One Way or Another

four.

I feel oddly rested when I wake up in the morning. No dreams to recall and only the comfort of my bed and the sun between my curtains to wake me up. This never happens anymore. I have a hard time sleeping in because I'm so used to waking up early with Sophie. She usually comes in here when she wakes up, which is usually at around 7:30. Not that early I guess, but still earlier than someone usually wants on a Sunday.

Sophie!

She always comes to my room, where is she? Where is she!?

I throw the blankets back and jump out of bed, throwing my door open and sprinting to her bedroom. Not there. What the hell? Where is she?!

I run out of the hall and towards the kitchen when I see she isn't in the living room. I try to swing the door open but I push on the wrong side and run into it, my nose and forehead hitting the wood.

"Ouch," I groan, putting my hand on my nose. I walk into the kitchen and breathe a sigh of relief when I see Sophie sitting in her booster seat at the table. I rush over to her and put my hands on her cheeks. "Soph, there you are! Mum was scared." She smiles as I kiss her forehead.

"Why mummy?" she asks, fiddling with the chunks of banana in front of her.

"Did you run into the door?"

Shit. I completely forgot Harry was here and I am in no way dressed appropriately for this. I slowly turn to face him, straightening up and tugging my shorts down. The smirk on his face makes my stomach flip, shirtless and flipping french toast. He pulls off the dad thing well.

"A little," I say, blushing and hoping he can't tell that I'm not wearing a bra. He laughs.

"You totally ran into the door," he says, laughing quite loud. Sophie giggles as well behind me. "Why were you running?"

"I forgot you were here and Sophie...I don't know, it was stupid. I thought she was gone or something."

"Well she's right here. Do you want breakfast?"

"Yes please. I'm just going to change first."

"Alright," he says. His eyes quickly shoot down to my legs before he looks back at the pan. But maybe I imagined that.

I look back at Sophie as I walk out of the kitchen and back to my room. I like this family thing, I think I could get used to it. Even just one night a week, it's better than nothing. Watching Sophie fall asleep on Harry's chest was the most adorable thing I've ever seen. I wanted nothing more than to sit on that couch and cuddle with them, but that's not something I can do anymore. I watched them together the entire time. Before they fell asleep Sophie was staring at the screen her with her thumb in her mouth and Harry was watching her, a small smile on his face the entire time while he occasionally brushed her hair away from her eyes. It's getting so long. I think I may have to take her for her first haircut.

I put a bra on and some sweats instead of my shorts and head back to the kitchen. Harry is setting a bunch of food on the table; french toast, sausage, a few bowls of different cut up fruit, and juice. He sits down after wiping Sophie's hands clean and I shake my head a little. She's going to be a mess in thirty seconds.

"Hey," he says, noticing me walking towards them. "I hope you're hungry 'cuz I think I may have gone a little overboard." He looks at the food and laughs a little.

"Maybe," I agree, sitting on the chair beside Sophie. She holds out a piece of banana and I lean forward so she can put it in my mouth. "Thanks."

"Daddy like bananas," she tells me. "Did you know mummy?"

I look at Harry across the table and his eyes linger on our daughter for a moment before he meets my eyes. I'm not sure what kind of emotion is in there, but there's something that makes my insides stir.

"I know, baby," I answer finally, smiling at her. She continues eating and I tuck my chair in closer. "This looks great, Harry. You didn't have to do all this."

He shrugs. "It's not a big deal. Besides, this one woke me up at seven so I've had some time to kill while she told me about her new doll that your mother brought for her."

"Yeah, she really likes that one."

Surprising turn of events: my mother adores Harry. Every time she's hear I have to beg her not to ask why we're not together again. I still don't speak to my father much since everything that happened, but my mother has been nothing but supportive since I told her I was pregnant. As soon as things got bad that's when we had some support. How convenient.

"She's coming tomorrow," I remember suddenly.

"Who?" Harry asks, piling food on his plate.

"My mother. She's coming to see the store. Only for like two days, but still."

"Toast!" Sophie tells. Harry smiles at her and stands to get several items for her. He cuts half the piece of french toast and cuts it into small pieces, then replenishes her fruit bowl. He looks at me next.

"You can eat," he reminds me.

"Right." I take two right away and pour syrup on them. Harry sits back down and Sophie stabs at her plate. She's feeding herself...how did that happen so fast?

"Speaking of mothers," Harry says quietly. I stop chewing for a moment and look up at him. He's also paused. I know where this is going. "I know you don't really want to, but it's just one afternoon. She just wants to spend time with all of us together, that's all. You don't have to be alone with her."

"Harry, I don't know. It's a weird situation. Don't you think it would be weird?"

"No," he shrugs. "I don't see why it has to be a big deal. You're the mother of her granddaughter, of course she wants to see you. You know she loves you."

I look at Sophie, innocently stuffing her face and getting more on around her mouth than in it. She should get to spend time with both of us. I can do that, even though being around Anne is hard for me.

"Okay," I agree, pushing her hair away from the sticky mess on her cheeks. Harry is grinning widely when I look back at him and I can't ignore the bubbly happiness that forms in my stomach. "I'll go. We can all go to the park or something."

"Really?" he asks, his smile deepening.

"Yes," I laugh.

"Thank you, that really means a lot to me."

I nod and look down at my plate, a little embarrassed from the affection in his eyes. We eat in silence for a few minutes before I finally break it.

"I was thinking maybe we could do some shopping today," I suggest. "Her clothes are all getting too small again."

"Soph!" Harry exclaims, dramatically acting annoyed. She looks up at him with wide eyes. "You grew again?"

"I don't know," she says innocently. She looks at me with big round eyes and I keep my expression neutral to play along with Harry's game. "Mummy?"

"Yes?"

"Me grow?"

I nod. "So much."

"Soph," Harry whines again, setting his fork down. He shakes his head and she looks at him again. "Why do you keep doing that! You're going to be taller than me soon."

She can sense the humour in her father's voice now and she smiles. "No, Daddy."

"I'm telling you," he continues. "You grow like a weed, angel."

"Daddy," she giggles. He smiles and laughs breathily.

"Okay, not like a weed. Like a flower. Is that better?"

She nods quickly and he smiles adoringly at her. When Harry looks over at me there must be a weird look on my face because his smile fades slightly into a lighter one.

"What?" he asks, sipping his coffee.

"Nothing." Our gazes hold for a few more minutes before I finally look down at my plate. Our relationship is so hard to keep up iwth. Sometimes we can't go longer than an hour without arguing and other times it's like we never broke up in the first place. And when he acts so adorably with Sophie I can feel my heart flutter.

"Do today?" Sophie asks. The mess of mushed up food in front of her is completely disgusting and now she's playing with it.

"I don't know, Soph. What do you want to do today?" I ask.

"Bears?" she squeaks.

"No, baby, we saw the bears yesterday," I remind her.

"Again!"

"Soph, what about shopping? Mum wants to get you new clothes, wont that be fun?" Harry asks, eating still more food. He is bottomless, I swear.

"No! I want bears," she whines, slamming her fork on the table. Each time she flicks food around.

"Stop it," I scold, putting my hand on hers. "We just went to the zoo, we aren't going again."

"But I want to," she whines louder, sticking her bottom lip out. "Bears!"

She starts slamming her fork again and smashing her other hand into her food. Terrible two's is what people always tell me when I say I have a two year old. She doesn't throw tantrums often, but when she does it makes me so angry. I don't have the patience to deal with this like Harry does.

"Sophie, enough!" I exclaim, standing and putting both my hands on hers. I take the fork away and place it far enough away that she can't get it. She starts crying, extremely fake crying, while I try to wipe off her hands and get all the food away from her reach.

"Daddy," she cries loudly. It takes everything in me not to roll my eyes at her. "Daddy help!"

"Sophie, that's enough," he says calmly. "Listen to mummy."

"Bears!" she wails at the top of her lungs.

"Sophie," Harry says again, firmer this time, "We aren't going to the zoo because we went yesterday. Stop whining or you're going to stand in the corner."

Her eyes go wide and she clamps her mouth shut, her cries instantly stopping. It's so easy to tell when she's faking it and honestly it annoys the hell out of me. Now her tears look real, though, since she's been threatened with standing in the corner. Harry told me he started doing it with her a few months ago; when he was a boy his mother would punish him with it and he said it was the worst thing ever. It definitely works.

"Okay," Harry continues. I wipe her hands clean and move onto her face as Harry stands and comes around the table. "Can you apologize to mum?"

"Sowy mummy," she whimpers, her big green eyes looking up at me through glossiness. She's so cute.

"It's okay princess," I coo. She looks back at Harry and he smiles as he leans down beside her chair.

"Okay, mum and I want to spend the day with all of us, but we aren't going to the zoo again and I need you to listen to us alright?"

"Okay," she says shakily. Harry takes the cloth from the table and finishes wiping off her face. She holds her arms up to him and he smiles as he unbuckles her from the seat to lift her up. "I sorry Daddy." She links her arms around his neck and lays her head on his shoulder and he smiles at me while he places his large hand on her back.

"She should have a bath," I suggest. "She didn't get one last night and she was supposed to."

"Alright I'll do it," he says. "Don't clean up, okay? I'll do it later."

"I've got it, Harry."

He sighs and shakes his head as he walks out. He doesn't argue with me much about this kind of stuff anymore. I'm not sure if it's a good thing or not.

"Dis one!" Sophie says, tugging a shirt off a hanger. She runs towards me and holds it as high as she can. Harry and I both laugh a little at her excitement.

"Why do you like this one?" I ask, taking it from her.

"Is blue," she says happily. Harry bends down next to her with a smile.

"It's purple, love," Harry says. She shrugs. "Why don't you pick out something else?" He holds up his hand and she high-fives it before running off to look for more clothes.

"She loves shopping," he laughs as he stands up straight. "I wonder where she got that from." He gives me a teasing smile and I laugh a little.

"Do you need anything?" I ask, following after her.

"Not really."

"Harry, Every time I see you lately you're wearing those same jeans."

"I like them!" he defends. I laugh as he looks down at them. "I think they look good."

"I never said they look bad," I mutter quietly. Skinny jeans and Harry Styles are always a good combination. "The point is you should have more than one pair of jeans."

"I do," he says simply. I look over and he smiles adorably. "I have two."

I roll my eyes as he laughs. "Alright, we won't shop for you then."

"Do you need anything?" I look at him with raised eyebrows and he laughs again. "Right. Dumb question."

"You're really okay with doing this every week?" I ask while Harry, Sophie and I play with her barbies on the floor. He smiles and nods. "But it's supposed to be your time with her."

"I am with her," he says. "I like spending time with you." His eyes go wide and he quickly corrects himself. "With all of us, I mean."

"It's nice," I agree. "I just feel bad that you mis out on another night with her at your place."

"It's not a big deal, Savannah. I don't need her all to myself. As long as I'm still getting time with her, I don't care if we share it. That's how it's supposed to be anyway."

I stare at him as Sophie tells him in an annoyed voice that her barbie is waiting for her lunch. Harry gets back into character and starts playing with her again while I simply stare at him. He makes this so easy for us, so much easier than it should be. Our family dynamic is amazing, but adding the question of us in there just complicates everything. I would feel terrible if we tried again and Sophie ended up heartbroken as well.

Do I even want to try again? What Harry and I had was amazing, but I can't go through losing him twice. My heart wouldn't be able to handle that. It's not as easy as I'd like it to be and the more time passes the more I feel like we can never go back to where we were. It's such a hard spot to be in and now that we have another person to factor in it's ten times harder.

"Mummy, she sit here," Sophie says, pointing to the small doll couch. Harry look up at me and my cheeks flush slightly as I get back into the mindset of Barbies.
