozing cheese and what looked like ham or bacon. Harry pulled the same from his box, glancing over at me through his fringe.

“Is this all okay?” He asked cautiously.

“This is beyond okay Harry! Did you rent it out?” Harry nodded sheepishly. I looked out to the scenery around us even more amazed than before. I could just tell we were nearing the top. I saw lights from every angle dancing and twinkling on the water below us. “You don’t have to spend so much next time. I love all of your little, simple ideas!”

“I know you do,” he confessed, “and I don’t mind spoiling you a bit. I’ve never met someone that deserved this as much as you. I won’t be able to do things like this after this month ends.” I noticed Harry’s voice became a little shaky as he neared the end of his sentence.

“What do you mean? Skype dates don’t reach the top of the London Eye?” I teased. Harry looked up from his food with a smile. He leaned over to give me a peck on the cheek. We continued talking and finishing out dinner until I felt the “ride” come to a stop. When I peered out, we were officially at the tippity top of the London Eye. All of the city hung below us. Cars whizzed along on the roads, a few boats maneuvered along the waterways, and little specks of people moved about. “Come here!” I told Harry.

He obliged, moving to my side as I pulled out my iPhone. I switched the camera to face us, making sure to get as much of the background as possible. The first picture was us smiling, the second one had Harry kissing my cheeks gently, and in the third one we pulled funny faces. After Harry got carried away with the pictures, nearly attacking me with silly faces in every photo. Finally we settled in for dessert. I began picking away at my muffin when Harry spoke up.

“Tell me something I don’t know about you.” I looked up at him confused. He knew mostly everything about me since we were talking for so long, but still I had to try.

“Um, let’s see, when I lived in Colorado I had this best friend. His name was Ryder. Anyways, me and Ryder use to do everything together. He was somewhat popular for our age and I was kind of the opposite, so when he got a little girlfriend, she was always really mean to me. She told Ryder to tell me he thought I was annoying so I would leave, and instead of making him say anything I punched her right in the face!” Harry burst out in laughter, probably trying to picture a ten year old me punching a girl. It actually was pretty funny at the time. “I got a call sent to my parents and I had to apologize, but it was worth it.”

“If you’re going to hit someone, might as well hit them hard!” Harry exclaimed, still holding his stomach from laughing so hard. “Have you seen Ryder? Weren’t you two close?”

“We were, but I left for California at the end of that school year and we sort of lost touch.” I explained. Harry nodded, tugging me into his side and we laid on our stomachs over looking the city. With a sigh, I cuddled in, silently promising myself I would try to contact Ryder as soon as I got home. I don’t think I could survive senior year without a best friend.
