One Way or Another

thirty-nine.

"It's nights like there when I love my mother," Gemma says. She lifts her wine glass in the centre of the table. "Cheers!"

Everyone clinks their glasses together and conversation ensures. Anne offered to watch the two kids so that the six of us could have a nice dinner together. Gemma and Harry need time to catch up and it's been months since I've spent time with Kylie or Mason. Because of my stupid hormones I started crying. Everyone laughed at me.

"We need to go to Kleinfeld's," Kylie says to me. "Have to. I've been watching Say Yes to the Dress for forever!"

"That would be so fun!" I exclaim. "Make an appointment and you can come and stay with us."

"We can have a girls' weekend."

"Yes, we have to. It's been way too long."

The good news is that by the time they get married next fall I'll be long past having the baby. That means plenty of time to lose the extra weight and look perfect in the designer dress, no doubt, that Kylie will make me wear. The other day she asked me to be her maid of honour, and surprisingly enough I'm the only one in her wedding party. They're just doing a maid of honour and best man and that's all. Troy and Mase are still really close, so Troy is the last person on the wedding party. I've only seen him a few times since graduation; when someone tries to ruin your life you kind of lose touch.

"How's your food?" Harry sets his arm over the back of my chair, his fingers tracing the skin on my arm.

"It's amazing. What did you get?"

"Fish," he says. I frown and he laughs. "I know, I know. I'm not supposed to get fish because you can't steal it."

"That's why you got it, isn't it."

"It may have been in the back of my mind."

My smile is wide as he kisses my cheek, turning back towards the others in conversation. There is only one more day left in our amazing vacation and then we have to go home to cold New York City. I wish I could stay here forever; I'll probably end up crying when we have to leave, damn hormones.

This was the only night we were actually able to try a specialty restaurant because of the two exhausted toddlers that are with us. Tonight is definitely a blessing. Quiet time is a rare occurrence and it's amazing how much you take it for granted until you have children.

"Can I just say," Mason begins, addressing everyone, "That I can't believe you two are still together. Well...back together, I guess."

"Thanks so much," I tell him sarcastically.

"You know what I mean. When I found out about you two in high school I wanted to kill Harry and lock Savannah in my closet. Now you're both so happy and I never would have guess it would turn into something real."

"It was always real," Harry says. "It's just that no one believed us."

"Yeah, well, I'm glad it worked out. I'm excited to have another niece or nephew."

"You two make the cutest babies," Kyle adds. I choke on my water and Harry laughs a little. "What? Just saying."

"I guess..thanks?" I shrug and put my hand on Harry's leg. "We'll take the as a compliment."

By the time dinner is over everyone is trashed but Harry. And me, of course. He's been acting weird today....weirdly affectionate, which is saying something because Harry is usually a really affectionate person. He keeps staring at me. Like a lot. And every time I catch him he just smiles and looks away without any shame. I love that he's paying attention to me, but it's weird. He always does, but this...there's something different about it today. I can't quite put my finger on it.

As we walk back to the villa Harry holds my hand, Gemma on the other side of me talking about their new house and how beautiful it is. Anne gets her own suite in this house instead of having to be alone; apparently they'll rent it out if she leaves. I've been told discretely that her new relationship is much more serious that Harry thinks. Wedding bells may even be in the near future.

"Take a walk with me," Harry says against my ear as we step up to the gate.

"What about Sophie?"

"She'll be asleep. Mum can watch her for a while longer."

"We'll check on her," Brad tells me as he walks past with Gemma. "You guys go ahead."

Harry tugs me away from the villa, tossing our shoes over first so we can walk in the sand. The beach is almost completely dark, especially near the water, with only the lights from the beachside villas to illuminate the path we're walking. The gentle sound of the waves crashing over the sand, Harry's warm hand around mine, the quiet over the normally buzzing beach. It's perfect.

"What are you thinking about?" Harry asks. A sigh passes my lips.

"I'm happy. The best kind of happy."

"Yeah?" His hand leaves mine to wrap his arm around my shoulders. "That's all I want."

"I want you to be this happy." My arms wrap around his torso as I peer up at him. "Are you?"

A small smile pulls at his lips. "Remember when I asked you to move in with me? The first time, back in San Francisco."

"My Dad pissed me off and I left," I recall. "You saved me."

"No. You saved me. I love my Mum and Gemma, but until I met you I hated my life. All there was for me was pain and all this anger and frustration with the way my life turned out. I don't think anyone could understand how much I needed a fresh start." He stops and keeps his arm around me, the other raising to lightly touch my cheek. "You were my fresh start."

My heart is pounding and Harry leaves a tender, chaste kiss on my lips. I love it when he talks like this. I get this tingly feeling in my toes and a flutter in my chest that I can't explain.

"There was so much missing from my life," he continues. "I wasn't happy. I wasn't sad. I was just angry and after that I felt nothing. When you walked into my classroom that day five years ago it was like fresh air in my lungs. And it made me so angry at first because how is that fair? The first person to make me feel something and you were off limits." Harry shakes his head and I let out a small laugh.

"When everything finally started happening between us I knew it was a horrible idea but it was the first good thing that'd happened to me in so long and I couldn't bring myself to let you go. And I'm so glad that I didn't. Because now I have you and we have Sophie and I can't imagine what my life would be like if it wasn't for you. I don't think you understand how much I really love you."

"I love you too," I promise, raising my arms around his neck.

He kisses me again and I hold onto his shirt to keep him close. These dam button up shirts are my weakness; of course Harry has to leave the top three or four unbuttoned.

"Come on." Harry slowly links his fingers with mine again and starts pulling me further down the beach.

"Where are we going?"

"You'll see."

My eyes scan the beach ahead of us, not having to look long for an indication. Something glows up ahead, softly enough that I can't make it out until we're closer. A small cabana with white curtains that sway softly with the breeze comes into view after a few minutes. The soft light comes from dozens of candles lit around the small space. In the very centre is a large lounging bed and as we get closer I recognize the features from previous walks along the beach. These are reserved for rich couples that are too privileged to be with the rest of the guests.

"Harry, what is this?" I ask quietly, allowing him to pull me closer. He smiles at me and steps up onto the wooden platform.

"Ginger-ale?" He holds out a champagne flute. How adorable.

"What are you up to?" He takes a sip of his drink, mischievously happy glint in his eyes. The light from the candles makes the green of his eyes glow and he looks simply beautiful with his tattoos and sun-kissed skin on full display. Like a modern day greek god in his white t-shirt button down shirt and tan coloured slacks.

Harry takes my hand and sits on the edge of the bed, pulling me down to join him. Hs own glass is set on the table and suddenly my palms begin to feel sticky. This feels serious for some reason and it's making me nervous.

"When I think about the next two, five, ten...even thirty years, you're all I see." Harry reaches up to push a windblown strand of hair behind my ear.

"If I didn't see you in my future we wouldn't be here," I tell him quietly, setting my glass down. "You're my forever."

"Forever," he repeats in a whisper. A peaceful expression falls over his face and he takes my other hand in his as well. "Forever still won't be long enough."

I understand that statement so well; if Harry and I live to be one hundred and fifty I would still want more time. Loving someone this much shouldn't be humanly possible. But then again, Harry and I seem to break every rule.

"What are you doing?" I ask quietly, my heart hammering against my chest as he slowly slides off his seat. My left hand remains tightly held in his as he kneels in front of me. On one knee. Just one. For a minute I almost forget to breathe and my eyes stay glued to his as he slides his hand into his pocket.

"You mean the entire world to me," Harry says. His eyes pierce mine and even if I wanted to look away I wouldn't be able to. "You'll always be the best thing that ever happened to me, Savannah. If there was a way to describe how much I love you I would try, but there aren't any words. No one could ever express how far and wide and deep my love is for you. I want to spend the rest of our lives laughing and smiling together, crying together, fighting together, making each other so angry the way we always do." He smiles when a breathy laugh leaves my lips. "No matter what happens, I will always be here for you. I want to be the one to make you smile. I want to be the one that sees you first every morning and last every night. I want to hold you when you're sad and laugh with you when you're happy. I want to have a family with you. I want to be there beside you as our children grow up. I want to be the one person you know you can always, always count on. I want to be your forever. And I want you to be mine."

Tears fall slowly down my cheeks and he pauses, closing his eyes as a small tear drops from the corner of one. My thumb wipes it away and he smiles, his eyes matched to mine again. Harry holds up a ring in his hand but I don't care about that. My eyes remain on his and he takes a deep breath.

"Savannah Dorothy Williams." He laughs when I shake my head; he knows I hate my middle name but it's so annoyingly cute that he's using it anyways.

"Will you marry me?"

"My hands rest of either side of his face, leaning down to press my lips against his. It doesn't last long, though, because I'm crying and laughing and I know he wants me to answer him.

"Yes." I kiss him once more and sit back a little. "Yes, I will."

Harry's whole face brightens and his smile is wider than I've ever seen. He takes my hand and slowly slides the ring into place, taking a moment to stare at it there. He then lifts my hand, kissing each knuckle and placing my palm against his cheek again.

"I love you." I take hold of the front of his shirt as I tell him, pulling him up and making my way backwards on the bed. "So much."

Harry collapses on the bed next to me and pulls me to lay against his side. The tips of our noses touch ever so slightly as we lay there just staring at each other with ridiculous smiles on our faces. Our fingers lace together over his chest and Harry occasionally runs his over the newly placed diamond. It's the most surreal feeling in the world. He's mine. I'm his. Forever.

It's most amazing feeling in the entire world.
