Chapter 7

Ellie Hoover

I woke up to the stream of sunlight, muted by the clutter of clouds covering the Seattle sky. I groaned and swung my arm over to my bedside table, unable to feel out my phone. Damn. I plopped back down onto my bed with my face into the pillows. The smell of my recently washed linens engulfed me as I took a deep breathe. Normally I would be a morning person, but it was Saturday and in a couple of hours I would be in my air, making my way to a place I haven’t stepped foot in for around five or so years.

I decided it was probably best to take a shower and get ready for the day, despite my uncertainties. I rose out of my white, crisp sheets and made my way to the bathroom. My feet instantly numbed at the contact with the cold hardwood floors.

As I took a look at my reflection in the mirror I flinched. Unfortunately, I was not born with morning beauty and the smeared make up shadowing my face was not helpful. Memories of the night prior imaged in my mind: the moment I walked into the club with Ben, the drinks and dancing, Ben’s urgency to get home, Harry saving me from what could have been a destructive night, and Harry helping me to bed. I have to admit, I was thankful to have those green, intimidating eyes on me all night. Last night Harry asked me if I remembered him as his best friend. Maybe I have been wrong about all of this. I wanted to be able to remember but I had no more than my recent memories of him in mind. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to try to remember anything after so many years of having absent childhood memories
.
After showering absentmindedly, I walked back into my room of gray walls. I changed into an outfit appropriate for the weather of both locations I would be in that day.I went around my room, picking clothes up and shoving them into my bag to take to England. I know; amazing packing skills. After ten minutes of packing, I walked towards the kitchen.

After making myself a hot cup of green tea, I took a look at the clock. Only 7:30. I had plenty of work to do before I left for England. I am not sure how long I will be gone; I never bought a ticket back to Seattle because I wasn’t sure how much of England I could take before I would pack up and leave.

With my tea in hand, I made my way into the living room, sliding my socks covered feet on the smooth hardwood. I approached the couch and felt my mouth drop and the adrenaline rush through my body. The next thing I knew, my cup shattered to the ground, waking my guest on the couch. He looked up at me while running his hand through his long and untamed head of hair. He smiled in amusement as his eyed trailed down to the mess at my feet. I looked down at the splattered liquid joined with black bits of ceramic which was once mug I designed a year ago for my store’s winter sale. My socks were now soaked, but at least the liquid warmed my feet.

“Were you bringing me tea? Well aren’t you a thoughtful host,” He chuckled.

“Morning. I’m actually a horrible host, I will admit. The fact that I just dropped your supposed tea and woke you up makes me even worse. Why are you here Harry?”

“Well you haven’t yelled at me yet so I don’t think you’re too bad. I uh wanted to make sure you got to sleep alright last night and I stayed in case you needed anything,” he said before checking his phone.

“Thanks… For everything last night,” I said awkwardly before getting a towel from the linens closet in the hall.I came back and saw he moved from sitting on the couch to standing in front of the window which took up half of the wall in the living room. I started wiping up the mess I made and he turned around.

“Don’t worry about it. I was bored in that club. Your boyfriend is a prat though.”

I laughed. “He’s not my boyfriend.”

He nodded slowly before turning back to the view. I walked over to drop off the towel in the dirty laundry and picked up the broom when I heard Kelsey come through the door.
“Elllllllll-oh hi Harry!” I heard Kelsey in her normal manner.

“Morning, Kelsey,” I heard Harry before I walked into the living room.

“Hey Kels, I didn’t think you would be back this early,” I said before I proceeded to clean up my mess.

She smirked and rose her eyebrow with a head nod to Harry, who was focusing again on the outside world of Seattle with his back faced to us.

I gave her a death glare before she answered. “Yeah, well I need to get you to the airport and if I stayed any longer at Justin’s I would never leave.”

“You don’t have to take me. I-“

“Why are you going to the airport?” Harry cut me off, turning to face us.

“I’m heading back to England for holiday.” Kelsey slowly crept into her room.

He nodded before turning back to the window. “Me and the lads are all flying out to London today.”

“Oh,” I wasn’t sure how to answer him. “You really like the view huh?”

He simply nodded.

“It’s the main reason I got the place. It’s way better than having a telly,” I explained.

“You don’t have one?”

I shook my head. “Kelsey has one in her room, but I don’t really need one. It’s peaceful without all that rubbish.”

“You are still very odd,” Harry smiled before walking to the couch to put on his Chelsea boots. Still?

“I get that a lot,” I laughed. The situation was growing to be awkward. Harry made me nervous for some reason, but he also became very short and quiet like something I said earlier flipped a switch. Did he realize how weird I was? Did I scare him off? Why do I even care?

“Stop overthinking, Ellie,” he snapped me out of my thoughts. “Well, I have a plan to catch at 11 and I still have to pack,” Harry said before getting up off the couch.

“Oh yeah. Shite. I never asked you if you wanted tea or coffee or breakfast. I really am a horrible host.”

He laughed with his dimples poking through his smile and started walking to the door. “No thank you. I have better get going.”

“Okay,” I said following him to the door.

“Bye Ellie. See you soon,” he said before walking out.
I watched his long legs carry himself down the hall until he disappeared in the elevator. See you soon?

“Are you sure you want to do this?” Kelsey asked while she pulled me in for a hug. We were at the Sea-Tac in the middle of numerous travelers buzzing around us.

“Yes, Kels. I have to go or I might be late.” I lied. I wanted to leave before I could second guess myself enough to stay in Seattle.

“Okay call me when you land.”

“Of course. Thanks Kelsey. Oh, and take care of my baby.”
Kelsey laughed and jingled the keys to my Jeep in her hand before walking out of the airport.

I was lucky enough to get a window seat for the long travel back to England. I tuned the out the captain as he went over the usual introductory procedures. On the flight, I tried to work on new designs and ideas but my mind kept wandering. In a matter of hours, I would be in the place I tried to stay far away from. I thought about how selfish I was. I never came back to England not because of the accident, not because of the place of my parent’s death, not the memories that came with the incident six years ago. But more because of the memories I didn’t have and all the people who would look at me differently and who knew the old me, someone I didn’t even know. Selfish. But I was doing this for my grandparents and then I would leave. I would have to just set my mind to thinking this Holiday would be a happy one and I would forget about all my problems. That was something easy for me-forgetting.To add to all that, I started thinking about Harry. I’m guessing we met before the accident, but best friends? I think it would be easier if I just stopped thinking about him or seeing him. There was no point in trying to rekindle our, so he says, friendship.

Getting off the plane, I headed for the doors, happy all I didn’t have to wait in the carousal line for luggage. Something-well someone caught my eye as I was walking. The familiar curls wrapped in a scarf. As if he could sense me staring confusedly staring at him, he looked up. Harry smiled and waved and I wondered how he had not been noticed or where all the paparazzi were. He picked up his bags and joined me, my feet glued to the airport floor near the door.

“I have been waiting for you to come in,” I heard him. He waited three hours for me?

“Ready?” Harry asked.

“For what?” I asked, still dumbfounded.

“We’re going home.”
