The Flashbacks

Chapter seven

I look up at him quietly, shifting on my feet and biting my cheek. My mind was racing as I thought of infinite things he could have to ask me; logical things he might need to be asking me. What could he possibly have to ask me? We've only talked once and in my point of view, it ended pretty horribly.
I could feel as he stared down at me, looking up at him nervously as his eyes pierced through mine. I gulp nervously, blinking my eyes and breaking the stare down as I look at the ground again. Quit thinking crazy things, Kaitlyn! I think to myself.

"Go ahead." I murmur nervously, beads of sweats covering my palms as I wipe them on my jeans; hands shaking horribly. The air became short in my lungs, breathing erratically as his lips part and he begins to speak to me.

Kaitlyn's pov

I wait by my car, leaning against the hood as I see a sports car pull into the lot, parking right beside my Jeep. Niall steps out as the ignition stops, my lips parting in awe.

"I see your career went well." I whisper, looking at him quietly as I stand up straight from my leaned position on the car.

"Professional football quarterback, I'd say so." He smiles softly, nodding his head and walking in the direction of the school. "Did you ever get the job as a pharmasist?" he asks.

I follow after him, looking around at the old courtyard. "Yeah I did." I nod, waiting for him to unlock the doors of the school.

"Do you like your job?" he asks curiously, helping me into the building and flicking on the lights.
I cough as dust falls from the ceiling, nodding my head. "Yeah, I love my job."

I watch as he walks down the hall, flicking on all the lights in the building. I follow behind him quietly, tracing my fingers over the peeling walls.

He pulls out a cigarette, putting it between his lips and lighting it as my eyes go wide, looking at him in shock.

"Niall! Are you crazy?!" I say loudly, looking at him as he takes a drag and puffs it out in the opposite direction of my face.

"Nah, I've been smoking for a while. It isn't that big of a deal, anyways." He shrugs, walking down the hall slowly, looking at all of the filled trophy cases.

"You could get lung cancer!" I say, following hot on his heels and looking around viciously.

"Kaitlyn, it isn't that big of a deal. I've been smoking for ten years, it isn't a big deal." He points out, shaking his head and taking a longer drag, puffing it out.

"You're 38 Niall." I state quietly, closing my eyes and stopping a few feet away from him.

"Yeah, so are you Kaitlyn." he says, turning to face me. "You've ignored me for years and now you think you can come back and tell me what and what not to do?!" he says, flicking the ash off the end of the cigarette.

I step back from him, shaking my head. "I went to college. I have an excuse to do that, Niall!" I say, frustrated.

"Oh, for twenty years?! You went for twenty years, huh?" he questions, scoffing lightly. "I don't believe you. I was just something someone does in high school and you know it." he says, walking further down the hall towards the cafeteria.

-Flashback-

Niall's pov

We sat the rest of the ride to school in silence, noticeably taking glances at one another the whole ride, smiles being shared between us.

The bus squealed as it stopped in front of the broken down school, smoke emitting from the back as the doors flung open. I retrieve my bag, helping her up and out of the seat before making my way down the aisle of the bus.

I climb down the stairs, stepping off the bus and looking around as her small frame makes its way into the gym. I smile softly, going to the gym after her. I sit down in the bleachers with the other football players, laughing.

"Yo, fresh meat!" they call out. "Do we finally got a good quarterback?" they laugh, looking down at me.

"Yeah, I think so actually!" I smile, nodding my head.

They laugh, shaking their heads. "Sure, you think. We need a "I know I am"! We'll se you at practice." they say, walking past me and going to class.

I stand up slowly, grabbing my backpack and walking to class. I stop in front of my locker, fumbling with the combination as someone pushes me into the locker and laughs. I sigh, putting my stuff away and going to my homeroom. I sit down, looking around as I see a beautiful brunette sit in the seat beside me.

I tap my foot under the desk, viciously hitting my pencil against it before leaning over onto her desk and smiling brightly. "I'm Niall." I whisper.

I look at her as she stares at me for a while, waving my hand in her face as she calls out "here!" when the teacher calls her name. She brushes the hair from her eyes, looking at me.
"Um, we met on the bus this morning." she states quietly, looking in her lap. Shit.

"Oh, Kaitlyn right? Sorry, it's all been a blur for me this morning." I apologize.

She nods her head, lips parting slightly. "That's my name." she whispers, grabbing her things. "And yeah, me too. It's alright Niall." she says, getting up and heading off to PE.

-End of flashback-

Kaitlyn's pov

My feet carry me down the hall as I stop in my tracks, remembering the night at the club, my lips parting as I close my eyes.

-Flashback, first year of college-

Niall's pov

I pull up to the club, stepping out of my car and slamming the door, going inside and making a beeline for the bar in the back of the loud, sweaty building. I sit down on one of the stools, ordering a bottle of vodka and waiting for it as I look around the dance floor.

I pay the bartender, taking the bottle and chugging it down, flicking my eyes over to the door. I pull the bottle from my lips, setting it on the counter and making my way to the door.

"Kaitlyn!" I call out, walking up to her as a man pulls her to him and kissing her roughly and I step back, shaking my head over and over. I walk back to the bar, sitting back down and finishing the vodka. I order three wormed shots, closing my eyes and gulping them down, clinking the glasses to the counter.

I shoot up from my seat as I see the man push her against the wall, causing her eyes to squeeze shut in pain. Everyone continues dancing, grinding against each other viciously as I push my way through the crowd, shoving him off roughly.

"Think you're gonna do that again, asshhole?!" I yell, punching him in the face and pushing him down, kicking him in the stomach. I sit on top of him, punching him over and over. I slam his head against the ground as he coughs up blood, closing his eyes.

"Stop! Stop I love him!" she screams as I hear sirens outside and I pull away, looking at her quietly and pushing back through the crowd.
