Icing on the Cake

Calum and I sat in his basement, watching the TV, waiting for our news story to start during the six o’clock news. Finally, the anchor led us in.

“Discrimination at a local high school has led to outrage in the student body, and even the world wide web. Martha Kurry reports.”

It then cut to Martha standing outside the school. “I am standing here where two gay high school students who wished to go to prom together were refused tickets to grand march, and even disinvited from prom itself. The two youths made a video about it and posted it on YouTube, explaining what the principal had told them. This video now has over two million views, even though it has been online for only a matter of hours.”

“Yeah, twenty-four hours.” I said. I looked back to the TV. It then showed our interview where we explained that we simply told everyone in the school that we were disinvited from prom.

“This dis-invitation has caused an outrage among the student body, and many students have been demanding refunds to prom. Others refuse to buy tickets. Here we see students’ cell phone videos showing the mayhem outside the principal’s office, as well as the principal saying that prom is not something the school has to put on.”

The TV then showed the homemade videos.

“So, will the student body create enough pressure to let the two students go to prom? Only time will tell. Martha Kurry, six o’clock news.”

After watching that, neither Calum nor I had a lot to say about it. At 6:30, I gave Calum a hug and got into my brother’s car, ready to go live with him for a while.

“Hey Ben.” I said. “Thanks for…this.” Not knowing how to summarize my situation into one word.

“Luke,” Ben said, “Why did you attack the school online and on the news?”
