The Night I Met Harry

Rain.

He pulled me as we ran toward the car, the rain beating down on us like there had been puddles in the sky. We reached it quickly as he hastily searched his jeans for the keys.

Harry:
"Shit."

He pulled on the knob when he'd realized he'd locked them in the car. His coat was removed and given to me to put over my head. I could tell he was annoyed with the situation, the rain dampening the curls of his hair. He continued to pull as if the lock would eventually give. I began to laugh the more we both drenched. He turned toward slowly me to find the source of my humor.

Winter:
"It's alright Harry."

I removed the coat from over my head to hold it out to him. My hair was already as wet as if I'd taken a shower. The laughing continued.

Winter:
"...it's just rain."

He watched me as we stood there, whatever annoyance that had been brewing suddenly leaving him with my words. The rain continued to beat between us. My bag was in the car with my keys so we wouldn't be getting back in the house. He leaned against the car on his back, pulling me toward him into his chest. It was quiet out except for the patter of the rain against the ground. His hands found my damp head to face him. His fingers encouraged my chin closer to his face and we'd begun slowly kissing in the rain. I closed my eyes to realm in the moment. I secretly loved that he’d always been the first to extend his tongue. I stood slightly on the tips of my toes to accommodate. I wondered momentarily if anyone had been watching us out here. His hunger for our closeness grew intense and I could tell he'd been wanting more than this innocent exchange. I pulled away reluctantly as he intertwined our fingers.

We now stood under a large tree nearby, it succeeded in shielding us from the earth’s tears.

Winter:
"…What now?"

I clung to him as the wind blew slightly and admired the view.

Winter:
“It’s beautiful right…I’m going to paint it.”

Harry:
“How do you paint rain?”

His hands rubbed in a comforting motion against my back as we listened to the rhythm around us.

Winter:
“You’ll see…”

I remembered something vaguely after we’d left from getting Harry’s eye contacts.

Winter:
“Wait…”

I felt against his bum on the pockets of his jeans and pulled out our solution.

Winter:
“Is this what you were looking for?”

I dangled the key between us and watch as he brought his palm up to his forehead in a tiring manner. My laughter resumed.

--

I sat up on the counter patiently as he’d asked. He’d turned up the heat considerably already in fear I’d become sick from earlier. My vision was restricted with some dark fabric he’d found for our little game. I knew it was just his way of getting me to eat something with some nutrient, being that I either ate a lot or not at all these days.

Harry:
“Open.”

He put the fork to my mouth for me to accept the contents past my teeth again. It was a variety of fruit together to throw me off from guessing each separately. I chewed slowly, letting my taste buds give me the answers to me.

Winter:
“I taste whipped cream. Is that whipped cream?”

Harry:
“Mm hm. What else?”

Winter:
“Strawberry…kiwi, I think…and…pineapple.”

Harry:
“How are you doing that? I suck at this.”

I laughed as I removed the blind fold.

Winter:
“Yay, so I win?”

He nodded as he embraced my lips with his again. I ruffled my fingers through his curls, realizing more than ever lately that he enjoyed it. The marveled counter was cool on my bare legs, his touch warmed me leveling it out.

Winter:
"We need to talk about something."

The tone between us had taken a serious turn anytime one of us led the conversation with that.
He stepped back to study me, handing me the remainder of the strawberries.

Harry:
"What's that?"

Winter:
"...I just umm... spoke to your mom."

His dark brows moved closer to the top line of eyes as he frowned with suspicion. I bit into the berry while I awaited his reaction.

Harry:
"What do you mean you spoke to my mom... when?"

Winter:
"The other day when you were with your friends...She stopped by..."

Harry:
"Was she rude to you?"

I looked away as I remembered the bar exam she'd been drilling me with before things settled. There was demand in his voice as it escaped deeply. I fingered with my hair idly.

Winter:
"We're fine."

I decided on cleverly avoiding the question rather than opening up too much.

Harry:
"I'm asking you seriously, because if she did she's going to hear from me."

Winter:
"She's great. That's not necessary."

I finished the strawberry after nipping it slowly; grateful he'd popped off the leaves first.

Harry:
"...did she mention anything else?..."

He began wiping the counter top with the dish rag, nervously rearranging things in the process.

Winter:
"Uh, like what?"

I'd rarely gotten this kind of reaction from him being that it was usually me who fidgeted uncontrollably. He cleared his throat quickly before continuing.

Harry:
"Never mind. Um.. you should probably go get some sleep now, it's late."

Winter:
"Is something wrong?"

He helped me from the counter and encouraged me toward the stairs.

Harry:
"Of course not. I'm going to clean up okay, I'll be up."

I didn't argue as I watched him navigate back to the kitchen. But it wouldn't be long before I pieced together what that was about.
