Summer Heat

Prologue: Louis

Louis’s father hit him again, stinging Louis’s left cheek. Louis had a black eye and a bloody lip.

“You flash! You poor excuse for a boy! I didn’t raise you to be a flash!” yelled Louis’s father. Louis’s mother hadn’t come home from work yet so there was nothing to save him now. Louis licked his lips and swallowed. Blood.

“I’m sorry Dad. I thought... I thought since I was your son you would except me for who I am,” said Louis, flinching as his father brought his fist back for another blow.

“William!” yelled Louis’s mother from the doorway. She dropped all the groceries and ran to her son’s side. Louis’s father put his arm down and stared angrily at the both of them, “What’s wrong with you?! This is our son! Why are you beating him like this?” cried Louis’s mother.

“Our son is gay! He’s a bloody flash!” roared Louis’s father. Louis let a tear slip down his cheek at the harshness of his father’s words. Louis’s mother held him tighter.

“Well, I accept that. It’s his choice, not ours. Or should I say mine. I’m getting a divorce and you’re getting out!” yelled Louis’s mother, ushering Louis into his parents room and grabbing Louis’s fathers clothes, shoes and briefcase before slamming the door. Louis sat down on the bed and touched his lip gingerly. He definitely had a busted lip. He felt something drip down onto his lip. Louis’s nose was probably broken too. Louis’s mother stormed in again, grabbing all of his fathers things and rushing out. This happened quite frequently. But Louis’s mother never saw these things happen, so nothing was ever said or done about it. Louis started to sob quietly into his hands, but cut it off short.

“Get the fuck out and never come back you bloody bastard!” Louis’s mother yelled. Louis stood up and peeked out of the door, seeing his mother close the door and turn. They locked eyes and Louis ran to his mother, crying and sputtering.

“I’m s-s-sorry m-mum,” said Louis, nestling into his mothers warming embrace, “I d-didn’t m-mean to upset him,” finished Louis, looking up at his mother.

“You didn’t do it on purpose. You’re only fifteen for god’s sakes,” said Louis’s mother soothingly, “You are perfect Louis and I love you. No matter if you’re straight or not,” finished Louis’s mother, brushing back his hair and kissing his forehead. They sat like that for a moment before Louis’s lip began to throb and nose began to bleed again.

“Mum, I think I might need a doctor,” said Louis wincing as his mother ran her fingertips over his nose gently. Louis’s mother nodded and gently moved Louis, grabbing her keys from the counter and her purse.

“Alright love, let’s go.”
