What Makes You Beautiful

I can feel your heart inside of mine

For your eyes only, I show you my heart
For when you're lonely and forget who you are
I'm missing half of me when we're apart
Now you know me, for your eyes only
For your eyes only
‘If I Could Fly’ – One Direction

Bella's POV

Heathrow Airport came into view as the cab turned off the road and into the large carpark. She looked out of the side window, the day was slightly overcast but beams of sunlight hit the ground. Tears threatened to well up in her eyes but she blinked them away. She didn’t want to the cab driver to see her cry.

The cab stopped at the drop-off area and the driver helped her by getting her suitcase out of the boot. Bella thanked him, adjusting her carry-on bag around her shoulder, taking the handle out of her suitcase and rolling it behind her as she stepped through the doors into the airport.

It was 11:55 in the morning when the plane took off from Heathrow. Bella was back in business class and stretched her legs out in front of her, crossing her ankles over as she looked out of the window. They were at a high altitude and London was gone below, a layer of clouds covering the country she had spent almost nine days in. Once the plane had settled, Bella unclicked her seatbelt and leaned her head back against the soft seat. She closed her eyes and remembered her farewell to Harry only three hours earlier.

She would be lying if she said she wasn’t upset about leaving. Because she was. Leaving Harry was one of the hardest things she’d ever had to do. Her carry-on bag was in her hand as she walked to the front door, her suitcase up against the wall next to it. She placed her bag on the floor and stood up, pulling the handle of her suitcase out, ready to drag it along the ground outside. She felt a hand wrap around her forearm, the contact gentle but also hard. She turned around and found herself looking into a pair of green eyes.

Bella loved his eyes. The way he looked at her with them did something to her. She would miss everything about Harry but his eyes were angelic and so unique. She would miss looking into his eyes and have that feeling of shivers running down her spine.

“Goodbye, Bella.”

She had dreaded this moment ever since he first kissed her. Bella hated goodbyes, all the time, but saying goodbye to Harry was definitely high on the list of things not to look forward to. His hand was still on her forearm, his long fingers locking their grip. Bella swallowed deeply and hesitantly placed her hand on his chest.

“Goodbye, Harry.”

She felt his other hand cup her neck, his fingers gripping the roots of her hair at the base of her neck. Bella could only stare at him as he closed the distance between them with his lips. She felt a rush when his mouth met hers and she couldn’t control herself. Bella wrapped both of her arms around his neck, pulling him close, never wanting to let go. She could feel tears starting to blossom behind her closed eyes but she fought them and pressed her lips harder against Harry’s. His arm had moved to lock itself around her waist, his other hand still resting on the back of her neck. Bella wished the kiss could last longer but she didn’t want to miss her flight.

She reluctantly broke her lips away from Harry’s and kissed his cheek warmly before pulling him into a hug. It was like they were one person, the way they were hugging each other. They melded into a single statue, arms locked around one another. Bella felt Harry bury his face in her flowing hair, his arms tight around her torso, keeping her close against his body. She breathed in his cologne, his distinctive smell, the softness of his hair. Bella didn’t want to let him go. She truly didn’t want to. But thankfully, it wasn’t her who let go.

Harry pulled back to give her a warm smile, which made her heart lift. He bumped her chin affectionately with his hand, his eyes shining. She managed to keep the tears at bay. For now.

“Look after yourself, Harry. And have fun on the tour.”

“I will. Look after yourself too, love.”

“Do you think we’ll ever Skype?” Bella asked.

“Of course. I’ll need to look at your beautiful face when I hear your voice.”

She felt her cheeks blush and that made Harry smile again. He wrapped his left arm around her shoulder and drew her in for a second embrace. She buried her face in his chest, moving one arm around his neck while the other one circled his torso. Tears fell silently down her cheeks and her hands shook slightly. Bella wouldn’t be this close to Harry for a long time. She wouldn’t feel his arms around her, the sound of his heart beating, the warmth of his breath, his cheek resting on her head as he hugged her tightly. His lips left a kiss on her forehead and Bella tiled her head up to look at him. And before she knew it, his lips were on hers again.

She tugged on his curls, sighing as he kissed her for one last time. Bella savoured the taste of his lips, the way he moaned when she touched his hair, his hands tightening on her body. She would remember each touch, each caress, each kiss. Bella breathed deep when the kiss ended. She looked up at him through glittering eyes and managed to smile. He smiled back and an image of that was seared into her mind forever. Bella removed her arms from his body and turned to the side, slinging her carry-on bag onto her left shoulder and taking hold of the suitcase handle with her right hand. She walked those few steps to the front door and opened it, letting the fresh air inside.

A cab waited for her on the side of the street but Bella couldn’t move. She didn’t want to leave. She didn’t want to leave Harry alone. But he wasn’t alone. Louis was here. Bella had already said goodbye to him before, earning a hug and a kiss on the cheek from him, which she gladly returned. Bella was fond of Louis and counted him as a wonderful man and a great friend to have around. It helped that his number was now saved in her phone. Once again, Ashley would be so jealous. Louis had retreated upstairs, allowing Bella and Harry to have their private farewell, which both of them were grateful for.

Bella looked at Harry who stood just next to her. He placed his hand on the small of her back and kissed her temple.

“Call me when you get home.” He whispered.

“I will.” Bella whispered back. She gave Harry one last kiss on the corner of his mouth and walked out the front door, still blinking away tears. She turned around briefly to look at him one last time. He gave her that dimpled smile she loved so much and blew a kiss to her. Her heart skipped a beat but she managed to blow him a kiss back before heading over to the cab, leaving the young Englishman she desired so badly behind.

Bella didn’t know she had been crying until she opened her eyes. Tears rolled down her hot pink cheeks as she sniffled. The beautiful view out of the window did nothing for her. The only view she wanted to see was Harry. Harry wearing those black skinny jeans, his hair loose and curly, his green eyes full of life and his smile wide, opening his arms to greet her and placing a passionate kiss on her lips. Bella didn’t know when she’d see him again. Weeks? Months? What if I don’t see him for a year? She wanted to be with him because he was no longer a friend. He was her boyfriend and now, they were going to be in separate countries, oceans between them, preventing them from seeing each other often. Bella already missed his touch, his smell, his voice, everything about him.

She wiped away her tears with her hands, her cheeks warm underneath her palms. She took a deep breath and decided to take a nap. Bella didn’t have any appetite for food yet. She took long gulps of the glass of water that sat in the cup holder next to her before pushing the top-half of the seat back and turning to face the window. She balled her hands up to her chest and slowly closed her eyes, dreaming about the Englishman with green eyes she had already fallen for.

Bella’s plane journey had been good. She landed in Sydney and embraced her mother when she exited the arrival gate. She got a few double takes from people who had obviously seen her in magazines and on the Internet. Thankfully, she wasn’t harassed by anyone and arrived at the car with her mother safely.

“Where’s Ash?” She asked when she hopped into the passenger seat.

“She’s staying over at a friend’s place. I’m going to pick her up tomorrow afternoon after school.” Jo answered, turning the engine on and reversing out of her parking space.

“Good, I’ve missed her.” Bella smiled. Even though her little sister could be as annoying as hell, she loved her and enjoyed spending time with her. Ashley looked up to her a great deal and Bella always wanted to fulfil the responsibility of being a role model to Ashley, to earn that admirable look in her sister’s eyes.

The car turned out of the carpark and onto the main road, joining other cars, the glow of the orange streetlights causing shadows to dance over Bella’s face. God, it’s good to be home. She thought with a smile, leaning back to relax in the familiar car seat.

“So, darling, how was London?”

“It was fantastic. So different but so beautiful. The monuments are so spectacular in the flesh and the countryside is also gorgeous.” Bella said as images of Big Ben, the London Eye and Holmes Chapel flashed in her head. Memories she would remember for the rest of her life.

“And Harry?” Jo asked, a gentle smile playing on her lips. Bella looked at her mother, who briefly glanced at her. Bella rubbed her neck before returning her hand to her knee.

“What about Harry?”

“Darling, you’re blushing.”

Am I? God…
She could feel the blood hot underneath her cheeks and realised she was blushing. Just the mention of his name… I must be hooked on him… She didn’t know if it was a good thing or a bad thing. Bella recalled all the times Harry made her blush. His loving compliments, the way he kissed her, his fingers on her skin. His touch set her on fire and she already craved it. Bella looked out of the windscreen, cars passing on the lanes beside them and on the opposite side of the road.

“Well?” Her mother urged. Bella didn’t know how to answer properly so she just told her mother what she felt.

“Mum…he’s incredible. Really. Every day, he was so sweet and kind. And funny. I always felt content with him. I’ve never felt this way before. I miss him terribly already.” Which reminds me, I need to call him when I get home. I promised him.

“Bella, darling, I couldn’t be happier for you. I mean, it’s odd seeing pictures of you on the Internet, but I am happy for you.” Jo smiled.

“Mum…you don’t believe the stuff some articles say, right? That I’m just a fling?” Bella asked.

“No, of course not! I know that’s all false. What you’ve told me is the truth. Harry seems like a wonderful young man. I look forward to meeting him one day.”

Meet the Frosts. God, what an experience that would be!
Bella cringed at the thought. But then, she knew Harry would be OK. I’ve faced his family. He’ll have to face mine at some point. Maybe. If we’re still a couple. I hope we are. I don’t want to lose him… Her thoughts turned negative as Harry on tour entered her mind, having a one night stand or kissing another girl far more beautiful than her. Will he ever cheat on me? No, he’ll be faithful! Bella, don’t worry, he only wants you. Bella looked out of the side window, her eyelids fluttering, her jetlag slowly starting to take over.

“Yeah.” Was all she could say.

Harry's POV

It was 11 o’clock in the morning when his phone started to ring. Louis sat next to him, a pad of paper in one hand and he twirled a pencil in the fingers of his other hand. He looked at Harry, who swung his legs off the couch and stood up, walking out of the living room.

“Say hi to her for me, mate.” Louis called with a smile. He knew who was calling Harry. He wasn’t stupid. The moment his phone started to ring, Harry’s eyes had lit up. Louis went back to concentrating on song writing while Harry walked up the stairs, answering the call quickly.

“Bella.”

Hi, Harry. I’m back home now. The trip was fine.

It was so good to hear her voice. She had been gone for just over 24 hours but he already missed her. He couldn’t hold her in his arms anymore. He couldn’t kiss her for as long as he wanted. All he had were Skype, phone calls and texts.

“That’s great to hear. I already miss you.”

Harry heard her breathing on the other end of the line. He waited for her to respond as he went into the bedroom Bella stayed in. The bed was neatly made and the walk-in wardrobe was empty again. It was like no-one had been there at all. But Harry could smell Bella’s fragrance on the sheets and on the pillows. It reminded him of the silkiness of her hair, the sparkle of her hazel eyes, the feeling of her warm body in his arms, holding her close as they slept together, dreaming alongside each other.

I miss you too, Harry.

He smiled at her response. He lowered himself down to sit on the end of the bed, moving some of his hair behind his left ear.

“I hope you didn’t encounter any paparazzi when you landed.”

No, just a few stares from people. They probably recognised me. Why did you think there were paparazzi when I landed?

“Well, there’s pictures of you leaving my house yesterday morning.”

Oh…

Harry himself had only found out a few hours ago; his sister had texted him. There were photos of Bella walking out of the driveway, opening the boot of the cab to put her luggage inside, getting into the back of the cab before driving off. Obviously, those pictures had gone viral. Fans wanted to know why Bella left and how long it would be before she and Harry would be spotted together again. Even Harry didn’t know. With the tour and production of the new album, it could be many weeks before he saw Bella again. It could even be months. Harry hoped it wouldn’t be that long. Bella’s silence worried him so he spoke.

“Bella, love…? Are you OK?”

Yeah, I’m fine. I guess I’m not that surprised.

“I just hope they leave you alone. You have your own life and you’re entitled to privacy.”

I’ll be alright. It’s my sister who tends to invade my privacy.
Bella giggled. Harry loved that sound. It brought him joy.

“Has she asked you about us?”

No, not yet. She’s having a sleepover with a friend. She’ll be home tomorrow afternoon so I’ll have to prepare myself for a full-on interrogation.

“What are you going to tell her?”

She’ll ask me about everything but I won’t tell her everything. She’s only 12, after all. She doesn’t need to know everything about us.

Harry could hear a sultry tone in her voice. He’d be lying if he said it didn’t turn him on. Harry also didn’t want Bella’s little sister to know everything. The way they spooned, the way they kissed, the way they made out. That was all between them and only them. Precious moments spent together that would forever be etched in Harry’s heart.

“I agree, love.”

So…what are you doing now?

“Writing with Louis.”

How’s it going?

“Very well. I finished If I Could Fly with the help of two other writers.”

Really? That’s great! It’s a beautiful song. I still can’t believe you wrote it about me.

“Why’s that, beautiful?”

Because…I’ve never had a guy ever do something that romantic for me. It does make me feel…special. I mean, a song written about me. By you. Do you realise how jealous your fans are going to be?

“They don’t have to know it’s about you.” Harry said.

Harry, Directioners analyse song lyrics like crazy. Believe me, I know. My sister is one.

“Does she know? About the song?”

No, I didn’t want to tell her over the phone when I was in London with you. I’ll tell her tomorrow. She’s going to go absolutely crazy!

“Well, you deserve to have a song written about you. You’re special to me, Bella, and I wish you were still here with me.”

I wish that too. But you have Louis.

“I can’t hold him in my arms at night. I can’t sleep with him. I can’t kiss him.”

The Larry shippers would love that, you know.
Bella giggled again and Harry smiled.

“Never going to happen.”

I’m sure you’ve fallen asleep in the same bed as Louis at some point.

“Only when we’re tired from touring or if we’re completely smashed. Don’t you dare tell that to anyone.” Harry mocked threatened.

Your secret is safe with me, Harry.

Harry imagined Bella smiling, her eyes glittering fresh hazel, turning green in a brighter light. He pictured the beautiful shade of pink her tanned cheeks turned when he said something sweet to her. He wished he could see that again. Right now.

“Louis says hi, by the way.”

Say hi back to him. And good luck with the writing.

“Thank you, love.”

Uh, I have to go now. Mum’s got dinner ready and I’m kind of jetlagged.

Harry wished he could stay on the phone with Bella for many more hours but he understood that she needed to rest after her long trip.

“OK, beautiful. Eat healthy and rest well. I’ll talk to you soon.”

I look forward to it.

“Me too.”

Bye, Harry.

The line cut off just after Harry wished Bella a good night sleep. He hoped when she slept, she’d be dreaming about him. Because Harry would certainly be dreaming about her.

Notes

If I Could Fly is definitely one of my favourite songs One Direction have ever released and probably my favourite song on Made In The A.M. It will heavily inspire the rest of this story.

A random side note: which gif makes you smile more? :) (I couldn’t choose!)
