Roses & Wallflowers

I left school that day confused, mad, and proud. I was confused because I made a friend today, I was mad because of that boy in my 7th period, and I was proud because I actually made a friend. I know I already said that, but I am proud.

I didn’t have a ride home, so I had to sit there and wait 2 hours in the cold. Waiting for my irresponsible mom.

“Why didn’t you tell any of those cool kids to give you a ride home Haize? I had to leave work just to come pick you up.” She said when she pulled her car up and I got in.

“Well I’m sorry that it’s such a big deal to come pick up your only daughter.”

“Hey,” She grabbed my jaw and turned me towards her, but I pulled away. “You are going to respect me whether you like it or not.”

While we were riding down the road, she heard my stomach growling. “Are you serious? Why didn’t you eat at school? Now I have to stop and get you some food or you’re going to starve. Why do I have to be the adult in this family? Why can’t we work together Haize? You are 17 years old, and you should be able to do these things on your own.”

Tears stung my eyes as she pulled into the drive through of McDonalds. My mother never treats me good. In fact, I don’t think respect is in her dictionary.

“Here, eat.” She threw a small burger in my lap and I picked it up.

“You expect me to eat this?”

“Yes I expect you to eat that. What else are you going to eat? You know that I don’t have enough money to pay for both of us.”

“So you’d rather sit there and eat a gourmet dinner, while you feed your 17 year old daughter junk food? Wow, shows how much you really care about me.”

“I care about you just as much as I care about dirt.” That hurt, that honestly hurt. But that’s my mother for you. “Besides, you were an accident anyways. I didn’t even want you. I begged your father for an abortion, but he wanted to keep you. But look where he is now. In another woman’s bed. He could’ve at least taken you with him so I wouldn’t have to keep you.”

I couldn’t keep my tears from falling. “Well if you don’t want me, then why don’t you just put me up for adoption?”

“Because you have to pay to do that. And I don’t have the money for that.”

“Well I don’t know why you’re throwing such a fit about having a kid. It was bound to happen, and if you didn’t want a kid, you should’ve used protection-”

She slammed on her breaks and yelled, “I am not having this conversation with you! You eat your stupid burger and be happy that I am feeding you! Now shut your mouth, and as soon as we get home, I want you to go straight to your room because I can’t even stand to look at you right now!”

As soon as we got home, I threw the burger back at her and she looked at me like I had been in a major crime. “I don’t want your stupid burger anyways.”

Then I ran up to my room and slammed my door shut. I didn’t even want to be here at this point. I can’t even stand to see myself in the mirror, and now my mother is giving me every reason to run away.

I was just about to fall asleep after three hours of crying, when my mother walked into my bedroom.

“I thought you didn’t want to look at me.” I muttered and she sighed.

“I don’t. But I need you do some things for me. I need my shirts ironed for work tonight, and I would like you to make me some breakfast in the morning. There are eggs and pancake mix in the fridge, and you can eat some bread or something.”

Can I rip her head off, please? I sat up in my bed and she held her hand over her nose. “And you need to clean yourself. You smell like a pig.”

“So you’re telling me that you’re actually going to let me take a shower?”

“Be my guest. But don’t forget after you get out, you have to iron my shirts.”

“Yes mother.” I walked past her and into the bathroom.

After I got out of the shower, I did what she told me and ironed her shirts. And in the morning, I made her breakfast. And luckily I sneaked my own pancake when she wasn’t awake yet. And then I got ready for school. I decided to wear some skinny jeans, black converse, and a white tshirt. I put my hair in a messy bun, and then I left for school.

I had to leave early because I had to walk to school, and it takes me 15 minutes to get to school by feet. And I hated it.

When I got to school, I went to my locker first, looking out for those girls that bullied me yesterday. Luckily, they weren’t there when I got my books. But when I was walking to my 1st period, they walked up to me.

“Hey nerd. What’s your plan today? Are you finally going to stop being so low?”

“Hey Haize.” I looked over to see Julian.

The girl laughed and said, “Oh, you found another nerd friend.”

“Yeah, what’s it to you?” Julian said.

“Was anyone talking to you Julian?”

“Was anyone asking you to bully her Carly?”

The girl scoffed and rolled her eyes. “We’ll finish this later Jones.” She pointed in my face and her and her friends walked away.

“Thanks for that.” I said when we walked into the classroom.

“I’d be happy to help. Besides, you don’t deserve to be bullied. I’ve been through it all.”

“How did you stop it?”

He smiled, “I just stood up for myself.”

“Okay class. Get ready to learn.” Mrs. Barnes said.

Of course I was excited, because it’s Science. But I got even more excited when Julian slid a piece of paper on my desk. It said: Ice cream after school with me?

“Are you asking me on a date Julian?” I was excited, but only because I’ve never been asked on a date before.

“Should I be ashamed to say yes?”

“I’d be happy to go on a date with you.” I smiled, and he returned the smile.

I was excited for this date, and nothing could ruin this day. That is of course that stupid boy in 7th ruins it all. Oh well, we’ll see what’s up his sleeve today.
