Numb is Normal
SAM
The morning arises and the funeral comes. Harry in a suit is surprising look but I shrug it off as I get into the car. I'm not ready to say my final goodbye but fate pushes me to do so.
Nearly half of the campus is present as Harry and I fight to find Mrs. Branson and Reece. "Sam! Harry!" I hear Kate's voice sound. "I didn't know Cade had this many people would cared about him."
"Neither did I." Harry groans.
I sigh, looking past the long line of mourners.
"Come on, let's get in line." Harry suggests.
I nod and follow Harry.
I search the line finding Blair standing awkwardly by herself. I grab his arm and pull him along with me as we approach Blair.
"Sam! How are you doing?" She asks ushering me into the line.
"I'm ok."
She smiles at Harry as he steps in behind us.
No more conversation is held as the line continues to move forward. Minutes later and Cade's body comes into view. I take a deep breath, slowly walking towards his casket. Blair steps to the side presenting support. I feel Harry's hand hit the small of my back as I gently place my hand upon Cade's. I hear Harry take a deep breath as I try to contain my tears.
"I love you, Cade." Is all I manage to say before falling into Blair's embrace.
The rest of the day I feel off. Showing no real emotion, instead I feel outside of my body watching myself watch this procession go on. Blair constantly asks if I'm alright only receiving a nod. I wait until the final person leaves before going up to the casket at its final resting place. I place my hand upon the marbled texture and feel my heart drop to my stomach. Knowing this is the last time I will "see" him is tearing me apart.
"Sam, I think we should go." I nod, kissing my hand before placing it back on the casket. Harry carefully escorts me back to the car where I finally breathe. He looks at me before starting the car. I make for another long awkward drive as we make our way to the parking lot of the complex. Reece consumes Harry on the phone as my heels clicking against the concrete is the only thing I choose to hear. I head straight to my room, falling back onto the bed. I can hear Harry end his phone conversation before softly padding into the room. I feel his weight fall upon the bed with an ending sigh.
"I know this is a stupid question." His accent rings. "But, are you ok?"
"It's just going to take time for both of us."
He nods, placing one hand behind his head. "You know a lot of people are worried about you."
"They shouldn't be. I have a pretty good guardian." I poke.
Harry lightly laughs. "It's the least I could do for Cade."
"Yeah. I knew you two had a pact."
"Of course." Harry shrugs. "He didn't want anything to happen to you and neither did I." He pauses. "Neither do I, I should say."
I sit up, checking out Harry's outfit again. "You clean up nicely."
"Well, thanks." He smirks.
I nod. "If you don't mind H, I'm going to get changed."
"Nope, I don't mind." He says smugly.
"Harry." I scorn.
"Fine, fine. I am going to find us some food." He informs before shutting the door behind him.
I change out of the dress I'll more than likely never wear again and opt for meeting up with Harry in the kitchen.
"We have steak, leftover pizza, a half eaten hoagie, cereal, and a half carton of ice cream." "Looks like I'll be needing to go shopping. I just haven't gotten around to it. I--"
"Stop. It's ok." Harry smiles. "I'm in the mood for cereal, what about you?"
I smile. "Sure."
We sit and eat a whole box of cereal not exactly sure about the milk. We both agree that we will head back to class Monday and try to get back to as much normalcy as we can.
Monday rolls around and Harry is already hopping around outside of my door. My alarm screaming at me to wake is accompanied with a couple knocks as I slip out of bed.
"Are you awake?" Harry asks opening the door.
"Yes, yes." I groan. "Let me get dressed."
"Shit, ok sassy." He zips. "Get some coffee after for that tude."
"H!" I whine. He closes the door leaving me to get dressed for class. I zip through my morning routine and meet Harry in the kitchen who readily hands me a cup of coffee.
"I'm not much a morning person."
He laughs. "Noted. You ready?"
"I am."
Classes absolutely suck as I'm left missing Cade and I's routines. I can tell Harry is trying his hardest to support me and hisself and I feel horrible for making him take on that role.
"Hey, let's go grab some dinner." Harry surprises.
"I'm not hungry, H. You go head."
"Oh." He hums. "You ok?"
"Just a rough day." I confess.
"Come on, I know something that will cheer you up."
"Harry, I'm not hungry."
"I'm not taking 'no' for an answer, now get in my car." He pushes.
"Well you are my ride home."
"Oh." He stops. "That's right! Now you definitely don't have a choice."
I roll my eyes and get into the car.
We drive a little way before pulling into a small ice cream place. He's quick to get out, waving me on from outside the car. I slide out and join H.
"Get whatever you want." He informs.
I do just that, getting my favorite. A twisty cone. Harry pokes fun at my choice before inviting me over the provided wooden benches. We tell of our days and complain about the amount of work that professors are still giving us.
"So, feeling better?" I laugh.
"Yes. Thank you."
"Yep." He nods proudly. "You're welcome."
We head back to the apartment, crashing on the couch watching endless reruns of the Big Bang Theory. Harry excuses himself to bed after the 10th episode, calling it a night. I turn the television off and sit there, coming down from the seemingly hectic day. Maybe things would be ok after all. Maybe Harry was my saving grace and that leaves me scared to death.
