Chapter 2

Ellie Hoover

I woke up the next morning to the horrid noises from my alarm clock. 5:45 AM. Great. Somehow I managed to drag myself out of bed and to start getting dressed in my workout gear.

After I grabbed by headphones and phone, I slipped on my shoes and I quietly left the apartment, containing my indolent roommate still snoozing in her bed. I plugged my headphones in and filled my mind with the pulsating sounds of my upbeat playlist, a necessity for my easily distracted mind on long runs. I started running only in hopes to warm my freezing limbs in this harsh morning temperature. It was the middle of November and the usual chilly Seattle weather was intensified in the Fall. I didn’t mind though as I was somewhat used to the cold in England-again from what I could remember. The doctors said it was possible to regain my full memory, but they were never sure. It has been six years since and I still don’t remember most things in my life. I have just accepted the fact that my past will never be a part of me.

I started doing sprint intervals once I felt like my body was warm enough. After twenty minutes of running, I headed back to the apartment to finish my workout with my usual core routine. Once I felt my body was screaming at me to stop, I took a shower and got ready for the day. I decided on dressing in something casual and comfy, considering I had nothing to do but some at home work.

It was Kelsey’s interview day and I wanted to ease her anxiety as much as I could before she had to leave. I looked at the clock and saw it was eight and remembered Kelsey was still asleep. Being the wonderful roommate I was, I sauntered into the living room and hooked up the speakers, turning them up all the way. In no less than ten seconds, the entire apartment was immersed in Blink-182, the perfect wake up call for the lazy bum I call my best friend.
I proceeded to make my way into the kitchen, doing my best to clear off the counters of the endless supply of sweets made the night prior. I will admit I am an absolute nightmare when it comes to the kitchen, but I can make the basics of breakfast. I managed to cook the entire meal without burning the food or the kitchen down. Just as I was setting the plates down on the breakfast bar, Kelsey walked in the kitchen, freshly showered and awake.
“Holy crap, Ellie, my ears are bleeding. Either turn this shit off or turn it down,” she yelled over the music as she sat down in front of one of the plates overflowing with food.Grabbing the stereo remote, I turned the music down and switched it to the calmer sounds of Coldplay.
“Hey! This shit, as you call it, did its job in waking your lazy arse up,” I responded as I started making her a cup of coffee and green tea for myself.

“Whatever. I don’t really understand your music tastes. Thank you though for everything,” she smiled. That’s the thing about Kelsey and I-we are complete opposites, anywhere from appearances all the way down to music tastes. My music choices are all over the place but I usually find myself coming back to alternative sounds. Kelsey is more of a pop, high energy music type of person. It fits our personalities perfectly. Kelsey is nonstop and outgoing; whereas, I am calm and easygoing. Somehow we put up with each other enough to be best friends and to have been able to live with each other.

“You’re welcome. You are going to be incredible today and they are going to definitely love you. Trust me.” I set down the hot drinks and sat next to her.

“Hopefully better than these eggs,” she added, grimacing.

“That bad?” I laughed and took a bite for myself. They weren’t bad at all, personally. “You just don’t like good scrambled eggs.

“No, I don’t like dried out eggs like you, weirdo. I am going to go get dressed. Thanks!” She called out as she walked down the hallway with her coffee in hand.

As I finished the dishes, I heard Kelsey walking over. Of course she looked amazing, even when she was dressed professionally.

“All right, well I’m off. Thank you again El. I’ll either call you or talk to you when I get home. Depends on how bad it goes.”

“You’re barmy. You will do amazing. And don’t think like that and it is going to go well. Be the confident person I know you are and rock it. Remember if worse comes to worse you keep working with me.” I smiled. “I don’t know why you are so nervous though. Doesn’t Justin’s dad own the company?”

“I love you but I don’t want to work for you anymore though and I need this job so I can help you pay rent a little here! And just because my boyfriend’s dad owns the company does not mean I will get the job!”

“Whatever. You’re going to be late. I’ll talk to you later. Good luck!”
She opened the door and I remembered the weather.
“Wait, Kels,” I said, grabbing my keys and running over to her in the front doorway. “Take my car. You don’t want the possibility of ruining that outfit, do you?”
“Thank you, but don't get mad if I crash your baby. It's huge. Bye!” She yelled. And with that I took the rest of the day to make some phone calls and draw out some new designs.

“Ellieeeeeeeeee!” I heard someone shriek right before I was being crushed by more than a hundred more pounds of annoying.
“What?” I managed, waking up from my nap.
“Guess what?” She said, struggling to hide a smile from her face.
“I don’t know. I can’t think with you crushing my bones.”

“I got the job! They hired me right there and they said if things go smoothly with me they are putting me on a huge project soon. I got it! I start tomorrow!” She started dancing around the room and soon pulled me up to join.

“I think this calls for a night out. Wait, no. You can’t be hung over on your first day of work. Let’s just go out to dinner,” I said.
“Yes!” She said, clapping her hands. “I’ll tell Justin to come. Oooh, tell your boy toy to come too!”
“Ugh no. I am not bringing Ben. We don’t do dinner and dates, remember.”
“Bring him so you don’t look like a pathetic third wheel! Please, for me,” she pouted.
“I thought you didn’t like him,” I countered.
“I don’t but that way I can bring Justin and it won’t be awkward for you.”
“Fine" I caved.
