Part 4

Harry:

Curiosity. That was simply the only emotion that I could feel right now. In my imagination I saw a small black cat wondering into the middle of a busy street; just to inspect a fallen bird on the asphalt. I could envision the small cat getting ran over by a large car, possibly even a van. And currently I was becoming that cat; that curious little feline who wandered into danger to view a bird. However in this case it wasn’t a bird. No. In this case it was a woman, a beautiful blonde with eyes like an ocean; vast and blue.

She was stumbling on her feet, and teetering when she stood still. I could smell the alcohol on her clothes and breath from nearly three feet away. She was gone. Her words were stuttered, fumbled out like she had lost control over her tongue and it was just a dead hunk of tissue in her mouth. There was no way I could allow her to continue to fumble around on her own without helping her back home.

I felt an odd reason to protect her, even though I didn’t know her for anything.

She looked flushed, like the alcohol had risen her body temperature. She needed to be taken care of, nurtured. Why was such a young girl so intoxicated? She clung to my arm as I helped her begin walking again, following her directions towards her flat.

“What’d you say Chlo?” I questioned turning my head to look down at her.

She was stammering her words, throwing her arm out in the direction we needed to go.

“Go… Right…” She managed and I complied seeing that the alcohol was beginning to hit her harder than it had before.

Her legs were like jell-o underneath her, her knees buckling occasionally. I removed my arm from her grip and scooped her up. I carefully held her back and the back of her legs, just where they bend.

”W-why are you carry-carrying me?” Chloe questioned her arms wrapping around my neck. She felt lighter than I had anticipated, carrying her the rest of the way didn’t pose a problem.

“You were barely walking on your own, doll. I didn’t want you to fall and hurt yourself so I figured the best thing to do would be to just carry you. If you want me to put you down you’ve just got to say the word.”

She looked up at me with blood shot eyes but said nothing, just held onto me a little looser.

“Where are we going now?”

”Five…” She whispered placing her head on my chest.

“Five what?”

“Five…” She grumbled lowly in her throat.

”I’m going to assume you mean five flats.” I continued walking with her held in my arms. I was careful to count the doors as I passed them only stopping when I reached the fifth.

“Is this it?” I asked looking down at her. She nodded her head and dropped an arm from my arm to fish her keys from her pocket. I walked up the steps to the door of the flat and set her down gently on her feet.

“Fuck…” She moaned dropping her keys on the ground.

“What?” I asked worried placing my hand on her back to steady her.

“I can’t get the k-key into the d-d-door…”

I bent and retrieved the keys from their spot on the door mat and held them to her.

“Which key is it?” She pointed to a purple key. I made quick and opened the door with it before pushing it open retrieving the key from the lock.

“Alright you’re home Chlo.” I handed her back her keys and scrunched my hair in my fist watching her.

She flashed me a lazy smile before using the door frame to get inside. She called out ‘Samantha!’ and waited leaning against the wall just beside the door. I waited for something which never came and sighed. She was home alone, clearly.

She turned to me then, a timid expression on her face.

“Will you… Will you stay with me? I’m scared to be… I’m scared to be alone.”

’No Harry! This is a bad idea. You don’t have any idea who this Chlo woman is! She could be married to some deranged man, and he could kill you if he finds you here. She could be a deranged woman and SHE could kill you if you let your guard down. DON’T stay.’ My mind screamed at me, urging me to say no.

I heard a voice say “Sure Chlo.” and it took me a few beats to realize it was my voice. My mouth had worked against my brain.

”Thank you.” She mumbled and her legs gave out from underneath her.

Within a second I reacted and caught her before she hit the ground.

’Great, this will be interesting’ I thought.
