One Way or Another

eight.

Harry's POV

"I'm just pissed." I take another sip of my beer and Niall laughs and pours another for someone else sitting down the bar from me.

"Yeah, I can tell," he says. "Are you going to tell me why?"

"I know people usually tell all their problems to the local barkeep, but that isn't going to happen right now." I smile so he knows I'm kidding, but really it's not happening. I'm pissed that my mother is dating some guy, I'm pissed that she didn't tell me about it, and I'm pissed that Savannah tried to make it seem like it wasn't a big deal. It's a huge fucking deal. How do I know he isn't exactly like my father? I'm not in a position to protect her anymore.

"You want another?"

"Hold on." I take out my phone when it vibrates with yet another call from Savannah. I probably should have responded to her text, but I didn't want to talk to her. She knows how to calm me down and I just wanted to be pissed for a bit.

"When do I get to meet the mother of little blondie?" Niall asks, wiping dry a glass.

"You don't." I smile and lay some money on the bar. "Maybe eventually, but you're going to think she's hot and I know you'll try to hit on her. Frankly, I don't feel like watching that."

He laughs loudly. "Yeah mate, I'm going to try to get in with your wife."

"She's not my wife, Niall."

"She will be eventually."

I stare at him for a moment, wondering if he's right. The though gives me goosebumps. When Niall realizes that I'm daydreaming he laughs again.

"Fuck off," I mutter, walking out of his bar.

I walk home to get the beer out of my system before I get back. I already feel bad about the way I spoke to Sophie earlier, I'm not going to show up tipsy. Savannah is probably upset about that, too. Shit.

When I get to the fanciest fucking building in New York my palms get sweaty with nerves. Savannah holds way more power over me than she even realizes. It took everything in me not to lister to her earlier and try to speak reasonably with my mother.

As soon as the doors open I hear laughter. It's almost eleven by now, I'm surprised either of them are still awake. Savannah and my mother are both sitting on the couch near the window, both of them doubled over and laughing. When I walk in my mum sees me first and she sets her empty wine glass on the table. There's two empty bottles there already so I have a feeling this is going to be interesting.

"Harry!" She throws her arms around me and I look over her shoulder at Savannah. She smiles widely at me and downs the rest of her glass, not breaking eye contact with me. For some reason it makes my stomach flip.

"It's alright," I assure her quietly. "I'm not upset."

"I'm sorry, I didn't want to-"

"Mum, it's fine, I over reacted." She sniffles and pulls away to wipe her eyes. "Why don't you get some sleep, okay? We can talk about it tomorrow."

She nods and stumbles slightly as she makes her way to her room. Savannah refills her glass as I walk towards the couch she's sitting on.

"Just go ahead and ruin my fun," she says as I sit down.

"My mother is your new drinking buddy?"

She shrugs. "She was down about something happy and I wanted her to be excited about her new boyfriend. You," she pokes my chest, "Ruined her mood."

I take her finger in my hand and she laughs. "Are you drunk, Savannah?" I smile as I ask, though it should upset me since she was watching Sophie.

"No," she protests.

"Yes," I argue, laughing.

"Okay, maybe a little," she says finally, smiling over her wine glass. "Where did you run off to?"

"Not important. It was dumb, I'm sorry."

"You upset your daughter," she says. "She thought you were angry with her."

My heart pinches at her words. The last thing I wanted to do was upset Sophie.

"I didn't mean to," I excuse weakly. "And she's our daughter, by the way."

"She's more yours than mine," Savannah says. "She looks exactly like you. Also, your mum is really fun to drink with."

"This is weird," I laugh. "For future reference, we shouldn't be drinking while taking care of our child. It's probably irresponsible."

"Yeah well, I didn't get a lot of time to be irresponsible, so I'm going to have some fun sometimes. Do you want a glass?"

She gets up before I can answer and gets me one anyway. Savannah was a mother so young that she didn't get a lot of time to be rebellious and do the college thing. Apparently she's trying to make up for it, and I'm happy to be her drinking partner. She fills up my glass and downs half of hers.

"You're going to be sick later," I tell her, drinking half of mine as well.

"Don't worry about me. So tell me where you went?"

"It's a secret."

She giggles and turns towards me, her legs pulled onto the couch and a little over mine. My heart rate speeds up and she leans against the back of the couch, her face a little too close to mine.

"I like secrets," she says quietly.

"I'm not telling this one."

"You're no fun."

"I'm loads of fun," I argue dramatically. I like it when we can have fun like this. I know it's going to make me sad later, but it's worth it right now with the light in her eyes.

"Do you ever think about us?" she asks suddenly. My eyes go wide and I almost spit out the wine I was in the middle of swallowing.

"What?" I choke out.

"You and me," she continues. "Do you ever wonder what would have happened if we stayed together?"

My heart starts hammering in my chest, confused at why she looks so calm. We haven't talked about this in two years, why is she bringing it up now? When I don't respond she laughs a little, lightly placing her fingertips on my knee.

"Are you nervous?" she asks quietly, slowly trailing them up my leg. I swallow and try to force words out of my dry mouth but they don't come. She leans in a little closer to me. "I think about it."

"You do?" I finally manage to say. She nods and I catch her eyes flicker down to my lips. What the hell is happening right now?

"Of course," she purrs. "I made a mistake when I left."

I'm not nearly as drunk as she is so I have no idea what to say. Part of me is saying this is a mistake that we'll both regret in the morning, telling me to stop her now before this goes to far. Another part is saying enjoy it, take advantage of her honesty. Have this conversation even if she won't remember it tomorrow.

"Do you think about me Harry?" she continues. Her hand trails lightly up and down my leg and I'm extremely aware of it.

"Of course," I breathe. "Of course I think about you."

"Like you used to?" she asks very quietly. After a moment I nod once and she releases a breath. "Good."

"Good?"

She nods. "I don't want to be the only one that can't move on."

Can't move on? What is she....what is going on right now? I just stare at her, unable to process the situation since it was so unexpected. She stares right back at me, but I don't think she feels as unsure as I do. I blame the alcohol.

"Savannah...." She leans in closer to me and I can feel her breath against my lips. "What are you-"

She cuts me off with a kiss. Her lips are barely against mine at first, softly testing the waters to gage my reaction. I can't help but kiss her back, the feeling is too familiar, and when she realizes she locks her arms around my neck. I feel like I should be stopping this, but I really don't want to. I haven't kissed her in two years and I'm desperate, more so than I realized.

She slowly raises herself onto her knees, setting one on the other side of my body so she's sitting on my lap. I moan against her mouth when her fingers tangle gently into my hair and as soon as I do she presses her body harder against mine. I can't think, can't breathe, can't function. All I can think about is how amazing it feels to have her lips against mine right now.

My hands slide up and down her sides, wrapping around her back and holding her against me. It feels like it's been ages since we've kissed, but at the same time it's like nothing has changed. I had hoped that she wouldn't be drunk for this moment, but it's happening all the same.

"Daddy?"

Savannah gasps and spins off of me, her body placed on the couch next to me again. Sophie is standing near her door, tiredly rubbing her eyes to rid them of sleep, I'm sure. My lips are probably a little swollen and my cheeks are definitely red, and the zipper of my jeans proves to be a little uncomfortable right now from my excitement, but Sophie is only two and she doesn't know what was just happening.

"Hi angel," I finally respond. I run my hands through my hair and try to catch my breath. "What are you doing up?"

"Me hear you," she says. She pads over to me and I lift her onto my lap. She sticks her thumb in her mouth and looks over at Savannah. While my eyes slowly lift to hers as well I mentally prepare myself for regret and shock. Instead, she looks happy.

"You really should be in bed," Savannah says, leaning forward to kiss our daughter on the forehead. She turns to me at the same time, our faces again unnaturally close. "I probably should, too."

"Okay," I breathe. I look down at her lips again and she sighs, pressing a light kiss to my cheek before getting up from the couch.

"Goodnight Soph," she says. She kisses Sophie on the forehead and looks at me one more time before turning and heading for her bedroom.

"Let's get you to bed." I watch Savannah disappear into her room as I hold Sophie against my chest, her cheek against my shoulder. I literally have no idea what just happened and I have no idea how I feel about it.

Tomorrow should be interesting.
