I Don't Understand

What...

Monday, 6/15/10
I was sitting on my bed, day two in the new house. Three if you count our living room campout. I got up and changed out of my pajamas... into more pajamas. Am I the only one who does that? I had unpacked all of my clothes and everything else I brought with me. It took a while, though. This morning I woke up, made my bed, and... yeah that's it. I've just been sitting on my bed with this super old laptop I bought myself last year, looking at summer jobs. I really want to get a job. Maybe I could be a barista at some coffee place, meet some cute guy, and ride off into the sunset. Or, I debated, maybe I could just forget it because it's not going to happen. I shut my laptop and decided to go down for breakfast. I mean, it's 11:30, but it's also a Summer Monday. Nobody cares. I went downstairs to the kitchen and kissed Mum on the cheek "Mornin, Mum." She smiled, "Good morning to you too, my little sunshine!" She took another look at me "Well, maybe not so little after all." I grabbed a frying pan from a big open drawer and two eggs from the fridge. I turned on the smallest burner of the gas stove and set some butter to melt over the heat in my frying pan. Once it was sizzling I cracked in the eggs and covered the pan with a lid. "So you named the baby Lillian?" I queried. "Mm, yes. Lillian Zoe Jean Cortez." Wow. It's beautiful. "Jean?" "That's her birth mother's maiden name. Her birth mother's name is Zoe Jean. Dad and I thought it would be good, We don't want to hide from her that she's adopted, we wanted her to grow up knowing her story." I thought for a moment. "Is the birth Mom okay with that being her name?" "Miss Jean loves the idea. But she doesn't want to be in the picture. You know, She was given a few families to choose from for her baby, and she chose us!" Mom handed me a folder from the kitchen island with all the information about Lillian. I took my fried eggs off the heat -they were finished- and started reading through the folder. I stopped a moment to put my eggs on a plate and run some water over the pan in the sink. I grabbed myself a fork and went back to my reading. It struck me how brave this young woman is. She's 19 years old, and the biological father is out of the picture, but she went through with the pregnancy. Abortion never entered her mind. I don't know if I could do that. Wow these eggs are good...There were some ultra-sounds of the baby in various stages of growth, and allot of paperwork. There were also certifications about Mom and Dad. "Wait, you took a training course this year? I thought you took one before." "They have to be re-done every so often in order to stay an active participant in the adoption program. We don't have to take any more unless we want to adopt another child." I silently nodded and went over to wash my dishes. "Oh, and Angelina? The pool is full now, so your siblings have gone swimming." With that I booked it upstairs to get changed. I closed the door and went into my closet for my swimsuit. Boy am I grateful my door has a lock, I would hate having to change in the bathroom, and I definitely don't trust my family to knock. I pulled on my Blue Gingham One Piece, and grabbed my white mesh coverup, as well as my red striped beach towel. I ran down the stairs and out the sliding glass door in the kitchen. Yeah, I'm not going to bother with sunscreen. I dropped my things on a lawn chair and dived into the pool. It's eight feet deep, with two-foot under and four-foot under steps wrapping all around the rim. So Brayleigh and Mackenzie have pool noodles just in case, but they're pretty strong swimmers. I surface again and push my hair out of my eyes, swimming over to the three-foot step next to Damian and sitting down. The water touches my chin, so I kneel instead. Oops. I think I splashed Damian when I dove in. "Harry, this is my kid sister, Angelina." Hey. Kid? What? I lean over and see there's somebody sitting on Damian's other side that I didn't see before. Wow he's attractive. Harry waves at me "Hi. I'm Harry. Nice to meet you, Angelina." He has a deep voice... He extends a hand over Damian and I shake it tentatively, but I can feel him giving me a slow once-over. What.....
