One Way or Another

twenty-nine.

"Mummy, no more," Sophie whines as I pull her up the stairs.

"Almost there, I promise," I tell her again. We get to the fourth floor of Harry's building and step into the hallway. "You know where we are?"

"Daddy," she says simply.

"Yeah. Hopefully he's here," I mutter, pulling her with me down the hall. The last time we heard from Harry was yesterday; we were supposed to have dinner with all of us tonight to celebrate or something. The message he left was kind of cryptic; he said he would be busy last night but that he wanted to have dinner with the three of us tonight to celebrate. Celebrate what, he didn't say, but now that he's apparently dropped off the face of the planet I'm starting to get nervous.

When we get to Harry's apartment Sophie knocks on the door at the same time as me, a faint smile curving on my lips as I look down at her. This pregnancy scares the shit out of me, but having another child like Sophie makes me happier than I thought I could be. She's been so amazing, the best thing that ever happened to me. Another one could only be equally as amazing.

"Harry?" I call, pounding on the door again. I bite my lip nervously, waiting a few minutes before assuming he's not there. My eyes wander down the hall and an idea comes to me, the last thing I want to do. "Come on, Soph."

She holds her hands up and I finally give in and carry her. When I get to the next door down I take a breath and knock on it. A minute later Sam opens the door and smirks at me, folding her arms across her minimally covered chest.

"Savannah," she says icily. "What a surprise."

"Have you seen Harry?" I ask irritatedly. "Has he been home today?"

"Hmm." She looks up in thought, taking an annoyingly long time to think about it. "I'm not sure."

"Sam, it's important," I snap.

"You've always been so pleasant," she says sarcastically.

"Right back at you."

She rolls her eyes. "I haven't seen him. I saw him leave yesterday but since then I haven't noticed him come back."

"Are you sure?"

"I'm not on drugs, I can remember the last twenty four hours," she snaps.

"Calm the f-" I look at Sophie and take a deep breath. "Relax. I'm worried about him, I didn't mean to be rude."

"What do you mean? Where is he?"

"If I knew that I wouldn't be here. I haven't heard from him since yesterday and his phone is going straight to voicemail," I explain, my heart rate increasing with the speed of my words. The more I think about this the more freaked out I'm getting.

"Shit. Umm...I really haven't seen him," she says, now seeming a little sympathetic. "If he comes back I'll make sure he calls you."

"Can I give you my number?" I ask. This is desperation at its finest. "If he comes back you can text me or if you see him..."

"Yeah. Yeah, I guess that'd be fine. Hold on." She disappears into her apartment for a minute and comes back with her phone, handing it to me to put my number in. "I hope he's okay."

"Me too," I admit quietly. I hand her the phone and we both stand there awkwardly; neither of us are used to actually being polite. "Thanks, Sam."

"Yeah. Sure. Good luck."

"Thanks."

She nods and steps back into her place, shutting the door as I start walking away with Sophie. Being pregnant and not being about to find the guy that's the father of both your children...not exactly a comforting time. It's not that I miss him- which I do, don't get me wrong- it's that I have no idea if he's okay. It's not very often that I can't get a hold of Harry. Usually it's that I'm avoiding him, but he still calls all the time so I know he's still...existing. Right now it's like he's just disappeared.

I told my mother yesterday that I'm pregnant, so she has now insisted that I have one of her drivers take me everywhere. Dennis is waiting for us outside the building, pulling open the door for both of us to climb in.

"Was he there?" he asks. I've known Dennis ever since I moved to the city; whenever I use my mother's car service I ask for him.

"No." Sophie gets into the car and begins trying to do up the buckles. "We've been everywhere. He didn't show up for work today, he's not at his place, none of the usual places."

"Is there someone he could be staying with? A friend or relative you haven't tried?"

"No, I...oh, wait!" I suddenly remember, pulling out my phone. "Niall, I haven't tried Niall!"

"I'll start driving, you give him a call."

I nod, the phone already to my ear as I climb into the back seat next to Sophie. When she's all buckled in Niall answers the phone, chipper as ever. His concern is noted when I explain the situation.

"Shit, no. I haven't seen him, Sav. He hasn't called or anything."

"I don't think his phone is on, it's been going straight to voicemail," I explain, leaning my head back. There's got to be something I'm missing here.

"Where are you? I'll help you look."

"No, you don't have to do that, Niall."

"I want to. Have you gone to the gym?"

"Yeah, he never showed up today. I'm really starting to freak out here," I admit quietly. "Where could he be?"

"I'm sure he's fine."

"That's not convincing. People don't just disappear."

"Sav, calm down. Where are you?"

"Driving around the city."

"Okay," he says, thinking for a moment. "Is Sophie with you?"

"Yeah. I don't think she knows what's going on yet, but...maybe I should go home with her."

"You're clearly stressed, so you're only going to freak her out. Why don't I come over there and either I can watch her for you or I can go out looking."

"Are you sure? You really don't have to, that's not why I called," I insist. I didn't intend to disrupt his day.

"I want to help. I'll be over there in twenty minutes."

"Okay. Thanks, Niall."

Dennis starts heading back towards my building and I notice that Sophie's practically falling asleep. She doesn't nap that much anymore, but she definitely will be needing one today. Going around New York when you're two is probably exhausting, and it definitely shows. She hasn't said anything so far about the new baby, hasn't asked any questions. It seems like she thinks it's pretty inconsequential, but when I start getting huge I'm sure the questions will start. She's like her father, though; she just goes with it.

Niall is waiting outside my door when we get there, and he takes my keys for me so I can support a sleeping Sophie. I haven't spent a ton of time with Niall, but he sometimes has dinner with Harry and I or we'll go to his bar. Plus, he watches Sophie for us quite a bit so he's becoming like part of our family.

"When was the last time you saw him?" he asks, sitting on my couch.

"Yesterday morning. He slept over and then he went to work. He left a message on my phone a few hours later telling me he'd be busy the rest of the day but he wanted to have dinner with us tonight, but he never called after that and I haven't been able to get a hold of him. And no one has seen him."

"This is so weird," he says, scratching his head. "Not like Harry at all."

"Am I over reacting? It hasn't even been a full day since I hear from him. It's just so weird because usually we're in almost constant communication, and if he was too busy to come over he would call or text or something." The tears are coming. Sooner or later they will start falling.

"Savannah, don't worry. We'll find him," he says calmly. "Try to relax."

"Did he tell you?" I ask, confused as to why he's so concerned with me being calm.

"Tell me what?"

"That I'm...you know," I prompt. His expression only reads confusion. "I'm...I'm pregnant."

Niall's eyes almost pop out of his head. "What! Shit, that's amazing! Congr-" He pauses and realizes why I'm so freaked. "Oh."

"Yeah. Worst timing ever. Maybe that's why I'm so worked up. You know...hormones and stuff."

He laughs. "Maybe, but I wouldn't know."

"Niall, it's getting dark and I'm starting to freak the fuck out," I say into the phone, tugging at my hair and pacing while leaving him the fourth message in an hour. "Please call me back."

As if on cue the door opens. For a moment the expectation that it's Harry coming back to me is all that fills my mind, a fleeting smile on my face. Niall's solemn expression shatters ever hope I had when he comes in alone.

"Nothing," he says quietly. "I looked everywhere."

"I think...maybe I should call the police," I suggest, biting at my fingernail that's already down to the skin."

"They're not going to listen, not yet. All you know is that you haven't talked to him and he didn't go to work."

"I can't just do nothing!"

"Okay, okay." He walks over and sets his hands on my shoulders. "Breathe, Savannah. I'm not kidding, you need to try to relax."

"I can't," I whimper. "I'm so scared, Niall. What if he's hurt or something bad happened to him?"

"Harry is a big boy. He knows how to take care of himself."

"He was fighting, Niall!" I shout suddenly. "He was fighting illegally and he was trying to get out but what if they figured it out? What if someone....what if someone hurt him?" Angry tears flow down my cheeks, trying to stop them but failing miserably. "I can't lose him...if something happens to him I can't...I don't what..."

"Shh." Niall hugs me and I cry against his chest for a while until I start to calm down. The thought of someone hurting Harry makes me feel physically sick. He protects us all the time, but I would die before I let someone hurt him. He needs to be okay. He just has to be.

"I need him to come home," I whimper.

"I know," Niall says. "He will."

"What if-"

"Don't go there," he says firmly. "Just don't think about that. He's going to come back, I know he's fine."

"Niall...I know we're not exactly close but I just..." I look up at him and he waits for me to continue. "Would you mind staying here tonight? If I have to go or he calls or I need someone to stay with Soph..."

"Of course," he says immediately.

"Okay. Thank you. For everything."

"Any time. You should try to sleep, okay? I'll stay up for a bit and let you know if he calls."

"Alright." He gives me a half-smile as I make my way to my bedroom. Nothing about this situation is sitting well with me and it's making my whole body feel on edge. The only option is Harry coming home to me. He just has to.

"Sav. Savannah, wake up."

"Harry?" I croak, sitting up and reaching for my lamp. "Oh. Niall. What's up?"

"Here," he says, holding a phone out to me. "It's for you."

"Is...is it him?" He shakes his head and the look on his face makes my stomach drop. Slowly but surely I take the phone from his hand, bringing it up to my ear. "Hello?"

"Savannah Williams?"

"Yes, this is her," I say quietly.

"We're going to need you to come down here."
