We Took A Chance

Wet welcome

I've been here a week so far and I'm feeling homesick. I decided that I should get a job before school starts next week. I was hoping to get something in retail but this cute little cafe about 5 blocks away from Uni caught my eye. I went ahead and asked if they were hiring and turns out that one of the girls left on sudden maternity leave. She wasn't due yet so the premature birth of her baby caught them unprepared. I was interviewed and hired on the spot.

Our agreement was that I'd work part time with full days on Saturday and Sunday and 4 hours on Monday mornings. This was an excellent arrangement as I don't have classes on Mondays or the weekend. Tomorrow is my first day and I'm excited.

When my alarm goes off in the morning, I immediately get up to get my routine done. It feels strange how motivated I've been since this opportunity came into my life. Before this, I wanted to spend all day in bed. I was always running late.

When I walked into the cafe, it was just the manager and I. We were in charge of opening the place. He was a heavy set man about mid 30's and he introduced himself as John.
"Ok, kid, Monday mornings are the busiest here. You're new so I'll be helping and Ezra will be here. He's going to teach you how to make the coffee and sandwiches while I work the register. Don't forget to wear your apron and name tag at all times. Hygiene is key so please wash your hands often."

I listen to him intently with my hands tightly behind my back. Once he's done instructing me, I grab a navy apron with the cafe's logo and wash my hands thoroughly. I then see a guy around my age with shoulder length hair come in through the doors. It must be Ezra.

"Oh, hey. You must be the new girl." he says and smiles sweetly. It catches me off guard how nice he was, by looking at him I would guess he would be an ass.
"I am." I assure him not knowing what all to say.
Without another word, he comes behind the counter and grabs an apron from the same place I did and pulls out his name tag from his pocket. Crap, I forgot to get a name tag.
"Hey, um, where do I get a name tag?" I ask Ezra who is pushing some buttons on the register.
He reaches in a drawer under the register and hands me a blank name tag.
"Thanks." I tell him and begin to write my name on it.

-.-.-

I was only working half a day today since it was Monday so the day went by fast. Ezra was very helpful at teaching me all I needed to know. Although it was a very busy morning, I can tell I will love this job.

At the end of my shift I thank Ezra for his help and for being so patient with me. I walk out of the bakery and start heading towards the Uni. It had been raining all morning and the streets were lined with large brown puddles.

Before I could finish my thought, a black sedan whisked by me and made a puddle splash onto the sidewalk drenching me in dirty water.

"Fuck!" I yelled out. Thanks for the welcome, London.
"Shit, fuck, I'm so sorry." I hear a man say close behind me.
I turn around to face the man he is wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap.
"Eh, a little water won't hurt." and for some reason I began to laugh. The man also started laughing and soon we were both just standing there probably looking like crazy fools.
"Please, let me give you a ride. It's the least I can do." he offers and I look back to his car which is parked in front of the cafe. It was really shiny, probably expensive and I didn't want to ruin it.
"No, I wouldn't want to ruin your car." I inform him, secretly hoping he would insist.
"Wait, Zoe?" the man before me questions taking off his sunglasses.
"Niall?" I ask and now I feel embarrassed to know who is before me. Niall, Leah's cousin.
"What.. What are you doing here?" he asks before walking closer to me.
"I live here." I tuck a strand of hair behind my ear.
"What? That's great." Niall says and gives me a smile. "Then I'm definitely not taking a no on the ride. Come on." he motions for me to follow him toward his car.
"Where to?" he asks once we're inside his car. It really was so nice and I'm definitely ruining the black leather seats.
"I live in the halls of UCL." He begins to drive and I couldn't help notice his smile.
"So, you're going to school here?"
"Yes, I just got here a week ago. I'm still getting used to everything." I respond and look out the window.
"Sorry for the wet welcome." he snickers a little and I huff and shake my head before letting out a small laugh.

We get to the halls pretty quickly as it's not far. Niall pulls up to the curb and turns off the car.
"Thanks for the ride, sorry about your seats." I go to open the door when he stops me.
"Wait, I want to give you my number. I know it's hard to live where you don't know anyone. You can count on me if you ever need anything." he says to my surprise.
"Oh, uh, sure." I say and take out my cellphone to save his number.

Notes

The past two chapters suck so bad even though I wrote like 5 versions of them. I just have a lot on my mind right now. I promise the next one will be better. Especially because Niall is back in Zoe's life. :)

If you're reading, vote, comment, and sub. It makes me happy and motivates me to update often. Otherwise I feel like no one is reading :(

Also, I kind of what to do an AMA (ask me anything) so if you have any questions about me, go ahead and ask. :D
