“Hello.” Grandpa said dryly as he walked down the stairs and saw me.

“LET’S EAT!” Grandma somewhat yelled as everyone made their way to the dining room.

After a few minutes of eating and relative silence, they finally started hammering me with questions.

“Is it difficult to know which bathrooms and locker rooms to use at school, Emelia?” Stella asked me, once again putting extra emphasis on my name.

“They have a couple gender neutral ones.” I answered. “I just usually use those. But, speaking of school, there is a big father-daughter dance that apparently is a really big deal that everyone’s going to. That should be fun.”

Dad looked like he was a deer in the headlights. It occurred to me that this was inadvertently the first time I was bringing this up to him.

“Elephant in the room, I’m just going to say it.” Grandpa suddenly said. “So Emmett, you’re trying to be a girl now?”

I shot him a nasty look.

“I’m not trying to be a girl; I am a girl.” I clarified.

“So you have a vagina now?” He shot back.

“GRANDPA!” Sarah exclaimed in disapproval.

“Luke, why would you let your boy wear a dress?” Grandpa spewed.

“How can you say that?” I asked with disgust.

I then turned to Dad, waiting for him to defend me. “Are you seriously going to let Grandpa talk to me like that?” I asked. Both Grandpa and I were staring at Dad while everyone else sat in stiff discomfort.

He didn’t say anything, so I decided to get up and leave.
