Anything Goes

chapter 2

Three hours later I was about to pass out after eating half of the pizza and a decent amount of mint chocolate chip ice cream. I had just finished watching The Wolf of Wall Street when a loud knock on the door startled me.

I must have taken too long to answer it because who ever was there knocked again. I had no idea who the hell it was seeing as all my friends were either home for the weekend or out partying.

I skeptically open the door to find Harry standing there with a smirk on his face.

Why is he up here?
I thought to myself.

“Uhh, hey,” I said, but it came out more like a question.

“Got any of that pizza left?” Harry asks while inviting himself into my room.

I’m so surprised he’s here that I don’t even answer him or object when he walks past me and plops himself down on the futon.

He must detect my nerves because he chuckles and pats the spot next to him. “How is your movie night going?” he asks as I sit down (leaving plenty of space between us).

“Good… I was just debating if I could stay awake for another one.” I decide to get up and grab the leftover pizza in the fridge. “Do you really want some?”

I might as well go along with this, I decide.

“Hell yeah! I’m starving,” he says. I grab a plate, but he stops me by taking the box from my hands. “This is fine.” His charming smile makes my stomach flutter.

“So what’s on next?”

“I was thinking about Dark Knight,” I tell him. "You good with that?”

“Love that movie,” he nods with a mouthful of cold pizza.

“I do have a microwave if you want to heat that up,” I giggle. Yeah, giggle. Who am I?

He looks over to me and shakes his head. “Cold pizza is the best.”

“Alright,” I smile and start the movie.

I sit back down on the futon and focus my attention on the TV. Harry eats the rest of the pizza quickly before making himself comfortable. I try to keep my eyes on the movie, but every now and then I feel his eyes on me and my body goes warm.

The movie is almost over when I realize I hadn’t even been watching any of it. The whole time I was trying to figure out what the hell this means. Is Harry trying to be my friend or what? Did he just feel bad for me because I told him I was going to be alone on a Friday night?

By the end of the movie I still hadn’t figured it out. I was also dreading the moment when the movie did end because then I’d be forced to talk to him.

I could talk to guys; I’m not the type to freeze up or get nervous, but something about Harry made me feel so different. It was like my brain was on autopilot and making all decisions for me.

Thankfully he was the one to initiate conversation once I turned the TV off.

“So what are you doing tomorrow?”

I sat back down on the couch and folded my legs under myself. “Nothing that I know of… All of my friends are home for the weekend so it might just be another movie night.”

“You should come to my place, then,” he continued hopefully, "It’s my buddy’s birthday, we’re having a bunch of people over to celebrate.”

I could already seeing that being a very awkward situation; going to a party without my friends sounded like a horrible idea. But I also wanted to get to know Harry more, and it seemed like he felt the same way.

“Yeah, I’m in.” I tried my best not to sound to eager.

“Awesome.” Harry stands up and pulls his iPhone out of his pocket before handing it to me.

“Type in your number. I’ll come pick you up tomorrow around 9 so you don’t have to walk. It’s kind of a long walk from campus.”

I prayed he didn’t notice my shaking hands as I nodded and entered my number.

“Great,” he smiled as I handed back the phone. “I’ll see you tomorrow then. Thanks for the pizza.”

“No problem.”

“Good night, Evvie.”

There was that Evvie again.

“Night, Harry.”

The next morning I was up by nine and eager for the sun to go down. I was happy because the day flew by like I’d hope it would, and before I knew it, it was already eight. I had spent much more time on my hair and makeup than I care to admit, and after changing my outfit a million times I finally decided on something. I ended up in skinny jeans and a loose, low-cut tank top and flannel button-up. Casual yet flattering without trying too hard.

I sprayed myself with my favorite perfume, picked out a pair of boots and waited for Harry to text me saying he was here.

My nerves were through the roof, but I was also really excited to have a few drinks with some new people… And spend some time with Harry.

Before I knew it, he texted me that he was outside and I was on my way down to meet him. I wasn’t surprised when I saw him sitting behind the wheel of a black truck. He just seemed like the type of guy to have a big pickup.

“Hey,” Harry smiled as I got in the passenger seat.

“Hey,” I smiled back.

“You ready to have some fun?” He asked as he pulled out of the parking lot.

“Definitely,” I honestly agreed.

We rode in silence for most of the way, but it wasn’t awkward because the drive was quick.
“So Derek is the one we’re celebrating. He turns 20 on Monday. Should be a good turn out,” Harry explained as he pulled into the driveway.

All I could manage was a nod as my stomach churned. I was starting to get nervous. I need a drink… or five.

“Well let’s go join the party!”

We walked inside the house to about fifteen guys hovering around a beer pong table as music played in the background.

“Ladies,” Harry called out to the guys, “this is Evelyn. Evvie, these are some of the douche bags I call friends.”

I laughed when his friends cursed at Harry after his introduction.

They all said hi to me before Harry lead me back into the kitchen. “What are you drinking tonight? I got Svedka, Malibu, whiskey or tequila.”

“Damn, you got it all!” I laughed. I was silently grateful he offered me a drink seeing as I forgot my own alcohol. I was so caught up on getting ready...

“Okay wait, let me guess…”

I smiled and let him guess what I’d drink. Honestly I’d drink whatever, so I was just going to let him decide for me.

“First, you’re gonna take a tequila shot with me. Then… hmmm… Jack and coke?”

“Sounds good to me!”

“Ahh that’s my kind of girl.”

The night was going really well-much better than expected.

Everyone at the house was great. I had met a majority of the people there and was really happy Harry invited me. He stayed by my side so I was never awkwardly alone and made sure I was having a good time. I felt comfortable around his friends, and I was having a great time. People were playing beer pong, dancing and laughing, and I was the perfect amount of drunk to finally be relaxed. I kept hoping Harry would invite me back so I could bring the girls along; they’d love it here too. Thinking that made me miss them, so I pulled out my phone and texted them.

EVELYN: Soooooo I may or may not be at Harry's (hot security guard Harry) house right now… ;)

Within a minute, they all replied. I had told them about the whole water bottle situation last night and it turns out they’ve had an eye on the hot security guard too.

CALLIE: WTF! HOW? WHY?

ERIKA: YEAH WTF!!!! DETAILS PLZZZ

IZZY: EV!!!! why does this happen the weekend we’re all gone? :’(

I laughed a little to myself with excitement.

EVELYN:
We’ve been talking this weekend… He invited me over because they’re having a party for his friend’s birthday. I’ll tell you guys more when you get back!

I ignored the rest of their texts about how jealous they were and walked over to where Harry was standing in the kitchen. I just wanted to have fun and soak in the night.
