Summer Nights Romance.

Chapter I.

The plane’s window was chilled over as it flew over the clouds and Collins allowed her eyes to open and her interrupted nap to cease. It was anything but restful and she had never longed for a bed, even a couch, so badly in her life. Her neck ached and her eyes wore bags of restlessness as a reminder of the creak in her neck.

A small ding came announcing their arrival to the Austin airport. Collins yawned and fell back in her seat awaiting the descent. The landing was rocky and anything but reassuring. Please fly with us again soon…. A stewardess said curtly, almost reading the passengers minds assuring her they would never make the same mistake.

The airport was bustling with the usual businessmen. It was late May and Collins was on her way to spend some time with her older sister in her college town of Austin Texas. Reaching baggage claim was a long and anticipated moment for Collins, but when she reached it her older sibling was nowhere in sight. Instead a boy with a sign saying COLLINS stood aimlessly looking around scratching his neck. A blonde bombshell wandered by him and he stared after her hungrily. He looked reluctant to stay behind, cursing himself to stay still.

“And you are?” Collins spat eyeing the boy. He had long brown hair and a five o’clock shadow that looked intentional. His blue eyes were bright but looked tired. He was on the smaller side and sleeve tattoos were peeking through his denim jacket sleeves.

“Collins?”

“That’s me. Now it’s your turn,” Collins retorted, eyeing the boy again. He took this as his turn to do the same to her. She stood dangerously still, standing her ground.

“I’m Louis. I was sent on Devin’s behalf, she had something in her sorority. She sends her deepest apologies and her newest boyfriend,” he smiled proudly.

“That’s why I just saw you staring at that girl’s ass,” Collins said, taken aback not believing him.

“I was simply admiring the design on the back pocket of her jeans,” Louis said all too calmly, almost rehearsed.

“Oh, that’s rich,” Collins scoffed. Suddenly a boy emerged from the crowd with a dazzling smile.

“Hey there, you must be the famous Collins,” he continued. Louis’ eyes remained on Collins.

“I am… who are you?”

“I’m Calum,” he offered his hand as he fixed his thick dark hair. His deep brown eyes danced over Collins with a confused look. “I’m Devin’s boyfriend?”

“Oh?” Collins looked between the two boys who stood in front of her.

“Devin didn’t mention me?” Calum looked hurt when suddenly another boy appeared.

“Sorry, the line in there was ridiculous. But I see you’ve met Calum and Louis. I’m Liam, Devin’s real boyfriend. I can only imagine what they’ve said in the five minutes you’ve landed, but it’s my pleasure to finally meet you.”

Calum and Louis were left snickering behind Liam who looked more respectable and had kind soft brown eyes. Liam proceeded to lead Collins out of the airport and to a car in the parking lot.

“Shotgun!” Calum bellowed, lunging to the passenger seat of what appeared to be Liam’s car.

“Is that okay with you Collins?” Liam clarified.

“Yeah, why not,” Collins nodded, knowing she didn’t have a choice.

Liam drove the car out of the parking lot and onto the fast moving highway where Calum saw as an invitation to raise the volume of the radio to blasting extremes. Collins rolled her eyes at the headache that began to throb in her left temple. Almost as if to read Collins mind, Liam reached over and lowered it to a barely audible mumble.

“How was your flight?” Liam offered conversation.

“It was decent, bumpy but decent,” Collins played along. Louis scoffed lightly, ignoring Collins it seemed by staring intently out the window.

“Well, are you excited to be in Austin?”

“Utterly thrilled,” Collins forced.

“So Collins,” Calum began, “you don’t have strings back home right? Where is back home by the way?”

“Concord, New Hampshire… and strings?” Collins said carefully.

“Yeah, you know… boyfriends?” Calum wiggled his eyebrows.

“Oh, no. I don’t.”

“Well in that case, how about you join me to the frat party tonight?” Calum returned eagerly. Liam hit the back of his friend’s head all too hard. But Collins only laughed.

“Devin won’t let Collins go out with you two, you can count on that. Or any of the other boys for that matter.”

“Devin doesn’t control me,” Collins argued. Liam cast a wary look in his rearview mirror at the stubborn girl in his backseat.

“How old are you Collins?” Calum wondered, Louis looked over his shoulder as well breaking his staring contest with the scenery.

“Eighteen,” she lied. She was still seventeen.

“I thought you were younger,” Liam whispered, exiting the highway.

“This settles it. She’s old enough to do whatever… and whoever… she wants,” Calum returned to his seat and competition with Liam and the radio at that moment leaving Louis to stare at Collins.

“Come to the party tonight.” was all he said.

The sorority house was larger than Collins expected. It was beautifully bricked and stone lined the front door and windows. The lawn was neatly cut and the bushes lining the front walk trimmed.

“Devin should be inside the living room,” Liam said, motioning to the window left of the front door. “Don’t worry about the bags.”

As Collins nodded in thanks she saw Louis try to escape her luggage and ease through the front door but Liam beckoned him back to help out. Suddenly the door opened and out rushed Devin, followed by a flood of what appeared to be her minions.

“Collins!” Devin shrieked, her large brown eyes battering at her sister as she embracing her tightly.

“Devin,” Collins sounded far less enthused but no one seemed phased by her lack of high pitch squeals, much like the ones falling off of her sisters perfectly red stained lips.

“Oh meet the sisters,” Devin turned to see the others around her, all in pristine dresses and curled hair, intact make up, and magazine like smiles and stances. The group intimidated her as they stood in a half circle awaiting their introduction as if Collins was royalty.

“It’s truly a pleasure.”

“What a beauty you are.”

“I’m truly honored to finally meet you.”

And so many more processed bullshit lines came from them all. One girl hugged Collins and her name was Evelyn, apparently Devin's best friend and a girl named Riley who seemed less enthused than Collins. Collins immediately respected that and liked the quiet girl. Devin then turned to Liam and pecked his lips gracefully.

“I see you’ve met Liam. He’s truly a gem,” Devin oozed, taking Collins shoulders and leading her inside.

“A true catch,” Collins disguised her tone in mockery of her sister’s but once again no one noticed, all of the others just nodded in pathetic agreement as if cloned.

“Hey babes,” Louis crooned as he winked.

“What’s he doing here?” Devin whispered to Liam through gritted teeth.

“Oh don’t worry, he offered to come pick up Collins with me and Calum,” Liam shrugged, kissing her cheek to reassure her.

All of the girls instantly became giggly around Louis and they almost clapped even when entering his presence. Collins ogled at how pathetic they were all being, true sorority girls.

“We’re the most pristine sorority on all of campus,” Devin said proudly and then turned to the girls, “so please stop acting so foolish when that free loader enters the room. It’s like you’re a bunch twelve year old girls at a boy band concert,” Devin added shrilly. All of the girls looked at their feet and around at each other shamefully.

“Where will I be staying?” Collins spoke, breaking the tension. Even Liam looked annoyed at his girlfriend’s outburst.

“Oh, about that,” Devin approached Collins regretfully. “Well we have many newly opened beds, but I think you’ll prefer the basement. But don’t worry! There is a fully furnished basement with a nice futon. I set it up so it’s all ready for you, and I think it’s more your style.”

Sure enough the basement was her style. Devin even went the extra mile to buy Collins posters of The 1975, Nirvana, and others. Collins looked at her newly artificial sister and could have sworn she saw the old Devin come out slightly.

“Devin, it’s utterly brilliant,” Collins said truthfully. Devin sighed, looking relieved. Devin had left her minions upstairs as she showed her sister her new address.

“Okay well, don’t worry about the preppiness in here,” Devin said suddenly looking and sounding like her old self. “I haven’t changed that much, it’s just kind of so we don’t recruit total dipshits, you know? We’re cool. But hey, I noticed that Louis picked you up… what do you think of him?”

“Louis? I didn’t really think much about it,” Collins shrugged, confused of where this conversation was headed.

“Well uh… I want you to stay away from him, is that cool?” Devin clarified, not leaving her sister a choice.

“Already done,” Collins assured, giving a tight smile.

“Thanks. I’ve missed you a lot,” Devin responded.

“Me too.”
