While I did feel like he asked me because he felt like he had to, not because he wanted to, I still felt like this was progress. And I loved him for trying so hard.

Generally speaking, fathers do like going to these dances because it is such a big deal in the school, but they usually just end up standing along the walls of the gym where the dance takes place, talking to each other as the teens dance.

Gabbi and I went shopping for a dress for this dance. It is such a big deal at our school! It’s like prom, except those below Year 11 can go.

A few hours before the dance started, Gabbi and I were getting ready together in my upstairs bathroom.

We were just about ready when I heard a doorbell ring.

“It’s probably my Dad.” Gabbi said. “Are you ready?”

“I think so. I’m actually nervous.” I confessed.

“Well you look fierce, so you don’t have to worry about that.” Gabbi reassured.

“You look fierce, too!” I said.

The two of us walked downstairs and into the entryway. I saw my dad wearing a clean cut suit, looking more put together than I had ever seen him before.

“You look beautiful!” Gabbi’s dad said to her.

“You look great too, Emelia.” Dad said to me. Of course, he didn’t say I’m beautiful.

I could tell that my dad was ridiculously uncomfortable and that he felt ashamed to be publically displaying me as his daughter like this.

I felt like I was twisting his arm; forcing him to do something he wasn’t comfortable with.
