Sins of the Heroes Fallen

Prologue - Liquid Death

For a moment the city of Fallen is still. Nothing moves, breaths or sounds. The whole juncture stood frozen in time; ageless and beautiful. Silent.

The air was dead, the lights didn’t change their glow on the too cluttered together buildings and a man, young, stood steadfast and just as lifeless. His gaze roamed the vast destruction of a place long forgotten with shadows from the darkness above that hid his identity.

Seconds passed into minutes and still his long slender figure was poised in natural calmness despite the urge that grew within him. He needed his release and he needed it soon but the light from afar kept his eye fixed to it. Like a moth to a flame, it was stunning but still just as dangerous.

He was high up the tallest building in the South End and protected under the night skies from passersby and visibility of the sin he was about to commit.

Leaning one foot up over the edge of the small block of crumbling cement, his other was planted firmly on the flat surface of the high rooftop, still staring, still observing but gradually he came back to his senses and hummed out a whispered sigh. So quiet that it was never heard at all.

“I come up here often, you know? Quite a bit,” He spoke for the first time in hours. He needed to let the urge simmer in his veins, it was the most exciting part of the game to him and he mustn’t rush it. He needs to feed off the looming fear that’s suddenly spiked in the air. He could practically feel the euphoria and he closes his eyes to control himself. “I use this time to think about a lot of things. Like life. Life is amazing, isn’t it? Beautiful even but how many people stop to acknowledge the thought? Personally doll face? I’m here to purely entertain the idea, a false hope I guess you could say and something to get you to wonder what happens next.” His left lip twitched into a microscopic smirk, the true emotion showing more in his deep brown eyes. After all, he didn’t want to give anything away.

When he placed his foot down next to the other again he turned and just like that, everything came back into focus. The wind gently picked up, cars off in the distance honked, different lights in the far off buildings flickered and finally, muffled screams were heard directly behind him.

When he turned, he did so slow and seductive but his appearance was anything but and the sight alone made the frightened girl tied against the brick pillar scream into the tape sealing her mouth.

“Shh, shh, shh, doll face. It’s completely normal,” He chuckled.

Sickly black lines contrast to death white skin was enough to give anyone nightmares but the warning bell that immediately rang to the victim were the slow growing needles that were protruding out underneath his fingernails.

She screamed against her gag again and tried to struggle against the ropes that held her firm.

He frowned in mock concern, cocking his head to the side slightly like a dog whose attention had been caught in momentary interest.

“Aw, what’s wrong? Do I look that bad?”

The girl nodded her head, tears spilling down her face in fear. The smell of it was exotic, practically heavenly to his heightened senses.

He smiled then, the ink black veins flowing slick with the sickness that raged inside him.

“I have been rather impolite, haven’t I? Why, you’re my company this evening and I haven’t even introduced myself. How very ignorant of me. My name is Gideon. Gideon Hillshaw.” He took a few steps forward, his hand outstretched in a feigned friendly greet, the needles under his fingernails already extending out their full three inches.

She screamed again and this time he was by her side in a flash, kneeling down and carefully but coarsely ripping the tape off her lips. Underneath the sticky film the girl’s red lipstick were smeared and her eyes ran black with the trails of heavy applied mascara.

“What’s your name baby doll?” He tried to put her at ease but seeing the 6’3 tall monstrosity with the psychotically calm persona and tense but soft jawline didn’t help matters. The icing on the cake was the sandy brown moose-like hair, a cute boy cut that would have suited if it weren’t for the thick black veins and his complexion that continued to ashen. Soon, if he didn’t release – he would lose it completely.

An unfortunate part of being cordial in nature was Gideon’s continued politeness. It was more for his victim’s benefit than his own but he thrived on waiting and the right time to strike.

He smiled, the sickness of black veins pulsating and moving like the others were unnerving and unnatural but the girl couldn’t look away.

“Come on, babe. I’m dying to know your name, please?” He sardonically begged, his slender fingers coming tip to tip with his others, the needles clinking together as he did and that’s what the girl’s fearful gray eyes remained focused on.

He noticed her stare and followed, chortling.

“Oh, those? Yeah, they’re a downright damned curse if you ask me but such as the paths we choose, hm?” He continued on conversationally.

“W-who are you? W-what a-are you?” The girl trembled.

“I told you already, little bird, I’m Gideon Hillshaw. Most only know me as LD though.” He shrugged, his voice smooth and non-threatening. That was his whole thing, he had a sweet undertone that never held a threat – he didn’t even know if it was possible as his voice never developed any deep octave. Hell, he lost track with all the times he was told he should take up singing. After the church fiasco years ago with Neuro-note, he didn’t want to chance that some other unwanted power might develop inside him and he only had two main ones he was aware of and two was fucking plenty.

“I-I’m Tiffany. P-please let me go. I promise I won’t tell. I do, I promise.” She pleaded, lessening her struggles to look around the crumbling foundation for some sort of escape or a hero that would be passing by to save her.

As if reading her thoughts and the inhale of breath, Gideon slammed his hand over her mouth and clicked his tongue between his teeth in a short tsk.

“Darling, please don’t bring trouble here. I don’t want to run right now. I mean do you know what a bitch that is? It’s like running and getting caught by Robocop for the effort. The only good hero around here is a dead one and I will fuck them up if needed and we wouldn’t want that now would we, Tiff?” He warned, groaning mutely from the pain forming in his stomach.

Tiffany shook her head around his hand, a sob absorbing into the fleshy gag, careful to mind the needles. He preferred to inject them in the chest cavity for optimal pleasure.

“Good girl. Now, I’m going to take my hand away and you’re going to remain quiet.” Gideon hummed, his tone again light and playful.

Tiffany nodded and he released his hand under her confirmation.

“W-what are you? You’re n-not human.” She cried, trying to slow her panicked breath.

“I am, I’m just super human…sorta. I’m a villain, we tend to own the show here in Fallen. Now, beautiful, I’m going to explain why you’ve been my company the past few hours and that’s because I require something very special from you, an exchange of sorts I guess you could say.”

Tiffany didn’t respond, her doe grays just continued to stare at her captor in deep fear.

“I-I don’t have a-anything. Please, let m-me go!”

Gideon’s lips thinned into a line and his eyes narrowed.

“Tiffy bird? Your stuttering has become really annoying now. So, no more talky just listening, hm?”

Tiffany bit her lip and looked up to the night sky to see if there were any others that would happen by but Gideon knew this side of town was rarely visited by the goody gushes that called themselves heroes. No hero was innocent and the only thing separating them were the unspoken rules that they were required to follow. Not that many of them did.

He followed her gaze just to make sure because one never knows.

“No skies tonight. Just a deep dark black hole – void of life, dead of heroes.” He confirmed her despair with a smile, one of his hands coming in front of her face so she could see the needles a little closer.

It was a soft breezy night in Fallen but overly quiet. Quiet in a troubled city was never a good sign.

“As I was saying before Tiff, most call me LD or Liquid Death. Have you heard of me?” He questioned, positioning his index needle on her chin, dragging it down but not puncturing.

She whimpered but remained statue still.

“Aw, don’t worry, I’m not going to stab you there. That would defeat the purpose but I must admit, your whimpering is music to my ears. Do it again for me baby, moan for me. Make me happy.” He gritted, becoming hard under pressure, the pain almost to an uncontrollable level. His stomach filled with anticipation that only added on to the discomfort.

Tiffany’s shuttered at his vulgarity but that was all she could muster out.

“You have heard of me then, yes?” He tried forcing her to confirm by pressing a little more.

Tiffany shook her head slowly, never breaking contact with the ashen, veiny young man.

“Oooh, wonderful! Then this will be a treat. You see, Tiffany; I’ve had this cursed power for nearly three years now. I got them when I was twenty. I was a drug addict you see and my life was about chasing a high. No parents to speak of, raised on the streets, exedra, exedra, blah and blah and blah. Anyhow, I got some newfangled shit and it was pure heroin. I mean, fuck, one little drop and you were high for a day, sitting in your own urine type of high. It was that powerful. I did not know this. I was told ‘small amount, it backs a wallop’. So I did half a spoonful. Boy, you want to talk about a trip you never come down from. In fact, about six hours after I took it I started convulsing. My body was dying, overdosing from 90 times the amount it would take to kill someone,” He closed his eyes, remembering that day vividly.

“I was convulsing for an hour. I couldn’t stop, couldn’t scream – couldn’t do anything but beg silently for it to end. Not exactly what I had in mind for a good time that’s for sure. If I had only known what was really happening. You see, I was dying. Actually let me rephrase that. My body was being rewired. The heroin coursing through my system was absorbing all of my blood, my powers were activating and because my meat suit was struggling to keep itself alive, my powers activated on the way they needed to make that happen. In short, I seek people to help me release. That is why you’re here and I promise you it won’t hurt a bit. In fact, you’re going to feel so good you won’t even care after five seconds.” Gideon smiled, his deep brown pools twinkling.

“I-I still don’t understand.” Tiffany stuttered, her long bleach blonde hair whipping gently in the breeze, tensing against her restraints once again.

“You will.”

With that his left hand went to the right side of her chest and before she could blink, the jagged needles slipped into the intended target without hassle, granting him his release.

Tiffany let out a straggled cry but it only lasted a second. After that; all she felt was the fluid from his needles spill the potent drug, pumping it through her system so fast that she slipped out of consciousness not even ten seconds later.

When the girl fell unconscious he quickly punched his other set of needles in the left side of her body or more precisely, into her heart.

Gideon closed his eyes in euphoric bliss, his ashen white skin beginning to slowly gain a healthy peach like ivory color. As seconds passed to a minute, his sickly black veins started turning red and slowly disappeared back beneath his flesh, no longer visibly underneath dead white skin. He looked healthy and the blissful feeling of the copper liquid high was an added bonus. Since his form no longer responded to drugs as it used to, his only option for a high was the release of the constantly produced heroin that ran through him and the absorption of blood. That was his drug and he wasn’t giving it up for nothing.
