The Night It All Went Down

Chapter 4

Louis POV
I had to blink again when the officers stepped into the room. I was so shocked, my speech faltered and everybody assumed I’d closed the conversation. But, after a few moments, it became clear to them that the guys and I were staring at something far off in the distance.

Confused, most people turned around in their seats, and that was when the officer grabbed Kayleigh. I knew what this meant, even before he uttered those words. Kayleigh was the suspect in a crime, and I had no idea why. Kayleigh gasped audibly as she was hauled up in front of everybody and made an example of. I couldn’t just stand here and let this happen, especially since she had nothing to do with the whole worrying affair. But I was too paralysed with shock to even open my mouth partway. I threw a quick glance to my left and saw Niall just standing there, his expression giving nothing away.

Kayleigh struggled against the male officer’s grip but she didn’t get away. The cold, dull snap of the handcuffs clipped around her wrists but she was still attempting to make him release her. All at once, she swung her head round to look at me directly, her eyes sending me a plea to get her out of there. And that was when the boys and I intervened.

“Hey! You can’t do that!” I yelled, but I was drowned out by Niall’s and Harry’s hollers. Well that went just ‘spiffingly’ as my mum likes to say, didn’t it? Zayn was telling the officers that they needed evidence that would stand up in court to make an arrest like this but they’d apparently already found some. The case against Kayleigh was so far not looking good.

“NO! If you insist on taking Kayleigh with you, which you have no right to do because you have no evidence she was even there, I’m coming with you!” Niall finally roared, I turned to him, eyebrows raised. I had never seen Niall so pissed, not even when Zayn and I had that little ‘accident’ in Peru. He was always so chilled, laid back and really cute when it came down to the crunch. But this was a whole different level. Harry and I locked eyes- what the hell was going on here?

I noticed Niall was running off, closely followed by Liam and Harry who broke my gaze with a shrug. Zayn and I stood by Kayleigh, me telepathically communicating with her, telling her it would be all right and that we would get her out of this. I mentally scoffed, remembering she couldn’t hear me but continued anyway, hoping Kayleigh would get the idea.

Suddenly, the officers began to escort Kayleigh from the building. Zayn and I dashed ahead of them and reached Niall’s SUV, not bothering to buckle up.

“Step on it.” I said firmly. Niall didn’t hesitate to put his foot on the accelerator and we shot forward, on the tail of the police car that had Kayleigh inside it.

Niall’s grip on the steering wheel was turning his knuckles a pure white colour and I tried to stimulate conversation- but I slipped back into talking about what we were going to do about Kayleigh.

“So, what’s our plan?” I questioned hesitantly, anxious for Niall or one of the other lads to blow his top.

“We get in, prove she’s innocent and get out again. Simple.” Zayn said.

“No, not simple, Zayn.” Liam interrupted him. “We can’t prove ourselves she’s innocent, we’re going to have to get a lawyer in. And quickly at that too.”

Harry scratched his head slightly, trying to remember something. “Hey, guys. Do you remember when that boy band tried to sue us for taking their name? We had that hot lawyer, what was her name?”

“Abby Ingrid.” I supplied. “And you find most girls hot Harry. “ I rolled my eyes.

“Abby Ingrid! That’s it!” He yelled triumphantly, grabbing his phone and scrolling through his list of contacts. “Got her.”

“What? You have her number?” Liam asked, shocked.

Niall had been notably silent until this point. “Yeah, she’ll get Kayleigh out of there. She’s amazing. Trouble is, how fast can we get her here? I mean, where the hell is she? She could be anywhere in the world and a plane can only go so fast.”

“No, I think she’s in Paris this weekend with some burglary case. It’s on her Twitter.” Harry flashed the HTC’s screen at me.

“You follow her too?” Liam practically whined. “Do you not realise how that looks Harry?” Harry rolled his eyes and hit the call button, putting the call through to the car’s Hands Free.

“Hello. You’ve reached Abby Ingrid, lawyer with Hastings and Co- how may I help you?” A clear voice sounded through the car.

“Um, Abby? It’s Harry here. I believe you may remember helping us out on that case a few years back now.”

“Oh, Harry. Is everything okay? How’s everybody else?” Abby asked.

“We’re fine.” I yelled down the phone, “But we need your help!”

“I gathered that Louis!” She laughed quietly. “So what’s the problem?”

“Well, we have a friend. She’s been wrongly accused of murder and she’s being taken in for questioning now. We were wondering- could you help us out?” Niall began.

“Am I correct to assume this ‘friend’ is Kayleigh Michaels?” Abby coughed.

“Um, yes. How do you know that?” Zayn asked cautiously.

“Because it’s all over Twitter, the news and I’m pretty positive magazines will have it as tomorrow’s front page article. Some girl called Hallie Jordan posted about it. Now everybody’s in on it.” Abby told them.

“Shit.” Niall cursed. “Can somebody check that out? This is not good.”

“No, it’s not Niall. Look, you guys are in Paris right? I’m a few minutes outside of Paris but I can probably be there in half and hour if you give me the right address.”

Niall rattled off the address of the police station we were headed to.

“Okay, I’ll be there as soon as I can. Niall, I know you’re stressed about this, but I’ll get Kayleigh out. However, you’re going to need to do what we discussed a couple of years ago soon. Otherwise you’re going to be involved in this case and you’ll never get a chance to do it.” Abby explained.

Then the line went dead.

What. The. Actual. Hell? What had he and Abby discussed and why hadn’t he told us about it? I looked pointedly at Niall who rolled his eyes and continued on driving.

“Niall.” I warned him. “What’s this about?”

“It doesn’t matter right now, can we please just go and get Kayleigh? She needs help, if you still want to know later, I’ll tell you. But right now, I’ve…we’ve got to help her. She’s not going down for something she didn’t do.” Niall thumped the wheel hard.

“Er…..guys?” Zayn looked up from his phone screen. “We have a slight problem. Look.” He thrust the phone in my face and I glanced over at it, shock slowly becoming distinct on my face.

@KalesMiles3476 @URTOOGOODFORTHEM: What the actual fuck? Kayleigh Michaels- you bitch!

@1Dupdates: BREAKING NEWS! The boys’ stylist and close friend, Kayleigh Michaels, has been arrested! More on this soon!

@KalesMiles3476 @BrinniKeegan: How could you? You deceitful bitch! You will never get away with this!

@FOXNews: KAYLEIGH MICHAELS ACCUSED OF MURDERING ONE DIRECTION HEAD OF SECURITY?

@HollywoodLife: We’ve just received word that Kayleigh Michaels, stylist of 1D, has been arrested in Paris over the death of Paul Higgins.

“Shit! Shit! Shit!” Niall cursed, banging his hand on the steering wheel once again, unable to form any cohesive words as I read the tweets out.

“Chill, mate. It’s going to be okay, we’ll get her out of there. Don’t stress so much. But please do remember to tell us why you’re so het up about all of this.” Liam said placatingly.

“It’s just…well, Abby knows something about me that shouldn’t really. She walked in when I was Skyping with…somebody that I missed. She didn’t show herself until the chat was over but she kind of worked something out. I didn’t mean for it to happen because not even you knew about it.” Niall explained, driving as quickly as he could, all the while keeping the police car in sight.

I frowned, looking down and trying to work something out. This was the feeling I’d had yesterday, in the dressing room when Kayleigh was sorting the trousers (that Niall had ripped) out. It was almost as if I was missing an important piece of information that would help me solve all of this. But I just couldn’t work out what it was. The car continued to travel for some time, only switching lanes when somebody or something was blocking its way. Niall kept pace with it all the time, fixed on keeping up with Kayleigh.

“Wait-say that again Louis.” Liam’s voicewhispered, hushed. We were three rows back so it was highly unlikely Niall would hear us but even so I kept my voice low.

”Say what again?”

“The bit about Niall fixed on keeping up with Kayleigh!"

“Oh my god…” I slowly started to realise something. How had it been two years and we hadn’t known? God, Niall was usually rubbish at keeping something to himself. But this was mind blowing.

“I think so.” Liam nodded, his lips a thin line of concentration and thinking.

“So…what?” I ask, trying to piece this all together.

“Niall likes Kayleigh- and he’s liked her since she started working with us. How the hell did we not know?” Liam raises his voice a little, causing Niall to look over.

“What do you not know?” He questions suspiciously.

I grin to myself, realising the fun we could have with this one. “Oh, you know, things like how to get a rocket to the moon, how to eat an apple without it getting stuck in your teeth, the person that’s got a crush on Kayleigh…” I trail off, feeling a smirk tug at the edges of my lips.

“What?” He looks up sharply.

“Somebody has a crush on Kayleigh, she told us about someone leaving a bunch of roses in wardrobe with ‘TO: Kayleigh FROM: Your Secret Admirer.” Liam nudged me and gave me an eye roll. I only smirked in reply.

“Somebody…likes Kayleigh?” He stuttered. Harry and Zayn quickly caught on. I guess you could call it guy’s instinct because their jaws were slack with the shock.

“I….I don’t believe it! How did you keep that one a secret Ni?” Harry spluttered. I began to laugh. Niall seemed to realise I’d tricked him.

“Ah. I see.” He said quietly. “So, no one sent any roses to Kayleigh?” He continues, hopefully.

“No, Niall.” Harry shakes his head. “But how did you keep this such a secret? You’re terrible at keeping them!”

“Well, she’s my best friend. It would be kind of creepy if you really consider it. And anyway, what are the chances she likes me back?” Niall shrugs.

“Even so mate. We’ve told each other everything like that for five years now. Why keep it from us?” Zayn asks.

“I don’t know.” Niall mumbles. But it seems as though he is saved as the car pulls into the car park of a dirty, gross building. Paint is flaking and peeling off the wall and there’s nothing to indicate that it’s a police station. It could have been a centre where they experimented on human beings if you didn’t know what you were really dealing with.

Niall dumped the car haphazardly, neglecting it in the middle of the car park, and dashed to Kayleigh. I shook my head but ran after him, kicking up the shingle and gravel (so that it would hit the police cars) as I went.

The officers shot me dirty looks but I just shrugged in a ‘What are you going to do about it?’ way and carried on into the building.

Inside, it was much more obvious that it was a police station. Rows upon rows of blue and white, plastic waiting chairs lined the walls and papers littered the ground. A receptionist wore a uniform and there were several guards stationed at different posts and entrances.

With a heavy heart, I dragged myself to the front desk and waited patiently while Kayleigh was checked in. The receptionist, though easily in her mid-thirties, seemed flustered at the sight of us and, come to think about it, a foul aroma. Harry shot her a cheeky grin but she quickly regained her composure and set about logging Kayleigh in.

“Boys, wait over there please. Somebody will come to chat to you soon.” She indicates the waiting chairs as they drag Kayleigh off to a small room lining the corridor. I sit down with Zayn, Liam and Harry but Niall starts to go off after Kayleigh. She throws a short smile over her shoulder at him and tells him to sit down, saying she’d catch up with him soon. Then the officers rounded the corner and Niall was left standing there like a loon.

Zayn stood up and guided him back to the seats.

“When’s Abby getting here?” he asked.

“Soon. She may be a little while though because, according to this, there appears to be some light traffic on the main road into Paris.” I shrug back at Niall, pointing to an ancient telly on a dusty shelf. He nods.

I shut my eyes and imagine myself anywhere but here. I go to Doncaster, I see Eleanor, I see London, I see the tour bus and I imagine myself at home. But even thinking can’t take away the noises around me. Like the hustle and bustle of passing officers and the sirens of police cars pulling up outside. No matter where I tried to disappear to, the noises came back to haunt me and I was forced to stay in reality. In the end, I realised the only thing I could do to take my mind off things was chat to El, she always got me out of funks.

“I’m just going to call El, guys.” I tell them, backing away outside. They nod and I step into the warm, sunlit day outside. How can everything be so perfect in the sky when everything is so mucked up down on the ground?

I put the call through and pray El picks up.

“Hello? Louis?” El said, I could tell she was smiling on the other end.

“Hey babe! How are you doing?” I ask.

“I’m good, thank you. What about you?”

“Have you not been on an social media?”

“Is it really true?” El asks hesitantly. “Did…did Kayleigh really kill him?”

“No. She was with the boys and I the whole night. She was no where near Paul.” I explain, as El releases her held breath.

“Well, everybody’s innocent until proven guilty, Lou. We need to have faith in her but please be careful, yeah?”

“I will El. I’m sorry this call has to be short, I’m at the police station right now. I have to go and give evidence.”

“Okay. Be safe. I love you Louis.”

“I love you too, El.” I whisper as I silently hang up the phone. I trudge back inside to see the boys gone. Panicking, I turn to the receptionist.

“Where are my friends?” I demand, suddenly worried.

“Please remain calm, Mr Tomlinson. I can see you are upset. Each one is in a separate room, giving evidence. Head to room 22 and they will interview you. Do you require a lawyer?” She looks at me expectantly.

“No thanks. I’ve done this before, I can handle myself.” She nods and indicates the room I’m supposed to be in with her blue pen cap, before returning to her work.

As I turn the handle to the room, a lady sits there waiting.

“Good afternoon Mr Tomlinson. My name’s Lándy and I’ll be questioning you today. Is there anything you require before we begin?” Lándy asks me.

I shake my head and mumble no.

“Good then we’ll begin.”

When the interview finished, I returned outside to find everybody but Niall sitting in the waiting area.

“Hey guys! Where’s Niall?” I ask, taking a seat on a brilliant white chair.

“He’s in the holding cell with Kayleigh. He asked to just have a few moments alone with her.” Zayn wiggled his eyebrows suggestively and I smirked.

When Niall came out of the room, he was holding his shirt in one hand.

“Er, Niall? I didn’t think physical contact was allowed during visitor times?” I snicker. He chuckles.

“Nope Louis! She was just crying so much she soaked my shirt. Do any of you have a spare one?” He asks.

“There’s one in the car I think mate. I put my suitcase in there this morning.” Liam shrugged. Niall nodded and left.

“Time to go in?” Harry asks, having remained silent for most of the time since my arrival.

I nod, and push open the door.

Notes

Hi! I noticed I got my 3rd subscriber!
Thank you :) I'm sorry- I don't know your name! Thank you for subscribing it means a lot!

I don't know what made me do Louis' point of view really, guess I just wanted to get a different perspective on it all! Plus you get to find new things out! If you think this story's moving a little bit to fast, it's because the prequel is all about how Kayleigh first gets the job and how Niall's feelings begin to develop. In this one, Niall gets the guts to tell her! Sorry, I felt I had to explain as somebody did question me earlier as to why the story was going so quickly!

I may post the prequel, I may not. Either way, just know that Kayleigh's not just some random girl they all take an interest in. She's known them for a few years :) sorry if I didn't make that clear enough but I think I did! :) Thanks for taking the time to read this :)
