A Life for A Life

A Brief Reunion

*Caitlyn’s POV*

This was it. I had the right address. I stared up at the house. It was a modern brick home, normal and civil. It seemed so welcoming, but I knew I couldn’t spend much time here. I held the envelope in my hand, still standing on the sidewalk across from the street. I wasn’t sure on what I should do.

I saw the door click open. I looked both ways on the street before moving forward to cross slowly. The woman I knew as my birthmother, Susan Ann Jepson, was going to her mailbox, looking in. I was nearing her, but she didn’t seem to pay any mind. She started to pull out some mail, but something caught on the opening, causing envelopes to fall on the ground. She cursed at herself before bending down and beginning to pick up the mail.

I bent down also, helping her, slipping my own envelope in the pile. “Here.” I said, holding out my portion of mail.

A smile came across her face. It sparked up her green eyes. I could tell the flash of familiarity flash across her face. I looked familiar to her, but she couldn’t place where. I offered a small smile before I heard the front door open again. “Susan! Hurry up, the movie is about to start!”

We both straightened our posture as we heard him speak. I looked over at the door, seeing my birthfather, Gregory Lee Jepson, standing there. He offered a small wave as he saw me. “Hey, neighbor!” He called cheerily.

I felt a smile touch my features. “Thank you.” I heard my mother say to me. She touched my arm. “I haven’t seen you before, are you new here?”

I looked over at her. I smiled. “It’s nice seeing you. But no, I’m not new here. I’m just passing by.”

“Are you meeting a friend?”

I felt myself do a small nod. “You can call it something like that.”

“Well, it’s nice to meet you sweetheart. I hope you have a wonderful stay.”

From there we departed. I gave the house one last look before I started to walk again. I heard a car pull up in front of the house. I looked back, seeing a teenage boy jumping out. He was in basketball shorts and had on a jersey. He waved whoever was in the car by and shut the door. For a moment as he turned, his eyes connected with my own. They were a bright blue I could tell, just by standing where I was. His hair was jet black like my own. I could tell he looked just like his father, as I did like my mother.

He offered a small smile before running to the front door. I let out a small sigh, turning around and beginning down the street again. This was all I needed. I finally got to take a glimpse who my real family was. I got to talk to my mother and hear her sweet, calm voice. I’ll keep it in my mind forever. I’ll never let the memory of this day go.

They got my letter, something I written this morning in the car. I knew it was useless to bother on what exactly to write, because I knew they would be happy either way. They would know their daughter was alive. Not dead as they believed eighteen years ago.

I also realized not long after finding out about them why the nickname Louis came up for me sounded so familiar. I learned that they used to call me ‘kitten’ instead of Audrey, because of my birthmark. I realized that after visiting the grave they had for me. Our little kitten, who never got the chance to grow.

To think I could remember them calling me that, it was something. I was glad I remembered though. Maybe remembering helped me become the person I was today. Not just them, but Louis too.

I was grateful. Nothing was going to change that. Even if death was going to stare at me in the face again.
