Chasing Angels - ON HOLD
The Beach
"Oh my gosh! Guys! Come here! There's turtle eggs!" Aubrey shouted from behind one of the sand dunes.
It was our last night at South Padre and we were hunting for the largest shell we could find, the best part of leaving. So far, we had found three fairly large seashells, but we hadn't broken our own personal record yet.
We all ran to see the turtle eggs, Carson because he knew that you had to dig to find turtle eggs, and the rest of us because we wanted to see them. When we found Aubrey, Carson started shouting at her about the dangers of uncovering a turtle nest. Then they hugged it out and covered the eggs again.
"Holy shit!" I shouted. "Over here! This thing is MASSIVE!" I shouted, picking up the smallest shell I could find. I could hear the excited shouts of my mates as they ran toward me. They laughed when they realized it was just a tiny shell you could find in a ditch anywhere after it floods, which doesn't happen in Texas very often. But it has. And we've found shells.
"So, Evan," Carson said, holding his marshmallow over the open flames of our campfire. "When are you leaving for London?"
"I'm leaving the day after tomorrow. My mum and dad have my old room set up for me, so I can't wait much longer to leave," I said, smiling slightly. "It was already a huge sacrifice for them to let me come here for a week to hang out with you lot. I'll be gone the entire summer, so you'll have to find a way to survive without me."
"Oh, how ever will we do it?!" Dustin said dramatically, putting the back of his hand to his forehead. We all laughed, the sound ringing through the air like odd bells.
"I know, I know, you're all going to go mad and die," I said, laughing. "Sometimes I think you're gay, Dusty."
"Sometimes, I think I am, too," he joked, walking around the fire and planting a loud, wet kiss on Carson's cheek, causing the laughter to start all over again.
"Guys, it's ten. We have to put out the fire now," Carson said, looking at his watch. I grabbed one of the many buckets we had for this purpose, ran to the ocean and scooped up a bucket of water. I was followed by the rest of the group. We dumped our buckets on the fire all at once and were almost immediately surrounded by darkness. I pulled out my waterproof flashlight and turned it on, shining the light indirectly at my face. Everyone followed my example as we had done the past two years.
"Ready?" I asked, a mischevious look on my face.
"Ready," they all confirmed.
"Aubrey, since it was your turn to choose the song, I trust that you have it set up and ready to go?" I said, taking off my shorts and tank top, revealing my neon yellow bikini that had glow-in-the-dark rhinestones on it.
"My speakers pooped. Do you have yours with you?" she answered, stripping off her clothes and revealing an identical bikini, except neon pink.
"Yup," I said, taking her phone and taking my speakers out from my bag. I plugged them into her phone and handed it back to her. She hit a button on her iPhone and set it in the sand, turning on her flashlight app on dim so nobody would step on it when we got back and still keeping within the beach laws, although she was pushing it a little.
the song "Up All Night" by One Direction started playing, and we all ran toward the water with our flashlights in hand, belting out the song as we ran. The water was freezing, but we didn't care. We shrieked and splashed the water at one another, knowing who was were because we all were wearing something glow in the dark.
But while everyone else was having fun, I couldn't help but wonder what would happen if He were there when I got back to London.
