The Night It All Went Down

Chapter 17

Tuesday. Two whole days since Niall had last been civil with me and I had had enough. He refused to eat dinner with me, he refused to talk properly to me and he also refused to take an interest in what the rest of the band were doing. It was all I could do not to throw something at him and scream and yell too. All of this ignoring and carrying the argument on was doing my head in and I was almost glad for the distraction of taking El to her appointment at the clinic.

Sighing, I grabbed my bag from where it lay on the floor and glanced around my room. I still had the rest of this week till the boys played their last few shows for the tour but I was already planning styles and looking at trends. My large, purple folder lay messily on the floor and my sketched designs were littered all around the cream carpet. To be honest, it was just something that took my mind off everything until I was able to think straight.

My mind was full of thoughts of my abilities, solving the murder case and poor El. I was also trying to distance myself from Niall's cold attitude. I shut the door behind me as I left my bedroom and started down the stairs to the ground floor. El and Louis' house wasn't that far away, about a mile or so, and my plan was to walk it, think over how I would tell the boys what I had found out about Anni at the meeting later today.

I reached the front door and hesitated. Did I really want to leave the house without saying goodbye to Niall first? I called up the stairs to him but received no answer. Stupid man. I walked outside and closed the door, anxious to get away before Niall had the opportunity to run after me - even though I knew that the chances of that happening were slim.

My feet pounded the concrete as I ran my current situation through my mind, trying to calm my thoughts down. So Paul was targeted by this Anni group, and whoever killed him was part of it too. Unfortunately for us though, it seemed like nearly half of all the people working for One Direction had ties to the group one way or another. We had to do some more digging.

As for my abilities, I knew I could fly and heal myself but the voice I had learnt everything from said that there were three other abilities attached to being able to fly and, so far, I had only learnt one. Trying to call on the mysterious voice, I shut my eyes and squeezed them tightly, yelling inside my head for its presence.

"You called?" The male voice drawled, echoing in my mind. I nearly fell over when it answered me however I quickly regained my composure.

"Yes. I want to know about the other two abilities I possess." I replied, my voice quivering a little even though I wasn't speaking out loud.

"Very well. You know about the flying and healing, correct?"

"Correct."

"Then I suppose we should move on to telepathy."

"Telepathy?" I exclaimed, shocked and surprised. I was more than eager to hear how this worked as it was something my younger self had always wanted to be able to do.

"Yes, but calm down. You can only telepathically communicate with a very special person who will remain in your life for all eternity. That person is called your Match. But since you don't know who that is yet, you can't do anything. It's like Zayn explained to you, your Match will be your life long partner and the person who you will have kids with."

"Do you know who my Match is?" I quizzed, knowing it was a long shot. "And is that why, on my back, it says Matched?"

"Yes and yes. But I can't tell you. You will find out soon. The other ability you possess is a little more tricky. You can only use it once and it is very hard to do. I will just explain what it is and how it works because you won't be able to practise."

"Okay......."

"Your final ability is being able to survive silver."

"What? That's pretty pathetic, I can survive silver. Look." I glanced down in my bag and rifled through for the silver bracelet my adoptive mum had given me years ago. It was the only really expensive thing that I possessed and I was proud to own it. I started attempting to pull the bracelet out but, suddenly, a searing pain (worse than the time I had burnt myself on the hob) shot through my arm and forced me to cry out in agony. I dropped the bracelet and looked at my hand, noticing the raw flesh visible on my hand.

"Told you. That's the only thing you aren't able to heal yourself from."

"Like.......werewolves?" I asked slowly, disbelief lacing my voice.

"Exactly, but I sincerely doubt you turn into a wolf at night, do you?"

"No."

"So, anyway. You can only heal yourself from silver once and my advice would be to save it." I started chewing my lip as I round the corner of Payron Drive, El's road. I was able to hear the voice beginning to fade now and I tried to grasp it, failing miserably

"I won't be returning, Kayleigh. I have done all I was programmed to do. Helped you learn about your abilities. For now, though, just keep things on the lowdown."

"Wait!" I called out desperately. "Stop! Wait!"

But the voice had faded from existence and I was left standing in front on El's and Louis' door. I reached my hand up and pushed the bell, hearing a tune ring inside the house. I tried to keep myself calm but I nearly broke my resolve when Louis opened the door with a wide grin.

"So you took El for a week and you've come back to steal her again?" He laughed, his teeth sparking in the morning sunlight.

"Uh.....yeah." I replied, knowing full well if I tried to pad my answer out anymore I would risk being caught lying. And I had promised El I would keep her secret for her.

"So has Niall apologised yet? El said you called her on Sunday about Niall being a prat but that you never elaborated." Louis asked me, concern growing on his features.

I sighed and ran a hand through my long, red hair. I couldn't take much more of what Niall was slowly doing to me because it was killing me inside. I shut my eyes tight and prayed water wouldn't creep out.

"No. He hasn't. He's not spoken civilly to me since Sunday and I don't know how much more of this I can take." I buried my face in my palms and let out and exasperated breath. "He hasn't even asked me how I am."

"Arse." Louis mumbled, a crease appearing in his brow like he was thinking. "Do you want to go and grab yourself a drink? I need to just have a quick word with El but I promise you everything will be okay." His voice was sympathetic and I made my way to the kitchen on the other side of the house.

I wasn't thirsty nor was I particularly thrilled that he was blowing me off but I knew he needed time with El to have a quick chat about staying safe and whatnot. Sometimes Louis was so protective of her, he acted like she had just turned five. I grabbed a glass from the cupboard and filled it with water, taking my time to slowly glug down the ice cold liquid.

El suddenly appeared in the doorway, her bag slung over her shoulder and a jovial grin on her face.

"You ready?" She questioned, to which I replied with a scoff.

"It should be me asking that, not you." I rolled my eyes. "But yes, let's go."

We made our way through the house and ran into Louis who was sitting on the staircase and talking to one of the boys. I raised my hand in farewell and he acknowledged me with a nod as we left the house and crunched down the gravel path.

"Thank you for coming with me today, Kayleigh. It means a lot." El smiled at me as we opened the car door, climbed in and buckled into our seats. She gripped the steering wheel till her knuckles turned a deathly white and I gently laid my hand over them.

"It'll be okay. I'm right here." I said softly. She smiled at me warmly and slowly began to pull out of the driveway, turning down the road and speeding away.

She never stopped until we reached the hospital.

When El and I arrived back at her house, all was silent. It made me wonder what was going on because we'd been going to have a meeting to discuss the case here and therefore the boys should have already turned up. That didn't seem to be the case though. El and I made our way through the house until we got into the living room, plopping down on the cream sofas that faced the fireplace. It had always struck me as odd that El and Louis had a fireplace- they just didn't seem the type of people to like them.

"Where are the boys?" I asked her, confused.

"Probably down in the games room." She shrugged. "I'll call Louis and tell him to bring them up."

"You have a games room?" I raised my eyebrows in shock. I had never seen nor heard of this elusive room and I made El chuckle.

"It's in a separate part of the house, leading from the kitchen. Louis insisted it should be built there so we could go in there if we were ever attacked. Crazy right?"

"Totally," I agreed.

Seconds later, all five boys burst into the room, rowdy and laughing. It was like they'd heard us talking about El calling Louis because we hadn't talked to them yet. El clearly sensed my confusion because she leaned over to whisper in my ear.

"Cameras." She giggled as I felt my eyes widen in shock.

The boys all fell down on various different seats and faced us both. Niall, I noticed, changed from happy to sullen when he saw me and I very nearly slapped him, wondering what the hell his problem was. Louis' eyes flicked between us both and I spotted his subtle roll of the eyes. Nice, Louis. Really nice.

"So, everybody," Liam began "Sophia apologises that she couldn't make it due to work and such, Perrie is obviously away on tour so I think we can begin this meeting. First off, Kayleigh. You told Niall you'd worked something out?"

He'd told them? The buggar had the cheek to talk to them about me but not me directly? I wiped my hand over my mouth and levelled my eyes with everybody in the room, willing them to suddenly change their minds and discuss what they'd worked out. No such luck.

"Um, well.....I think Anni isn't a person. I think it's a group." I said slowly, dropping my gaze slightly.

"Sorry?" Zayn asked, puzzlement clear in his voice. "How can it be a group?"

"Think about it. Tessa was shooting at us, right? But she doesn't have a licence to purchase or shoot firearms. So that must mean she was provided with them. However, if what caused...." I paused, unsure if El knew about our abilities. I hadn't told her but Louis did have trouble keeping his mouth shut sometimes.

"I know about your abilities, Kayleigh." El rolled her eyes. "I'm not stupid. Just carry on."

I shot Louis a glare and he looked sheepish but then I decided it wasn't that bad El knowing.

"Anyway, if what caused mine and Niall's abilities was in that bullet, then that had to be made by somebody. And that would need a whole team of people. Therefore, you can see where my theory that it's a group comes from."

"Whoa, whoa, whoa. Kayleigh, you were never shot with a bullet......" Harry said slowly "I thought that was all cleared up?"

I heard Zayn sigh, exasperated, from the other side of the sofa. He'd worked it out but the others hadn't and I was quite surprised he hadn't filled them in with everything. I said as much before elaborating.

"So I can heal myself, read my Match's mind, whoever that is and survive silver. Silver is the only thing I can't heal myself against and that ability can only be used once." I shrugged, noticing that the boys' mouths had hit the floor. "I thought you knew all of this?"

"Err....let me think about that one. NO! Zayn, why the hell didn't you tell us?" Liam threw his hands into the air.

"Figured you already knew." Zayn defended his actions, not really bothered.

"So whoever killed Paul is part of this group then?" Niall spoke for the first time, cautiously.

"Yes," El grimaced, her eyes staring daggers at him.

"Okay. But how are we supposed to know how this group operates? How are we supposed to know who's in it? There's probably thousands of people in it." Harry frowned again. I smiled triumphantly having worked that one out already.

"Easy. There's a database connected to those files Ronnie sent me a while back in Paris. I bet you anything you like that it will be easy to alter it to get it to show Anni's database." I shrugged, tugging my laptop from my bag.

"How?" Liam asked, suddenly intrigued.

"I picked up a few things from the days before I was adopted. I still remember my actual parents you know, I just say that I don't know who they are because it hurts way too much to admit that they gave me up after eleven years of raising me." My statement made everybody gasp and I simply rolled my eyes.

"I was eleven when I was adopted. I had a sister who was twenty one and two parents. As far as I know, my parents suddenly decided they had a problem with me and left me on my aunt's doorstep. She couldn't cope with a kid so gave me up. Haven't seen or heard from any of them since and I don't plan on contacting them."

I realised the room was sitting in stunned silence and it was a while till anybody spoke up. By that time, thou, I had Anni's database up on the computer screen.

"We...we just assumed you were a baby when you were adopted." Niall spluttered, confused.

"Don't just assume. Let that be a lesson to you. Because we have a far bigger problem than that." I said wildly, my eyes growing wide as my eyes landed on the screen.

"What could be more important than that?" Zayn asked, reeling in shock.

"Remember how we assumed Angelica Walters was dead?" I questioned, glancing around the room at everybody. "She's not. She's very much alive."
