Jeggings, tank top with a hoodie over it, and oversized sunglasses are what I wore to the airport the morning we were leaving for Raleigh.

The plane ride was a solid 24 hours. It was rather excruciating.

Once we landed, we headed straight to our hotel and took power naps. That evenings, Dad, Grandma, Grandpa, and I all went out to dinner.

It was very awkward being there with Grandpa. Nonetheless, the meal itself was good and I just didn’t talk to Grandpa much.

While in the restaurant, a few people recognized us and a few people were taking pictures of us, mostly from afar.

Right before we left, I went to go use the bathroom. A few girls were quietly whispering to each other after I walked in, like they knew me and what I was there for.

A few of them left, I assumed, because I heard the doors open and close, didn’t hear any more voices, and sensed I was alone.

After finishing the in the bathroom and washing my hands, I opened the bathroom door to see a tall, middle aged man wearing dress clothes was standing right there.

Sir,” the man said to me, “I will have to ask you to leave right now.”

“What?” I asked, confused. “Why?”

“Men cannot use the women’s bathroom in North Carolina.” The man said. “If you don’t leave now, I will call the police for trespassing.”

Before I had a lot of time to react, the man grabbed my upper arm and started pulling me out. His big hands hurt my arms.

“Let me go!” I screeched as he dragged me through the restaurant to the door.

A bunch of people were recording on their smartphones. Dad and my grandparents look horrified and shocked.

Dad stood up and walked over to the man. “Let go of her!” He demanded, and when the man didn’t let go of me, dad physically shoved the man so he would let go of me.

“Don’t worry.” Dad said. “We’re leaving and never coming back.”
