Never Is A Promise

As the boys headed off to their sound check Aly and I drove off to a local clinic to get my check up. When we arrived the doctors looked at my chart realizing I was 3 weeks late for a check up. I groaned having completely forgotten with the tour going on. There was so much to do losing track of my personal life and schedule had just sort of been instinctual since I was so immersed in the boy’s schedule and life.

The next hour was spent running tests and taking blood samples and making sure I was still healthy. In my health history 3 weeks could be a huge difference. They checked everything, while Aly chewed me out for neglecting my appointments when I had only just gotten healthy again. “How could you forget something so important Mick!” Aly yelled stopping, “I almost lost you once, we all did, I don’t want to go through it again, don’t put us through that again.” Aly said I immediately knew that by ‘us’ she meant herself and Harry. I got why she was mad, she was scared and frankly so was I but she knew me and she knew I didn’t want the pity or the coddling. She was right I’d much rather her be mad at me for my neglecting my own health than have both of us scared and freaking out, she’d been that person for me from the start.

I looked up at her, “I know Aly, I’m sorry, I really have been trying to stay on top of things but with the tour everything is so hectic I got carried away and forgot about it. It won’t happen again.” I said.

“You better hope it doesn’t” Aly said walking with me as the doctors wheeled me toward the screening room to do a full body scan with the radiologists in the other room since my case was so severe before if something had changed in the last few weeks they wanted to know right away.

As I walked back to my room the Radiologist walked in. “So its nothing serious, yet, but there are a few things that aren’t settling very well with me on your scans. Normally I’d leave it alone but because of your previous experience with cancer I’d like to start you on a low dose chemo regiment for the next 2 months, 4 treatments over all.” He said I nodded.

“Ok, may I see the scans? And what parts you’re talking about?” He nodded pulling them out and pointing to a small clump of dots in a lymph node. “Can we start the Chemo today?” I asked he nodded, calling for the nurses. “The faster the better, I have my job to get back to we’re only allowed to leave for a short bit of time.”

“I have the laptop for twitter questions, and Paul had us on a live feed so we can watch, they can’t see us but we can see them.” Aly explained as the doctors looked a little worried about the time constraints.

“Ok that’ll work.” I said as Aly set up the laptop on the table next to us as we went through the questions while the nurses hooked up my IV.

“I hate this” Aly said looking over at me.

“I know, I do too,” I told her sadly, as my phone buzzed I picked it up, Liam.

“Where are you and Aly?” he asked, it almost time for questions and we haven’t seen you since we left for sound check.

“We’ve already got the questions lined up and chosen, I’m at an appointment and Aly is with me for it. I’ll tell you all later.” I said, “Now get off the phone while on stage!!” I said laughing.

“How’d you-?” He started looking around the stage, and audience.

“I have eyes everywhere Liam… well and Paul set up a video stream for us” I explained. Hanging up on him. He shook his head putting his phone back in his pocket. Aly and I watched the rest of the concert and a movie by the time the IV was done.

The doctor gave me a reminder slip for the date my next chemo would be on, as well as all the information the next doctor would need to know. As we were about to leave he brought out a set of tags a bracelet and necklace. “Pick one out, its probably best that you wear an identification tag just in case.” I nodded picking out the ones I wanted. “I’ll have these sent to you with your test results.“ I nodded as he continued to speak while I signed myself out of the hospital. “So Ms Dearth where should we send your copy of the test results once they all come back?” I looked at the blank spot I couldn’t put our address we didn’t have a mail box, and my parents were moving, I picked up the pen knowing the address to send them too, the office. It was the easiest place for me to pick up my mail, weird yes, but simple.

We got back to the bus late and as soon as we climbed on the bus started toward our next destination, Spain. We started to head to our room upstairs when we saw the boys sitting at the table watching us. They all looked really tired waiting up for us. “You said you’d explain on the phone.” Liam said. “So where’d you two disappear to?” He asked.

Aly sighed, “Ask her,” she said pointing to me “I’m going to go to bed, she exhausted me.” she muttered walking away and up to the room.

All the eyes turned to me. I took a deep breath “So long story short, I missed a doctor check up from almost a month ago, and I started to have some weird symptoms so Aly took me in today.

“And?” Louis asked. His eyes wide, I knew this changed a lot within the situation and deal I had with him and Liam regarding Harry. He exchanged the same look with Liam and I knew we’d have to talk after about this.

“They ran a bunch of tests and gave me some medicine which took a really long time.” I said hoping to just go to bed, since I was already feeling sick from the chemo.

“Did it come back?” Zayn asked having remembered that when we had all first met I had just been coming out of the hospital from battling cancer.

“Maybe,” I said, “They already put a preventive measure in place, since its to early to tell, but hopefully that stops it before it can really start up again.” I said walking upstairs to change.
I heard a knock on the door. I opened the door it was Louis, Liam. I sighed nodding to them as I grabbed a blanket. As I stepped back to the door Harry was coming up the short flight of stairs too and moved into the room hugging me. “Head to bed I have to talk to Louis and Liam for a few then I’ll be back up.” I told him resting my head on his chest. He nodded I leaned up the peck his lips before moving out of the room leaning heavily on the railing.

We moved back to the kitchen area toward the front of the bus “Mick this changes things a lot.” Louis said, “Mick you have to tell him before he loses you again! Let him have closure this time around you can’t keep running every time you get scared and leave everyone that cares about you behind.”

“I know, I have til a week after tour ends to tell him, Simon gave me til then.” I told Louis, Liam nodded already having heard this.

“The sooner the better Mick, you aren’t gonna be alone in this, you have both of us here too.” Liam said as him and Louis pulled me into a warm bear hug holding me close. “This isn’t just him anymore it effects us all, none of us want you to go or see either of you hurt.”

“I’ll try to tell him tomorrow.” I said standing up on shaky legs to go to bed. They nodded heading toward their own bunks. I climbed the steps to my room where Harry was already in my bed waiting. I tossed the blanket back into the small chest walking over and crawling into the bed, Harry’s arms immediately adjusting even in his sleeping state to hold me.
