In a Heartbeat

What About Mel?

Harry's POV

"Harry, we have some bad news," Liam said. This was usually the point where they told me one of them was leaving One Direction on February 31 or something like that.
"Who's leaving this time?" I asked dryly.
"The pianist," he answered, looking confused. "He fell backstage and we think his leg is broken. And our backup had to stay in London."
"What about Melody?" I asked.
"What about me?" Melody asked, walking up behind me.
"Yeah. What about Melody?" Liam asked, still confused. "She can't play the piano."
"Actually, I can," she said, looking between Liam and me. "Why?"
"You can? Good. How fast can you learn to play a new song?" Niall asked, walking up behind Liam, stuffing half of a rather large donut in his mouth.
"I just have to play it once. now would somebody please tell me why you're asking!" she shouted.
"Well, our pianist broke his leg and we need somebody to play for us, but we don't have a backup," Niall answered, giving up on half the donut and just biting into it.
"What are you asking?" Meldoy asked cautiously.
I cleared my throat. "We need you to be our pianist for the second part of the concert."

Melody's POV

"WHAT?!" I shouted.
"We wouldn't ask if we had another choice, Mel," Liam said quickly. Paul came up behind him, followed by Zayn.
"We have another prob-"
"Guitar guy just threw up. I forgot his name, but he's in the toilets now," Louis said, running up behind Harry. "Hi, Paul!"
"So what's your bad news?" I asked Paul.
"Well, that was it. Louis just told you. I'm afraid we're going to have to cancel the rest of the concert," Paul said.
"But we have Melody!" Harry said, throwing his hands up in the air.
"Who?"
"Me," I said, raising my hand awkwardly.
"Remember the music room in her house?" Harry asked the boys. They all nodded. "Mel is amazing!
"Not all at the same time!" I shouted. "Wait... I have an idea. Just give me a minute, okay?"
I pulled out my phone and sent a text to my friend Tristan.

Me: hey u busy 4 the next hour or so?
Tristan: no y?
Me: can u come 2 the stage door of the Fargodome?
Tristan: y r u @ the 1D concert?
Me: long story, no time. can u?
Tristan: i guess i could.
Me: yay! wear something nice. not like a tux or anything, just a good pair of jeans and a nice shirt. no tie.
Tristan: okay...?
Me: ok, so theres gonna b a guy who asks u wat ur name is. say ur full name, then the code word "tree frog"
Tristan: y tree frog?
Me: cuz nobody would think to say it. now hurry up! u need to b here in like less than 5 mins

"Okay, so I have a plan. Paul, I'm having a friend come to the stage door entrance where we came in. His name is Tristan Scott," I said, pulling up a picture of him on my phone. "This is what he looks like. You have to ask him what his name is, and he'll tell you, then say 'tree frog'. I told him he had to have a code phrase, but he doesn't. Don't tell him that, though," I said with a mischevious smile on my face.
Paul walked away as Katrina walked up behind me, stumbling a little.
"You blunderbuss!" I said, grinning at my use of the SAT word. I don't know where I learned it, but it was fun to say and it definitely described Katrina and me.
"I didn't think girls could do that much damage trying to get backstage. It's like trying to run through half-dried glue out there!" she said.
"Well, I'm glad I got here before you did, then!" I said, laughing. Then I got serious. "Okay, so their guitar guy just threw up and their pianist broke his leg."
"What? Don't they have backups or something for this kind of thing?" Katrina asked, shocked.
"Well, they usually do, but they had to stay in London for something," I said. "Tristan's coming and I'm crossing my fingers that he can learn the songs really fast because he needs to play piano for them."
"Tristan's coming here?" she shouted. Then she spoke quieter. "You've had a huge crush on Tristan for a long time! Aren't you nervous?!"
I shrugged. "No. I mean, he's my best guy friend, so why would I be? Plus, you've had your eye on Jamison for what, nine years now? Almost 10? You're not nervous around him!"
"Nine and a half," she said quietly. "But still!"
Katrina walked away, mesmerized by a chocolate fountain she had just spotted. I had half a mind to do the same, but Paul came back with Tristan in tow.
"Why'd you need me to get here so fast?" Tristan asked.
"Well hello to you, too. My day was fine, thanks for asking!" I replied sarcastically. "You play piano. How fast can you learn to play songs?"
"It doesn't take long. Why?"
"Well, their piano guy just broke his leg and their guitar guy just got sick. We need you to play piano for the last part of the concert," I said. "Please? My little sister's here and she's always wanted to go to a One Direction concert and this is probably her only chance. I'll do anything!"
"Anything?" he asked, raising his eyebrows.
"Not that. Like, I'll pay you in pizza or something. I'm a little low on cash right now 'cuz of these people," I said, pointing at the boys.
"Dude, you don't have to pay me. I'll do it," he said. I raised my eyebrows at him. "Now you're thinking like that."
"Well, when you hang out with Shorty, it becomes a habit," I said, using his old nickname.
Tristan glared at me.
"Sooo... is he going to play or not?" Harry asked, walking over.
"Yeah. He needs a bit of practice time first, though. He's never played a One Direction song before," I said, shoving Tristan over to Harry.
"But what about guitar?" Liam asked, stepping forward.
I smiled. "Just give me five minutes and I'll be ready."

Notes

I'm going to start using weirder words that are really hard to read. So I'm obfuscating! (For those of you who don't know, to obfuscate is to deliberately make something difficult to understand. It's an SAT word!) I'm watching One Direction video diaries <3. I haven't seen them yet, so I'm watching them all at once.

HEY. Your official-unofficial announcements sadden me. No promises or not, I really, really, really, really, really, really, REALLY hope you decide to eventually continue. I won't even be mad if you do a rewrite but dude, you gotta do something. I WILL DIE IF THIS STORY DOES NOT CONTINUE.

@fascinated

It didn't sound aggressive. I'd be pissed at me, too. I found my charger, but my phone refuses to copy and paste what I've written, which was what my original plan was to do after realizing that it wasn't written in my notebook. I haven't had time to type it all up yet, but I figure that since I have nothing else to do right now (other than watch "Supernatural" and sleep), I should probably update. I've been working on chapter ideas for the sequel, typing them on my phone as they come to me and such, thinking of ways to lead up to them. I'll admit, I suck at it. But I'm working on it! I have a secret partner in crime that's going to help with it. Hopefully.
So I'm gonna quit rambling now and actually go type the chapter.

ThAT WAS FOURTEEN DAYS AGO!!!!!!!!!! Where is your charger? I didn't mean for that to sound aggressive.

To be honest, I already have the name picked out (don't laugh at me if I already said that in the sequel announcement chapter), but that's really good. I might use that for another story I'm working on.
I'm really excited for the sequel because it's going to be kind of like a fresh start, and I have a lot of ideas that I'm super duper excited to use. There's definitely going to be a lot more drama in the sequel and I'm hoping that I might make you guys cry at least once. :)
Your tears bring me great joy.

I seriously cannot wait for the sequel :) And for a name, maybe Don't Believe All You See, but that may be a bit long. Hope you update again soon!!!
