Chapter Three: Dead Carnival Party

Sam’s POV:

I remember the first time that Harry and I started officially conversing with each other at one of Louis’s parties.

Louis was known for throwing the most amazing parties that anyone could ever think of.
Junior year had just ended, and he already had a party sketched up. He kept telling me he wanted to make this the best summer for the both of us, before I ditched him for some Ivy League school.

“So where is this place?” I skeptically investigated the black invitation:

Sam Whitestock:

10:00pm
104 NE Private Street 10876
Masks are a must.

“This looks like a ransom note; I don’t think anyone is going to show.”

Louis gave me a look, as we sped through the scorching heat of the summer, sun setting off its pinks and purples as the night crept up on us, “Has anyone ever been disappointed with my parties?”

“No, at least no one will tell you to your face that it wasn’t.”

“No ones been disappointed.” He glared ahead as we hit a pothole in the road, his old scratchy seats stinging my legs.

“Sorry.” I muttered, shimming my yellow dress down, so I wouldn’t arrive with a gigantic rash on my thighs.

We drove in silence, as the cool breeze finally answered my prayers. Wind whipping through my long hair as I started to see something upon the horizon.

I squinted against the remaining sunshine, spotting something large reaching towards the sky, “What is that?”

“That is our party.”

I stared at him shocked, “What is it though?”

“You’ll see soon.”

I didn’t want to wait to find out, so I squinted harder to try and figure where the hell I was going.

It appeared to have spots encircling it, as smaller objects started popping up below it, recognition finally clicking, “Is that a Ferris wheel?”

Louis gave me a half smirk, the setting sun hitting him perfectly from behind, making his hair a shining gold, “Yep.”

“I didn’t know there was a fair going on.” Our small town always knew when there was anything remotely interesting going on.

“That’s because there isn’t.”

“What do you mean?” I was confused now.

“It is an abandoned carnival.”

“Abandoned?” I didn’t like the sound of that.

“Yep.” Was all he replied.

What the hell made it abandoned? I thought to myself nervously as we got closer to our destination.

Everything looked like it had crawled out of a horror movie. The Ferris wheel was dark and run down, moss eating away the once shiny silver bars, doors hung loose from their carriages. Below the Ferris wheel had overgrown grass, vines wrapping around anything it could latch on like a deadly snake. The snack and entertainment booths had collapsed on each other, creating a skeleton of what it once was.

“Louis, I really think people are going to turn around once they see this.” We stepped out of the truck, decaying wood and wilderness hit my nose.

He sighed out, “You have little faith.” He placed his hand out to me.

“What?”

“Do you trust me?”

I stared at his outstretched hand skeptically, “I do.” I placed mine in his.

He led me down a narrow path, weeds acting as our walls. Bugs of all kinds sang their chirps as the oncoming night engulfed us. Stars above popping out one by one as if joining in on the party below.

I noticed Louis had some huge machine thing in his other hand, as we finally came upon a clearing, a gorgeously run down carousal sat in the opening.

Louis dropped my hand, and walked to the other side of the carousal, leaving me alone in the eerily beautiful place, “Louis what are you doing?”

“Be patient!” he yelled out wherever he was.

I heard a loud roar, then complete silence, the sound scaring the critters away.
Low music started tinkling out, as the carousal lights flickered back and forth, it jumping forward as it slowly started to spin; the lights and music working completely now.

I watched in amazement, as it spun around with new life, Louis coming into view, riding a large dirty white horse on the carousal, “Join me Sam!” he beamed out to me.

“I-I can’t…” I watched him spin by.

“Why not?” he asked as he came around again.

“It’s moving!” I exclaimed, wondering why he didn’t understand that.

“Don’t let that hold you back! Jump Sam!”

I watched nervously as he spun around on the carousal, too afraid to jump.
“Trust me Sam; it isn’t going fast you won’t get hurt!”

I narrowed me eyes, focusing on the carousal, as I let myself leap. Fear and excitement coursed through me, as I landed loudly upon the carousal, my hands grabbed the nearest bar, leeching my body to it the adrenaline thumping fast.

Louis came around into view, walking towards me with a huge grin, “I told you, you could…”

“Wow! Did you see Sam just jump?” I spun around to see a glimpse of the curly locks that I had always admired from afar.

I heard a loud thunk a bit away, turning towards the sound; I could see a glimpse of Louis’s sour expression, as Harry came into view.

“That was pretty amazing.” He smiled sweetly to me.
"‘Thanks.” I blushed nervously.

“I didn’t think you had that stuff in you.”

“What stuff?” I was curious to find out what he thought of me, wondering why he thought of me at all.

“I didn’t think you would be into little stunts like that, thought you would be more calm.” He chuckled to himself.

“Well there’s more to me than you thought.” I startled even myself at being this daring.

“I would love to see everything then.” He smiled wickedly at me.

Louis coughed loudly getting both of our attention, “Lets get off this, so we can start setting the rest of the party up, you are a little early Harry.” He eyed him up and down.

I frowned at his weird behavior as Harry just replied back calmly, “I wanted to make sure I didn’t get lost to this amazing party. I can never miss one of yours man.” He thumped Louis’s back and hopped off with no worries at all, making his way back to his small group of friends.

Louis turned to me as we still stood on the moving carousal, “What was that about?”

“What was what about?” I watched him.

“That.” He pointed over at Harry.

“Nothing.” I shrugged at him, as we made our way back to the spot that Harry’s group was, I jumped off without even thinking. I turned around for a moment to see where Louis was, but he just stood on the carousal, eyes lowered at me.

Was he angry, or was he sad?

I didn’t know, and didn’t want to worry too much, nothing bad happened, so I turned my attention back to Harry who was standing in front of me now, smiling his beautiful smile.
“I like how you don’t scare like most girls.”

I smiled shyly back, knowing I was actually scared of it a while ago; I couldn’t help but hide the truth from him, an odd start to us officially meeting for the first time.
