Roses & Wallflowers

Nineteen.

When I went home that night, I couldn’t even think without crying. The only thing I could think about about was Mason… And this is all your fault.

In fact, we didn’t even have school the next day because one of the teachers had found him on the ground, dead. And they had called an ambulance, and now the police are trying to figure out who had possibly killed him.

And the thing that upsets me the most, is that no one bothered to pick Mason up. Everyone just walked away when me and Harry left, and they didn’t even bother to call the cops. He was found at 10:30 at night because that’s when the last teacher left.

Oh God, you do not know how much it pains me to believe… That it could’ve actually been my fault.

How could I have seriously been so stupid? Mason was a great guy, and in fact, all of this is my fault.

I shouldn’t have trusted Julian, and I shouldn’t have told Mason about our kiss. Then he wouldn’t have taken a swing on him.

Harry has… Oh… I can’t even think about him without crying harder and those small, meaningful words that made my heart shatter… And for that you deserve to burn in hell.

I was knocked out of my train of thought when the preacher started to talk.

Mason Dickens passed away in an ambulance on a ride to the St. Jude’s Hospital, on the 5th of January 2015, aged 19 years. Loving son of Bethany Dickens and Vince Dickens, and nephew of Grace Holen and Ben Holen.”

Mason’s mother and father, and many of his friends made a eulogy, and many of them spoke aloud. And then when I thought all my tears had fallen, Harry walked up to the stand and sighed.

“It’s um, wow. Excuse me,” He put his hand on his forehead and ran it down his face, taking a deep breath. “Mason was a great man. And I know this because I’ve known him all my life. He was the greatest of friends, and he was like a brother to me. He had always complained because he never had a brother, when really he did.” His chin trembled and he let his tears fall, making more of mine fall. “Mason Dickens did not deserve to die. He had a bright future ahead of him, and I knew he was going to make it big. He could do anything that he wanted to do, he could say anything that he wanted to say,” He smiled through his tears. “And I miss him already. I remember back in middle school when we would laugh at the girls and how they bowed to our feet. But now I’m just regretting that because for once we both actually fell in love with a girl,” My hand went to my mouth and he looked at me when he said, “But I think I’m pretty sure I regret falling in love too. And it’s my fault the woman he loved ran away from him.” He started to cry and smiled again. “Last night I thought long and hard about something. I thought about how much I really was going to miss Mason. And the way he could always make people smile, and the way he laughed in the most inappropriate times. But the thing I will miss most about Mason is, how he always put the people he cared about first. He never cared what anyone said about him, but if they said something bad about his family, he would take care of it.” Then he looked up to the sky and smiled. “Mason I know you’re up there with God, looking young and beautiful. But I just want to make sure you know something,” He closed his eyes. “Mason Dickens, no matter how long we’re apart, you will always be my one, true best friend, and I love you.” Then he looked back down at Mason’s family and smiled before saying, “May he rest in peace with the Lord.” Then he stepped down from the stand and sat down in his seat before crying again.

When the funeral was over, I spoke to many of Mason’s family members and told them that he was in a better place.

When I walked out of the funeral home I saw Harry leaning up against the wall, rubbing his eyes. I chose to just walk past him because I knew he didn’t want to say anything to me but…

“Hey.” I heard his voice behind me and I froze in my tracks.
